-------------------------------------------------
Four years had passed since Devara had left Bhulok to begin his training under Lord Vishnu, and the barren island that had once appeared to him as nothing more than an empty stretch of rock had become the place where he had been forced to rebuild his understanding of combat from the ground up.
The first months had been brutal.
Vishnu had made him learn the Gada from its most basic movements, correcting his stance, his footwork, his grip and even the way he shifted his weight before every strike.
Whenever Devara relied purely on his physical strength, Vishnu punished the mistake immediately.
Whenever he allowed anger or impatience to influence his movements, Vishnu used Maya against him until Devara could no longer tell whether the opponent standing before him was real or an illusion.
Over the years, the lessons had become increasingly difficult, until Devara could no longer remember how many times he had fought an enemy who had never existed, defended against attacks that were only illusions and struck at Vishnu only to discover that he had been attacking empty air.
Now, four years later, the same barren island looked completely different because of what had taken place upon it.
The ground was covered with countless cracks and enormous impact marks created by their training, while several rocky formations that had once stood across the island had been reduced to shattered fragments.
There was no longer anything peaceful about the place.
Every part of it carried evidence of the countless battles that had taken place there.
At the center of that ruined landscape, Devara and Vishnu were locked in a fierce Gada battle.
The sound of the two divine weapons colliding echoed across the island.
BOOOOOOM!
Devara’s Gada crashed against Vishnu’s weapon, and the force of the impact sent a powerful shockwave across the ground.
Dust and small stones were thrown into the air as both warriors pushed against each other for several seconds before suddenly separating.
Devara spun his Gada through his hand and immediately rushed forward again.
Vishnu waited.
The moment Devara entered striking distance, Vishnu swung his Gada toward his side.
Devara immediately ducked.
The weapon passed above his head.
He planted one foot firmly into the ground and swung his own Gada upward.
Vishnu blocked it.
CLANG!
The impact forced Vishnu backward several steps.
Devara followed.
But just as he prepared to strike again, the battlefield suddenly changed.
The barren island disappeared.
Devara found himself standing inside his own palace.
He immediately recognized the throne room.
His wives were there.
Gandhari stood near the throne.
His children were playing nearby.
Everything looked completely normal.
Devara’s eyes narrowed.
"Maya."
The word had barely left his mouth when Gandhari suddenly turned toward him.
"Devara!"
Her voice sounded frightened.
He looked toward her.
"What happened?"
Before she could answer, the palace doors exploded inward.
An army of unknown creatures rushed into the hall.
Devara immediately reached for his weapon.
But then he stopped.
Something was wrong.
The shadows were moving in the wrong direction.
He looked at Gandhari again.
Her face changed.
For a fraction of a second, her features became completely unfamiliar.
Devara smiled.
"Nice try."
The entire palace shattered like glass.
The illusion disappeared.
Devara was standing on the island again.
Vishnu was already swinging his Gada toward him.
Devara barely managed to raise his own weapon.
BOOOOOOM!
The impact sent him sliding across the ground.
He dug his feet into the earth and stopped himself.
Vishnu smiled.
"You recognized that one faster."
Devara wiped a small amount of blood from the corner of his mouth.
"Your Maya is getting predictable."
Vishnu raised an eyebrow.
"Is it?"
Suddenly there were ten Vishnus surrounding Devara.
Then twenty. Then fifty.
Every single one held a Gada.
Devara slowly turned his head.
The Vishnus began moving simultaneously.
Some attacked from the front.
Others came from behind.
Several disappeared and reappeared from different directions.
Devara closed his eyes.
He did not look at them.
He listened.
The sound of footsteps.
The movement of air.
The pressure beneath his feet.
The faint shift in the atmosphere.
Then he opened his eyes and turned toward one particular Vishnu.
"Found you."
He swung his Gada.
The weapon struck.
The other Vishnus vanished instantly.
Only the real Vishnu remained.
Vishnu blocked the strike with his own Gada, but Devara had already anticipated the movement.
He rotated his body, changed his grip and brought the weapon around from the opposite side.
Vishnu moved backward.
Devara followed relentlessly.
Their Gadas collided again and again, each impact sending waves of force across the island.
Neither of them was holding back.
Vishnu suddenly disappeared.
Devara immediately stopped.
He did not move.
He waited.
The wind changed.
A faint sound came from behind him.
Devara turned and blocked the incoming strike.
Vishnu smiled.
"Better."
Devara pushed the Gada away.
"You taught me to stop trusting what my eyes see."
"I taught you to stop trusting only your eyes."
Devara grinned.
"There’s a difference."
"Now you understand it."
Vishnu suddenly vanished again.
This time Devara did not move.
He simply stood there, Gada held firmly in both hands, his breathing steady.
The entire island became silent.
Then Devara smiled.
"You’re behind me."
Vishnu appeared.
Devara turned.
Their Gadas collided with such force that the ground beneath them cracked.
For several moments, neither father nor son moved.
They remained locked against each other, divine weapons pressed together, both staring directly into the other’s eyes.
Vishnu’s expression carried quiet satisfaction.
Four years ago, Devara would have reacted to the first illusion.
Then the second. Then the third.
He would have trusted his senses until Maya had completely controlled the battlefield.
Now he could stand in the middle of hundreds of illusions without allowing them to dictate his actions.
He had learned something far more important than simply resisting Maya.
He had learned how to remain himself inside it.
Devara pushed forward.
Vishnu pushed back.
The two Gadas separated once more. And the battle continued.
The battle continued for several more exchanges until both of them were moving almost entirely on instinct.
Their Gadas collided repeatedly, each impact sending vibrations through the barren island, while Maya continued to twist the battlefield around them.
At one moment they were fighting upon the dry ground, the next they were surrounded by a vast ocean, and then the entire island appeared to vanish beneath their feet.
Neither allowed the illusions to control their movements anymore.
They had spent four years learning how to distinguish reality from deception, and now every exchange between them had become a battle of both physical strength and intelligence.
Eventually, Vishnu found an opening.
Devara swung his Gada toward him, but Vishnu stepped inside the attack instead of retreating.
With a precise movement, he struck Devara’s wrist with the shaft of his own weapon.
The impact forced Devara’s fingers open.
His Gada flew from his hand.
Before Devara could recover, Vishnu turned his body and brought his Gada directly into Devara’s chest.
BOOM!
The impact sent Devara flying backward.
Vishnu expected to see his son crash into the ground.
Instead, Devara’s body flickered.
Then it disappeared.
Vishnu’s eyes widened slightly.
He remained completely still for a moment before one eyebrow slowly rose.
"So..."
He looked at the empty space where Devara had been standing.
"That was Maya."
A faint smile appeared on his face.
Vishnu looked around the battlefield, but Devara was nowhere to be seen.
The wind moved across the island.
Nothing else happened.
Vishnu’s smile widened.
"Very clever."
Then his instincts suddenly warned him.
Vishnu immediately moved to the side.
A massive Gada came crashing down exactly where he had been standing.
BOOOOOOOOOOM!
The weapon struck the ground with such tremendous force that the entire island shook.
Cracks exploded outward from the impact point, spreading across the earth for several kilometres.
Stones were thrown into the air, dust erupted from the ground and the barren surface split apart beneath the sheer force of the strike.
Vishnu looked at the enormous crater beside him.
Then he slowly turned toward Devara.
The illusion had vanished.
Devara was standing several metres away, holding his Gada firmly in both hands, a satisfied smile appearing on his face.
For several seconds, father and son simply stared at each other.
Then Vishnu chuckled.
"Very good."
Devara raised an eyebrow.
"You almost fell for it."
Vishnu laughed softly.
"I didn’t almost fall for it. I was simply curious to see how far you had progressed."
Devara gave him an unconvinced look.
"Of course."
Vishnu continued chuckling as he looked at the enormous cracks spreading across the island.
"Four years ago, you would have attacked the first illusion you saw. Today, you created an illusion convincing enough to make me believe I had defeated you, allowed me to lower my guard and then attacked from the blind spot."
He looked directly at Devara.
"Your understanding of Maya has improved considerably."
Devara rested the Gada against his shoulder.
"And my Gada technique?"
Vishnu smiled.
"You still lost your Gada."
Devara’s expression immediately fell.
Vishnu laughed.
"That is something we will continue working on."
Devara sighed and looked at the weapon lying several metres away.
"I was hoping you wouldn’t mention that."
Vishnu’s laughter echoed across the shattered island.
The battle was over.
