Chapter 222: Chapter 222 Could Cedric actually be regretting the divorce?
Ringg!
Ringgggg!
Ringgggggggggg!
The phone kept ringing on the bedside table, its sharp sound filling the otherwise silent bedroom.
Cedric lay sprawled across his bed, one arm resting beside his head as he stared blankly at the ceiling. The room was dark except for the faint glow coming from the bedside lamp, which had been left on for no particular reason. He had been lying there for what felt like hours, turning from one side to the other, pulling the blanket over himself, throwing it away again and doing absolutely nothing that could actually help him fall asleep.
His mind simply refused to cooperate.
No matter how hard he tried to think about something else, the same person kept appearing in his thoughts.
Daisy.
His jaw tightened. He remembered the courthouse. He remembered the way she had stood there quietly, her small hands holding the papers while she signed them. He remembered looking at her, waiting for some kind of hesitation, some sign that she wasn’t completely certain about what she was doing.
But Daisy hadn’t hesitated. She had simply signed and later she left with Alessio.
That particular memory irritated him more than he wanted to admit.
Cedric turned his face toward the other side of the bed and closed his eyes.
He should have been relieved. The divorce was over. He was free. Everything should have felt simple now and less complicated now.
So why did his chest feel so strangely hollow?
Ringgggg!
The phone rang again.
Cedric’s eyes opened. He frowned at the bedside table.
"Shut up..."
The phone continued ringing.
"Shut up."
Ringgggg!
His eyebrows pulled together.
"Shut up, shut up!"
He reached toward the pillow and nearly grabbed it, half tempted to throw it at the phone just to make the irritating sound disappear.
But then he stopped.
A strange thought suddenly crossed his mind. His expression changed. His hand slowly lowered.
Wait. Could it be... Daisy?
His heart gave a sudden, ridiculous little jump. Cedric stared at the phone.
Maybe... Maybe she had finally realized that she had made a mistake.
Perhaps after leaving the courthouse, she had started thinking about everything. Maybe she had remembered all those years they had spent together. Maybe she had remembered their home. Their marriage. The countless ordinary days they had shared.
Maybe she had realized that she didn’t actually want the divorce. Maybe she had regretted walking away. Maybe... She wanted to come back.
A tiny spark of hope appeared in Cedric’s eyes as he sat up quickly. His heartbeat became noticeably faster.
"Daisy..."
The name slipped quietly from his lips. He immediately reached for the phone. His fingers closed around it almost desperately, and he unlocked the screen with surprising speed.
His eyes dropped to the caller ID.
His expression froze.
Jessica.
The tiny spark in his eyes disappeared so quickly. Cedric stared at the name. He didn’t move. Then his shoulders slowly sank.
"Of course."
He let out a long, tired breath and dropped his head back against the pillow.
"Why would it be Daisy?"
He stared at the ceiling again. A moment ago, his heart had been beating faster because he had convinced himself that Daisy might be calling him. Now he felt slightly ridiculous for getting his hopes up so easily.
The phone continued ringing in his hand. Jessica was still calling again and again.
Cedric glanced down at the screen. His expression became increasingly annoyed.
It was almost funny. A few moments ago, he had desperately wanted the phone to ring. Now he desperately wanted it to stop.
Meanwhile...
"Why the heck isn’t he picking up my calls?!"
Jessica stared at her phone in frustration before throwing the cosmetic she had been holding onto the vanity. It landed with a small thud against the surface, making a few of the other cosmetics beside it wobble.
Jessica barely noticed. Her attention remained fixed on the screen.
Cedric.
She had called him several times already. No answer or even messages.
Jessica frowned deeply.
Today was supposed to be the day she had been waiting for. Cedric would finally be divorced from Daisy. For years, she had imagined what it would feel like when that marriage finally ended. She had imagined Cedric calling her immediately afterward, telling her that it was finally over and that he was throwing a party to celebrate.
Instead... He was ignoring her.
"Great..." Jessica folded her arms across her chest. "Just great."
She began pacing around the room, her heels clicking against the floor with every frustrated step. This was not a good sign. Not at all.
Wasn’t Cedric supposed to be relieved? Wasn’t he the one who had complained about Daisy over and over again? Wasn’t he the one who had told Jessica countless times that his marriage was nothing more than a burden? Wasn’t he the one who had promised that eventually, somehow, he would end it?
And now that the divorce had actually happened, why was he behaving like a man who had just lost someone?
Jessica suddenly stopped. Her brows slowly pulled together.
Something wasn’t right.
"What is wrong with him?"
She looked down at her phone again. Cedric’s name was still displayed on the screen.
Jessica stared at it for several seconds before pressing the call button again.
Ring...
Ring...
Ring...
Her expression became more impatient with every ring. "Come on..."
Ring...
"Pick up."
Ring...
Nothing.
The call eventually ended.
Jessica lowered the phone slowly. Her irritation was beginning to turn into something else.
Suspicion.
Could Cedric actually be regretting the divorce?
Her stomach twisted at the thought.
"No." She immediately shook her head. "That can’t be."
Cedric had chosen her. He had promised her that once the divorce was finalized, they could finally be together properly. He had told her that he would marry her.
He couldn’t suddenly start missing Daisy now. Could he?
Jessica bit her lower lip. But then an uncomfortable thought entered her mind.
What if Cedric had only thought he wanted the divorce? What if seeing Daisy actually leave had made him realize that he still cared about her?
Jessica’s fingers tightened around the phone.
"No..."
She refused to entertain that possibility.
Jessica looked at herself in the mirror. Her expression slowly changed, the irritation in her eyes was replaced by determination.
If Cedric was distracted because of Daisy, then sitting here and waiting for him to call wasn’t going to solve anything. She needed to see him. She needed to know what was going through his mind.
And more importantly, she needed to remind him that he wasn’t alone anymore.
She picked up her phone again and glanced at Cedric’s name. Her lips curved into a small, determined smile.
"Fine... If you won’t pick up my calls..."
She slipped her phone into her handbag.
"...then I’ll just have to come find you myself."
