Chapter 208: Chapter 208 Why don’t I feel sad?
The next morning.
Daisy had already gotten ready. She chose a simple outfit, a soft cream-colored blouse and a long beige skirt, and carefully fixed her hair. But there was something distracted in her expression as she looked at herself in the mirror.
Today was supposed to be the day everything changed.
Her divorce.
Even thinking about it made her heart feel strange. A tightness she couldn’t quite name. A heaviness and a weird feeling in her stomach that refused to leave.
Downstairs, Grandpa James had decided to stay at home for the night rather than return to the hospital. After everything that had happened during the birthday celebration, he wanted to spend some time at home and Daisy was secretly relieved to know he was nearby.
Margaret hadn’t been able to attend the birthday celebration because, while she had been running the errands James had asked her to take care of, she had received a call that her youngest child had become sick. She had immediately gone home, her heart torn between her duty to James and her love for her children. She had wanted to come to celebrate even late but Grandpa James had told her not to worry about him.
"You don’t need to come back tonight," he had told her over the phone. "Stay with the child and take care of them."
But Margaret had insisted, her voice firm despite the worry in it. Grandpa James didn’t listen to her. He had simply told her that the child came first and that he would be fine.
By morning, fortunately, her youngest child was feeling much better. Margaret’s mother was staying with the children and looking after them, which allowed Margaret to return without worrying too much. She adored her children and was always especially protective of them but she also cared deeply about Grandpa James and didn’t want to leave him alone.
When she finally arrived, she found James sitting in the living room with Daisy nearby. The morning light streamed through the windows, casting warm patterns across the floor.
"Good morning," Margaret said as she walked inside. She set her bag down near the door and removed her coat.
James looked up. "Margaret."
She smiled faintly before noticing the unusual seriousness on his face. His eyes were tired and his shoulders were slumped. Something was wrong.
"What happened?"
James sighed. The sound was heavy, filled with exhaustion.
"Sit down."
Margaret immediately became concerned. She placed her bag aside and sat opposite him, her hands clasped in her lap.
"What is it?"
James glanced toward Daisy. Daisy was sitting quietly, her hands resting in her lap. Her eyes were lowered and her expression was unreadable but there was a stillness about her that made Margaret’s heart skip a beat.
Margaret followed his gaze. Her eyes moved between them.
"Is Daisy alright?"
"She is," James said. "But yesterday..."
He paused. There was so much to explain that he didn’t know where to begin. He took a slow breath and began.
Eventually, he told Margaret everything. He told her about Cedric and Jessica. He told her about what had happened when he discovered them. He told her about the argument afterward. He told her that Daisy and Cedric were going to divorce.
Margaret’s eyes grew wider with every sentence. Her mouth opened slightly, and her hands tightened in her lap.
"Wait..." She stared at James in disbelief. "Cedric was... with Jessica?"
James nodded.
Margaret’s mouth fell slightly open. "And you caught them yourself?"
"Yes."
"Heaven..." She covered her mouth with her hand. Her eyes were wide with shock and her voice trembled.
Then she looked toward Daisy. Daisy lowered her eyes, her fingers curling against her skirt.
Margaret’s expression immediately softened. "Poor child..."
She reached over and gently took Daisy’s hand. Her touch was warm, motherly. Daisy looked at her, her eyes glassy.
Margaret squeezed her fingers. "I can’t believe she had to go through all of that."
James sighed. "Neither can I."
Margaret looked back at him. Her eyes were filled with sorrow and anger.
"Cedric was such a good boy. Why would he cheat on our sweet Daisy?" Margaret said sadly, still holding Daisy’s hand. Her thumb brushed gently over Daisy’s knuckles, a soft, comforting gesture. "He didn’t even realize what he was losing. Honestly, I can’t believe it..."
She pulled back slightly and looked at Daisy’s face. Her eyes were filled with sorrow and anger, a mixture of emotions that made her voice tremble.
"I am so sorry, sweetheart."
Daisy simply nodded. Her expression was calm. She expected herself to feel heartbroken. She had been married to Cedric for three years. Three years of her life. She had once loved him deeply, had spent countless days hoping he would eventually look at her differently and had quietly endured the loneliness of a marriage that never felt like a real marriage.
Yet now that the end was actually here... She felt strangely calm. There was no overwhelming sadness. Not even the pain she had expected to feel when she finally walked away from him.
Daisy herself didn’t understand it. She lowered her eyes and looked at her hands. Her fingers were still, resting in her lap.
Why don’t I feel sad?
Perhaps she had already cried enough over Cedric long before anyone else knew their marriage was ending. Perhaps somewhere along the way, her heart had simply become tired of waiting. Or perhaps she had already accepted that their relationship had ended long before the divorce papers would make it official.
Whatever the reason, she couldn’t explain the strange indifference inside her.
Margaret gently touched her cheek. Her fingers were warm against Daisy’s skin. "You’re alright?"
Daisy looked up and nodded. A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips but it didn’t quite reach her eyes.
Margaret studied her for a moment before pulling her into a tight hug. Her arms wrapped around Daisy, holding her close. Daisy closed her eyes and leaned into the embrace, letting herself be held.
James watched the two of them quietly. His old eyes were tired but warm.
"Don’t worry," he said, trying to lighten the atmosphere. His voice was gentle, almost cheerful. "They will get divorced by today."
He looked at Daisy with a warm smile. "And Daisy will finally be happy without that cheater."
Daisy’s eyes became moist. She blinked rapidly, trying to keep the tears from falling. She was grateful that he was by her side. Grateful for Margaret’s warmth, for Grandpa James’s unconditional support.
