Chapter 179 Hannya
Looking at the shopkeeper with an expression of doubt, Noah just stood there waiting for the explanation.
The man, of course, noticed the young man's mild interest and took the opportunity to brag in the best possible way of that mask that had been on the shelf in his store for several years. "This mask was made by a legendary blacksmith using countless legendary materials that made it indestructible even for Blessed Rank C. Legend has it..." But before the man could finish what he was saying, he realized that the young man had completely lost interest, as if he had seen through his lies and turned again to leave, without even saying anything. "Wait, wait! Okay, I'll tell you the truth..."
Noah had actually been a little curious when he saw that the man had something to say, but after the man had started talking a lot about stories he probably made up about legendary things, Noah just lost interest and felt this was not worth it his time. But after Noah heard the sincerity in the man's voice when he asked him to stay there again, Noah decided to give the man a second chance, however he was determined that it would be the last.
"This mask was found by my father a few years ago in a Fortress. When I said about this mask being resistant even to Blessed Rank C, it was true. He was friends with a Blessed Rank C and when he showed the mask to the man, even though the man was trying hard to break this mask, he didn't succeed. But as the mask hindered their vision a little, neither of them thought it would be useful in a Fortress, so my father left it kept at home as a decoration. I decided to get rid of the mask, and as expensive as it may seem, I can't charge less for something so resistant," the man said in a tone of honesty, "If you still don't believe me, you can test its strength yourself. I guarantee that as long as you don't use a Strength Blessing of Rank C or higher, since this hasn't been tested, the mask will not break."
Noah felt that the man was being sincere. At no time did he look away or give any sign of the usual nervousness given off by a liar, as he had when he concocted that absurd story he was telling initially.
Curious, Noah approached the man and took the mask to test whether it was truly as resistant as he had said and Noah was actually surprised. He already had a higher strength than a Blessed Rank D because of the statistics he had received from the dwarves in the train Fortress, but even so, he was unable to bend it a little, or even break the mask slightly.
"Can I put it on to see how it feels?" Noah asked the man, wanting to see if the mask would truly limit his vision somewhat. He didn't particularly care about that. After all, he had an ability that allowed him to see even with his eyes closed, but he was still curious to see what it was like.
Seeing the man's nod of confirmation, Noah calmly took the mask that looked like it was made of porcelain with the design of the face of a carved red Oni, which strangely reminded Noah of the imps.
When he put on the mask, Noah was quite surprised. Instead of the expected lack of vision that the mask would provide for him, Noah felt that his spatial perception, the Pyakugan, had become even clearer.
Unlike the almost 3 meters that he could see without the mask, with this mask he was able to see almost 10 meters in all directions. And wearing that was giving him a strange feeling of comfort, totally different from the discomfort it seemed to give an average person when wearing it.
It was as if this porcelain, or whatever the material of which that mask was made, was a part of him, and as soon as he put on the mask, it stuck to his skin and became one with him.
Curious, he looked at the man and asked. "Do you know what this mask is made of?"
But completely different from what he had imagined, the man did not answer his question, and only showed an expression of shock as he looked at Noah slightly startled. "You... this... how is it possible?..." The man mumbled to himself as he stared at Noah in amazement.
Noah did not understand what the man had meant by that, so he went towards one of the mirrors that the store had spread inside and saw his own reflection.
At first Noah didn't notice anything strange about the reflection that would justify the man's strange reaction. But when he was about to ask the man what was wrong, he realized that something had changed in his reflection.
The movement he made with his own mouth was somehow replicated by the mask. If he opened his mouth, the mask would open, if he stuck out his tongue, a forked tongue like a snake's would come out of the mask's mouth and perfectly imitate the movement Noah was ordering for it to do.
Seeing his reflection, Noah felt that the mask was fitted to his face; in fact, he felt as if the mask was a virtual representation of his face, the same feeling he had when he saw his character on Valorwatch doing the things he told it to in a mirror. He knew it wasn't him, but somehow it also seemed like it was him.
Noah could tell that the mask was not his face: he felt that the skin was not his, that the mouth was not his, that none of it was him; but still, it looked as if it really were.
Touching the red skin of the mask, which before looked as cold as porcelain, this time it felt completely different. It was as if he were actually touching the skin of something alive, as if the mask was actually the face of a person, or monster, or Oni, or demon; Noah still didn't know what it was.
But because of the diminished sensitivity to touch, he still knew that the red skin was just a mask and not his real skin. Noah was relieved. 'Fortunately this mask did not turn me into a monster. For a few moments I thought about the possibility of becoming someone with a colorful face and a yellow suit.'
Removing the mask from his face more easily than he imagined he would have been able, Noah looked at the salesman and ignored the previous question he had asked. Most likely this mask has something to do with hell, and the man would hardly know the origin of it, so he just changed the question. "What is your bank account where you'd want the money transfered?."
Leaving the store, Noah was quite satisfied. Buying something that increased his Pyakugan's reach by more than three times for just $1,000 was certainly worth it, not to mention that this mask would apparently be the best thing he could use to hide his identity at the times he needed it. It allowed for him to practically become someone else, and he also noticed that it was impossible to see his real face when he was wearing it.
For someone like him who needed something to hide his own identity for the Imps trade, this was perfect. At that point Noah started to be grateful. Maybe the system was changing his fate a little, or maybe this was predestined a long time ago, but like Lilith, such a big coincidence was very unlikely to have happened without any outside intervention.
'Or maybe I just found a part of the things that I could find that are scattered around the world? The probability of there being more things is pretty high. Maybe I found two things like Lilith and the mask was a small drop in the potential things I could find? Maybe I will find a weapon for myself somewhere in this world? It would be nice to have a good weapon, and not have to rely on [Fire Daggers] most of the time to attack. Perhaps a Lucifer dagger? Or who knows, a scythe, a bow, a sword?... I don't know any weapon, as long as it has good usability and quality would be welcome,' Noah thought excitedly as he considered the possibilities.
[Ding! Congratulations to the user for finding a ! The artifact found was a Japanese Hannya. As hell is very big, there were several different zones for different people with different cultures. The mask that the user found is a Hannya, used by demons to adopt the appearance imagined by the people who believed in these Onis.]
Noah was surprised by the warning and the system's explanation of the mask. With that simple explanation, Noah got more information about hell than he previously had imagined.
*Boom, boom*
Explosions sounded close to where Noah was, making him a little worried about what was going on. This type of explosion was somewhat familiar to Noah, as he had already witnessed a crumbling Fortress.
In such moments, the monsters inside the Fortress would break through a portal and exit it like a small tsunami, attacking everything nearby and killing as many humans as possible. It was the responsibility of the government and the Blessed to deal with these monsters.
A young friend of Noah's when he was little died in one of those accidents, making Noah now worry and run to the origin of the tremor to understand what was going on.
