Chapter 216: Chapter 214: The Special Female Assistant

"I understand."

"Thank you, Matchmaker Zhang." Yang Hui stood up and thanked Zhang Zhe formally.

Mrs. Yang, however, showed no intention of getting up. Instead, she pulled her daughter back down, wanting her to sit a little longer.

She still had something to say:

"Matchmaker, I heard from President Bai that you’re not married yet?"

"You seem like a great catch. Have you given any thought to settling down?"

’Huh?’ Zhang Zhe wasn’t a narcissist, but her implication couldn’t have been more obvious.

’Old Bai really is a true brother, introducing a girl from a family like this to me.’

But before Mrs. Yang could elaborate, a gentle and crisp female voice came from outside the door. "He isn’t married, but he’s not single."

Hearing the familiar voice, Zhang Zhe couldn’t help but smile.

’Who else but Xia Yi would have the standing to say something like that?’

In fact, Miss Xia had arrived some time ago.

She was just outside the door. When she saw Yang Hui’s younger brother squatting by the entrance playing a game on his phone, she immediately knew the matchmaking agency had clients, so she tactfully stayed outside.

But when she heard someone asking about Zhang Zhe’s marriage prospects, she couldn’t hold back any longer.

’Can’t let someone steal my man right in front of me, can I?’

Her timing was perfect, and Zhang Zhe played along perfectly, smiling as he stood up and led her to the seat beside him.

Looking at the two of them together, a flicker of disappointment crossed Mrs. Yang’s eyes.

Yang Hui, on the other hand, was full of envy. She had no idea about her mother’s little scheme.

Seeing Zhang Zhe and his girlfriend, then thinking about her own boyfriend, left a bitter taste in her mouth. She instantly wanted to leave.

"Mom, we’ve finished the consultation. Settle the fee with Matchmaker Zhang, and let’s get going."

"Alright." Mrs. Yang, thinking her daughter was unhappy, quickly took out her phone to look for a QR code to scan for payment.

"Old Bai already paid the consultation fee."

"That won’t do. What Old Bai paid is his business. Matchmaker Zhang, you can put it on his tab. When he’s ready for his second marriage, he can come to you for a consultation."

"We need to pay our own way."

Mrs. Yang was a woman of principle.

But so was Zhang Zhe.

He waved his hand. "I don’t double-charge here."

"As for the money, you can discuss it with Old Bai."

"If you have any more questions later, you can always come back and see me."

"If it comes to it, you can bring Miss Yang’s boyfriend over, and I’ll take a look for you."

"Oh, that would be wonderful!" Mrs. Yang nodded excitedly. "Okay, we’ll go back and discuss it."

"Thank you, Matchmaker Zhang."

"Don’t mention it." Zhang Zhe smiled as he saw the mother and daughter out.

As they left, Yang Hui’s younger brother was still engrossed in his game, shouting something like, "Is the boss fat?"

Seeing this, Zhang Zhe suddenly understood why Yang Hui had so little confidence in her ability to shoulder the family’s burdens first and wait for her brother to mature.

’How long is that going to take?’

After the two left and Zhang Zhe returned to the shop, he found that Xia Yi had already tidied up the coffee table.

Now she was cleaning his livestreaming desk.

Zhang Zhe hurried over and intercepted the chore she’d chosen, playfully stealing her task and leaving her with nothing to do.

As they bustled about, they caught each other’s eye and burst out laughing at the same time.

"You really don’t want me to help you with the chores, huh?"

"Of course not. I’m just proving I’m capable of doing housework," Zhang Zhe replied as he bagged up the trash.

In reality, at home, all he was responsible for was mopping the floor and taking out the trash.

He was a lot like Xia Yi; they were both the spoiled kids in their families.

But having learned by observing their parents, they both looked quite competent when they got to work.

The matchmaking agency, which Zhang Zhe had let slide for several days, was completely transformed half an hour later.

Exhausted, the two of them were half-lying side-by-side on the sofa.

It was only then that Xia Yi asked in a low voice:

"Zhang Zhe, who were that mother and daughter from earlier?"

"The family of the owner of Old Yang Furniture City."

"The one that used to be next to Bubugao Supermarket?"

"Yes, that’s the one," Zhang Zhe explained carefully.

After all, the timing of her entrance had been a bit awkward and could have easily led to a misunderstanding.

But Miss Xia wasn’t being needlessly jealous.

She was just curious.

After hearing Zhang Zhe’s explanation, Xia Yi sat up, propped her chin on her hand, and said, "Why does it seem like getting married is so complicated for them? They have to factor in so many things."

"It’s not normally like this," Zhang Zhe explained. "It’s this way for them because the most crucial person in their marriage equation, Yang Hui’s father, has passed away."

"It’s like a family dividing an elder’s inheritance. They’ve almost sorted everything out, but then they suddenly realize the most important item, the elder’s bank book, is missing."

"In that case, all the previous arrangements have to be scrapped, and they have to start over."

"I see." Xia Yi turned her head, looked at Zhang Zhe, and asked hesitantly, "Dealing with this kind of thing every day... doesn’t it make you lose faith in marriage?"

"Like how doctors who do paternity tests and lawyers who specialize in divorce cases don’t believe in love."

"Not at all. You’ve got the cause and effect backward."

Zhang Zhe shook his head with a smile.

"I became a matchmaker *because* I believe in marriage."

"If I didn’t believe people could be happy in marriage, I’d have become one of those online ’break-up gurus.’"

"I’d just tell everyone who comes to me to break up."

"You chew with your mouth open, he snores in his sleep? You don’t even have the same flaws? Break up!"

"You like sweet zongzi, but your boyfriend likes savory ones? How can you possibly celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival together? Break up!"

"You’re a man and your girlfriend is a woman? Different genders? You’ll never be able to understand each other. Break up!"

"Hahaha, you’re hilarious." Xia Yi covered her mouth, giggling uncontrollably.

Once she’d had a good laugh, Zhang Zhe asked her:

"Why did you come over today?"

"Weren’t you supposed to come with your mom tomorrow?"

"You have the nerve to ask? If I hadn’t come early, I never would’ve known what a mess this place was." Xia Yi pouted. "It’s a good thing Lanlan reminded me."

"Her? She’s the one who reminded you?"

Zhang Zhe hadn’t expected Xia Yi’s female colleague to be so generous and thoughtful.

"Yeah. She said I should come over and get to know you better."

"And I thought, that’s right. I should come over first and get familiar with your work environment. That way, if my mom starts finding fault with things, I can stick up for you."

"Aren’t you going to stream in a bit?"

A mischievous smile appeared on Xia Yi’s face.

"I’m going to be your female assistant."

"Don’t the viewers in your stream call you Brother Zhang? In that case, I’ll be their sister-in-law."

"No, no, no. Some of the guys in the stream are perverts. They have a thing for ’sister-in-laws’." Zhang Zhe interrupted Xia Yi’s whimsical idea. "Don’t show your face on camera later. Between the two of us, one person in the spotlight is enough."

Zhang Zhe would never dare use his girlfriend as bait to attract viewers.

However, he was a hundred percent willing to have Xia Yi work part-time as his assistant.

This way, he’d finally have someone to help him ban the spammers.

「At 2 p.m.」 After lunch and a short nap on the sofa, Zhang Zhe and Xia Yi went into the streaming room together.

He watched Xia Yi, her face a picture of concentration as she operated her phone.

Zhang Zhe thought to himself, ’What is this? A husband-and-wife team?’

’Nice. My credibility as a matchmaker is getting stronger and stronger.’
