Chapter 508.1: A Life for A Life (1)
Despite being one of the most prominent clans on the Sia Continent, the Sorofyas knew next to nothing about their own lineage.
Seven hundred years ago, after the Six Calamities destroyed the Sofya Kingdom, the high elf lineage went under the radar for a long time. It was already centuries later by the time the Sorofyas came to prominence as an economic powerhouse.
The sharp intuition for money intrinsic to the High Elf Bloodline allowed the Sorofyas to easily achieve success in their business dealings, and they quickly became the most affluent house on the Sia Continent.
Unfortunately, they had already lost much of their high elf heritage by then, resulting in their weak military might compared to the Sofya Kingdom, which was known as a naval powerhouse.
That was why Charlotte’s return from the Witness State with the high elf lineage’s lost spells and technologies was a huge deal. Not only did it fill the blank slate of the Sorofyas’ heritage, but it also significantly enhanced Rosa’s military prowess in all aspects.
Even so, the Sorofyas remained largely ignorant about their lineage’s history. Their relationship with the Six Calamities was a good example of that.
“Administrator?”
“Yes, that was the responsibility of the high elves back in the ancient era. That’s also the reason Jewel Magic is able to suppress the Six Calamities.”
“That means that…”
“Yes, it’s no coincidence that you and Uncle Bruce were cursed by Flooding Death. In the worst-case scenario, the calamities might come after you too.”
“…”
On the bed, Roel shared the information he had just deduced with Charlotte. She was initially startled by the revelation, but her expression soon turned grim. Many things that didn’t make sense to her were finally clicking together.
She did think that it was weird how Isabella Sofya, despite only being an Origin Level 2 transcendent, was able to seal off Glacier Creator.
While Glacier Creator wasn’t in its strongest state then, the Six Calamities were unstoppable entities that had brought down countless ancient civilizations. These destroyed civilizations were bound to have resorted to every means they had at their disposal, only to fail in the end. It didn’t make sense for an Origin Level 2 transcendent to have successfully sealed off one of the Six Calamities, even if it was just an egg.
If what Roel had deduced about the High Elf Bloodline was true, everything would make perfect sense.
However, there was one minor detail that bothered Charlotte—it was odd for Roel to suddenly mention this when they were in the midst of discussing the matter of their offspring.
“Darling, the reason you’re telling me all of this… does this have something to do with our child?”
“You can say so.”
Roel carefully chose his words before sharing his conjecture with Charlotte.
“While a transcendent can only awaken to one bloodline, both your High Elf Bloodline and my Kingmaker Bloodline have a strong suppression effect on the Six Calamities. A combination of those two might lead to something unprecedented.”
Roel continued his explanation by stating two possibilities.
One, their offspring could awaken to the High Elf Bloodline. That wouldn’t be a big issue since the Kingmaker Bloodline was practically useless unless awakened, making their offspring the same as any other member of the Sorofya House.
Two, their offspring could awaken to the Kingmaker Bloodline. This could be something huge.
Unlike the Kingmaker Bloodline, the High Elf Bloodline had intrinsic properties that could be described as racial traits. It was similar to how the offspring of a human and a dragon would possess some dragon traits, even if they didn’t awaken to their Dragon Bloodline.
One of the racial traits of the High Elf Bloodline was affinity for Jewel Magic.
In other words, if Roel and Charlotte’s offspring awakened to the Kingmaker Bloodline, the world might find itself with a transcendent who wielded both the Crown Origin Attribute and high-level Jewel Magic.
With the combined prowess of the ancient gods, Jewel Magic, and the two bloodlines, that transcendent would practically be the nemesis of the Six Calamities. That would be a force that could potentially crush even mature calamities!
There was no way the calamities would tolerate such an existence. Even if they were unable to discern the intricacies regarding the union of the Ascarts and the Sorofyas, it was a safe bet to assume they had a sharp intuition for potential threats.
“Recently, I have been wondering if Sire Darkness truly attacked the Golden Fleet in order to save Glacier Creator’s egg. There have been no known precedents of the calamities cooperating with each other, so I can’t help but doubt its true purpose. Is it be possible that…”
“Darling, are you saying that…”
Charlotte’s emerald eyes slowly widened in shock. Seeing that she had caught his drift, Roel didn’t elaborate.
What he was proposing was the possibility that Sire Darkness’ true target back then wasn’t Glacier Creator but the one attempting to seal it off. It was trying to stop the union of Winstor Ascart and Isabella Sofya out of fear of the offspring that could be born between them.
If that speculation was true, Roel and Charlotte would surely face even more attacks from the Six Calamities in the future, and it wouldn’t end until one of them died.
Roel didn’t voice that aloud because he didn’t think that there was enough evidence to back up his theory, but Charlotte was able to guess most of it herself, causing her to clench her fists in unease. Noticing her worries, he tried to console her.
“These are all my speculations. I might be thinking too much into it. In the first place, we haven’t been able to make sense of the relationship between the Six Calamities yet. It is entirely possible that they are telepathically linked to each other, and Sire Darkness was simply seeking to rescue Glacier Creator’s egg.”
“But looking back on the history of our clans, the calamities only strike whenever members of our clans have intimate contact with each other. That’s the case for Isabella and Winstor… and it’s the same for you and me. Don’t you think that’s too much of a coincidence? Even if it’s really just a coincidence, what about our child then?”
“…”
Charlotte looked at Roel, her eyes brimming with worry. The latter fell silent.
Regardless of whether the Six Calamities had the sharp intuition to detect potential danger, the fact that their child would become a natural nemesis of the Six Calamities meant their fight with those ancient monsters would continue to the next generation.
It was inevitable that their child would be implicated in it as well.
Roel gave the matter some thought while gently stroking Charlotte’s hair to console her. Under her worried gaze, he slowly replied.
“Catching the attention of those ancient monsters in an era of peace would have spelled a catastrophe, but things are different in our present era.”
“Our present era? Are you referring to the invasion of the deviants?”
“That, and the Tripartite Alliance’s apocalyptic prophecy too.”
Roel contemplatively looked out of the window as he recalled the contents of the records preserved in the Knight Kingdom.
