The turn-in for permits one-twelve and one-fifteen cleared the Third Ring counter before the weak plateau sun even reached its midday mark.

The clerk with the clockwork brass eye audited the three sealed crocks of pressurized basilisk venom alongside the twelve armor plates harvested from the centipedes in the south culvert. He weighed the haul on his hanging spring scale, struck the military quartermaster's black stamp onto the ledgers, and counted out seventy hundred-scrip Central Bank notes across the wooden counter.

With seven thousand more scrip in their leather pouch and their pockets weighted down with clean copper ingots stripped from the carcasses, they made their way back to the Boilermakers' Village.

The ground-floor workshop of townhouse forty-two was cool, insulated against the heat of neighboring forges by thirteen-foot walls of solid basalt.

Maria had rested her black boiler steel greatsword in the iron rack, settling onto the cobblestones of the inner courtyard to dress the tip of her blade with fine wet sandpaper slicked with kerosene.

Nicole sat on a stool beside the oak workbench, using a flathead screwdriver to adjust the cable tension on her repeating crossbow.

Dante sat at the far end of the bench, tallying the week's earnings across the final page of his notebook.

He tapped the tip of his pen against the paper, lifting his gray eyes to study the huntress.

Across their last two incursions into the mire, Dante had observed Nicole's combat patterns with meticulous focus. The girl possessed razor reflexes, dead-eye marksmanship with silver bolts, and an agile frame that could scale vertical surfaces in seconds.

Yet there was a glaring void on her sheet.

She utilized zero formal combat stances logged by the interface. She projected no impact auras and wielded no concentrated burst skills comparable to Maria's [Seismic Rift] or his own [Forced Transposition]. Nicole's entire operational output stemmed purely from raw baseline attributes and manual tools.

"Nicole," Dante called out, his voice level and composed.

The girl paused her adjustments to the crossbow's tension screw, lifting all four amber slit-pupils toward him.

"What is it?"

"Have you ever selected a formal class specialization on that screen of yours?"

Nicole's hands froze.

Her screwdriver rested on the metal receiver with a dry clink.

She tugged the sleeves of her black-scaled coat down over her wrists, the small chitin mandibles beneath her lips clicking with a subtle discomfort she attempted to mask by glancing toward the open workshop doorway.

"I am a Level 22 Trench Huntress," she answered, her voice dropping half an octave, slightly defensive. "That is what my interface records."

"Trench Huntress is a generic Tier Two survival archetype," Dante countered with clinical precision. "It's the baseline profile any demon or damned soul develops through pure biological adaptation after four years of crawling through drainage ditches. The third tab of your menu has had three formal specialization paths locked and awaiting point allocation ever since you reached Level 20."

Maria paused her whetstone out in the courtyard, resting the broad flat of her two-meter blade against the cobblestones as she looked inside.

"You're Level 22 and your class is still a blank slate, girl?" Maria asked, her deep voice tinged with genuine astonishment. "I burned my Sentinel points the very minute that screen opened before my nose."

Nicole looked down at her bare hands, where calluses from crossbow strings marked the base of her fingers.

"You two assume everyone had the easy ride you had," Nicole murmured, an old bitterness edging her words. "In the empire, anyone born in a free colony only picks a formal class inside Legion barracks or within Citadel artisan guildhalls. You sit in a brass chair, lay your palm on an ether scanner, and a captain stamps your specialization into the central records registry."

She locked her gaze onto Dante.

"I was fourteen when I ran from that square with my mother's talisman around my neck. If I had walked into a guild post to register a formal class, the intake scanner on the counter would have pulled my mother's lineage from the civil registry, and military police would have cuffed me on the spot. I locked the third tab and never touched it again."

"The interface sends no reports to the Citadel, Nicole," Dante explained with practiced, methodical patience. "Your soul matrix is an isolated, closed circuit. The military government only learns your class if you walk up to a physical counter and sign a parchment with an ink-stained thumb. The system inside your head operates independently of whoever sits on that palace throne."

Nicole blinked her multifaceted corneas slowly.

She flattened her right hand over the oak workbench, closing her eyes for half a beat to summon the interface with pure mental intent.

[Shared Channel: Class Matrix Display.]

A translucent silver window opened in the air between Dante and Nicole, casting three glowing lines of script over the clean timber of the bench.

Maria rose from the courtyard, padding barefoot into the workshop to read the options over the huntress's shoulder.

The three Full Tier Two specializations were arrayed there, primed for immediate consolidation:

A gentle source reminder: this page copied the author's chapter without consent, while reading it on the author's official page supports them.

[Option 1: Chitinous Ambusher (Biological Branch).]

[Focus: Amplification of native physical mutations, extension of climbing talons, and secretion of paralyzing toxins through the dermal layer.]

[Option 2: Concealed Ballistics Marksman (Precision Branch).]

[Focus: Heavy long-range ordnance, recoil negation on rifles, and increased critical penetration against cast-iron armor.]

[Option 3: Ether Shadow Lurker (Mystical Stealth Branch).]

[Focus: Dissipation of thermal and visual signatures, armor severance using light cold arms, and rapid repositioning between blind spots.]

Maria folded her arms over her gray shirt, reviewing the choices with a pragmatic scowl.

"The second option is garbage," Maria gave her verdict without hesitation. "You saw what happened to that crane sniper, Miro. He packed a fifty-caliber heavy rifle and a brass scope. The second Dante blew apart his railing with a dart and I cleared the ladder, the guy was a helpless pile of bones with no close-quarters defense. Pure long-range is a death trap the moment a monster leaps for your throat."

"What about the first option?" Nicole pointed toward the Chitinous Ambusher. "I already have these talons on my boots and these mandibles on my face. The system says this doubles the shearing force of my claws."

"That first path forces your body into sustained melee in the mud," Dante stepped in, his thirty-four Intelligence dissecting the build's flaws. "You have ninety-five hit points and lizard leather that deflects only glancing cuts. If you try trading claws with a Ferrite Peccary or a Tier Three automaton, the monster's raw physical mass crushes you before the venom in your nails can even circulate. Our vanguard is already held by Maria, who possesses thirty-two Constitution, a hundred and sixty hit points, and a forty-eight-pound greatsword."

He reached out and tapped the third line on the display: Ether Shadow Lurker.

"What our fireteam requires is neither a second iron tank nor a stationary sniper pinned to a girder," Dante continued with his customary airtight logic. "We need a rapid executioner. Someone capable of dropping off thermal detection, flanking Maria's frontline, and driving twin daggers through a boss's power core from behind while its focus is locked onto the greatsword."

Nicole leaned closer, studying the fine print of the third path.

The foundational skills of the Ether Shadow Lurker expanded beneath the header:

[Initial Active Skill: [Ether Dissipation Cloak - Tier 1].]

[Activation Cost: 15 MP.]

[Duration: 12 seconds.]

[Effect: Nullifies thermal, acoustic, and visual emissions while moving in stealth or dim light. The first strike delivered from concealment ignores 35% of the target's natural armor.]

[Initial Passive Skill: [Critical Point Piercing - Tier 1].]

[Effect: Attacks with daggers or short bolts against neural junctions or Mana cores inflict 40% additional pure kinetic damage.]

Nicole read every word, her vertical slit pupils fully dilated.

That skill profile required no operating table in a Citadel laboratory, nor did it demand a military oath recorded in a Legion registry.

It was the direct evolution of everything she had been forced to learn on her own inside the freezing culverts of Canal Five just to keep from being torn apart by patrol hounds.

"This..." She brushed the hovering window with bare fingertips. "...this is what I already do. Only backed by real Mana."

"With the system accelerating your every stride, Nicole," Dante confirmed. "Maria draws the monster's aggro with the thunder of black boiler steel. I disrupt the target's rotation with slowing darts or drop it into prime position with [Forced Transposition]. And you slip in from the blind side under the [Dissipation Cloak] to sever primary conduits before the beast can even pivot its neck."

Maria brought a heavy palm down onto the oak workbench, making Dante's pen jump an inch into the air.

"That's the play, girl," Maria said with a wide grin. "Hit the confirmation button and stop scrapping like a street cutpurse. We have a four-thousand-scrip permit opening tomorrow morning, and I want to see those daggers gleaming in the dark of that marsh."

Nicole looked at Dante.

The youth held her gaze without pressure, waiting for her independent confirmation.

Nicole drew a slow breath through her nose, channeled her mental intent toward the core of her chest, and pressed the third option with the tip of her forefinger.

[Soul Path Confirmation:]

[Primary Class Consolidated: Ether Shadow Lurker (Level 22).]

[Attribute Recalculation and Alignment Underway...]

A wave of cool air, entirely scrubbed of ash particles, washed from the roots of Nicole's dark hair down to the soles of her bare feet.

The fine scales of her black coat seemed to swallow the yellow glare of the workshop's arc lamps, shedding all reflective sheen to settle into an opaque, light-devouring finish.

The chitin mandibles along her jaw settled under her skin with renewed firmness, and her leg muscles coiled with an elastic spring tension that felt completely weightless against the timber floorboards.

[Mana Points Increased: 45 -> 75 MP.]

[Dexterity: 26 -> 29 (+3).]

[Active Skill Acquired: [Ether Dissipation Cloak - Tier 1].]

[Passive Skill Acquired: [Critical Point Piercing - Tier 1].]

Nicole turned both hands upward, flexing her long fingers.

She could feel her newly expanded pool of seventy-five Mana humming steady and cool within her chest, seamlessly wired into the neural pathways governing her combat reflexes.

She drew the right dagger from her hip with a flick of her wrist that made zero sound of steel against leather.

The straight black-iron blade felt like an unbroken extension of her own arm, primed to shear through armor plate without demanding sledgehammer leverage.

"How does it feel?" Maria asked, cocking her head.

Nicole took two swift strides across the workshop flagstones, moving with an eerie lightness that failed to kick up a single mote of dust from the floor.

Her amber eyes burned with a razor confidence she had never displayed before.

"Feels like I dropped twenty pounds of lead off my boots," Nicole answered, seating the dagger back into its sheath with a light tap of her thumb.

She looked at Dante with a clean half-smile, her pointed ears showing no trace of flush this time.

"The team is ready, Dante."

Dante shut his notebook with a crisp snap, rising from his stool with the quiet certainty that the final piece of the operational engine had locked into place.

The Capital still waited with its Tier Three horrors and its sixty-foot steel walls, but the three hunters inside that townhouse were no longer desperate prey scrambling through the smoke. They were an integrated strike unit prepared to tear through every contract this continent threw in their path.
