Chapter 295: Chapter 284: The Plan Must Continue

In this seemingly endless ball, only one person was not dancing.

He appeared to be in his forties, dressed like a pianist, and was sitting in a corner of the ballroom. His hands flew through the air as if a real piano were in front of him.

Although not a single note sounded, the pianist’s face was filled with intoxicated self-forgetfulness. He held his head high, eyes shut tight, and shook his head back and forth as if passionately performing some masterpiece.

This performance continued until six in the morning, when the socialites on the dance floor finally seemed to have had their fill. They collapsed limply onto the floor, completely still.

The pianist then rose from his invisible piano, bowing and waving to all sides as if thanking an audience for their adoration and applause.

Yet, aside from the melody that had been looping on the gramophone all night, there was no other sound in the room...

But the pianist was completely lost in the atmosphere of his own fantasy, greedily breathing in the stale air around him as if savoring his spectacular performance.

Not until a knock came from the main doors did he slowly come back to his senses and speak.

"Come in."

A young man dressed as an Attendant entered the ballroom. He glanced at the socialites scattered across the floor, seemingly unfazed by the bizarre scene. He said nothing, simply hurried to the pianist’s side, and handed him a small telegram.

The moment the pianist saw the contents of the telegram, his brow furrowed, and the look of excitement and enjoyment instantly vanished from his face.

"How is this possible? When did this happen?"

"Last night..."

"Who did it?"

"It was likely the Radiant Sect, along with an investigation team called ’Prosperous and Contented.’"

"No, I need more details. A specific person."

"I’m afraid that will require more time to investigate..."

"Damn it! Our god, our Sovereign, hates waiting more than anything!"

The pianist grew anxious. He quickly shoved the Attendant aside, left the ballroom, and headed for the basement, where he hastily prepared a large pile of Divination Tools.

He looked flustered and extremely rushed, as if a few seconds’ delay would lead to disaster.

After some preparation, he ignored all the taboos of Divination and asked directly:

"Who killed the Steward of Radiant City? Who killed the Steward of Radiant City? Who killed the Steward of Radiant City?"

After asking three times in a row, the mirrors and candles before him gave him an answer. After interpreting it, he took out a map and began sketching on it, drawing the killer’s face.

He then folded the paper with the killer’s face on it, placed it in an envelope, and hurried out of the basement. He called for the same Attendant and had him drive him from the suburban manor to the city center of the City of Illusion.

On the way, he kept urging him on.

"Faster! This situation is too serious. I must discuss this with the other Priests."

However, to avoid being seen, the pianist got out of the car two streets early, planning to walk the rest of the way.

But before getting out, he handed the envelope with the killer’s face to the Attendant and gave him an order:

"Find some people and bring this guy from Radiant City to me. I must execute him before the Sovereign to appease the Sovereign’s wrath... Remember! He must be alive!"

With that said, he added one more thing:

"Remember to hire some formidable, ruthless types. Don’t be afraid to spend money."

The Attendant nodded firmly, tucked the envelope securely away, and drove off, parting ways with the pianist.

The pianist, for his part, straightened his clothes and adjusted the top hat on his head, making himself appear emotionally stable and respectable. Then, carrying his Walking Stick, he headed to a Cigar Club two streets away.

In one of the luxuriously decorated private meeting rooms, he saw the other high-ranking members of the ’Following Madness’ Sect.

They were all Priests responsible for worshiping and pleasing the Sovereign. The one leading them, a High Priest, was said to be the closest to the Sovereign in the entire Sect.

But at this moment, all the senior members wore grave expressions, looking restless and frightened.

As soon as the pianist was seated, the lead High Priest dropped an even bigger bombshell:

"The Sovereign... is weary. It may need to slumber for a while and will be unable to answer our prayers."

"Weary? Slumber?"

The pianist’s face was a mask of astonishment, as if he had heard two completely foreign words.

Or perhaps, he was unwilling to believe that the Sovereign could experience such a human-like condition.

"How is that possible?"

"The Sovereign... It... was injured..."

another Priest nearby said in a hushed voice.

"This..."

The pianist instantly felt as if his breathing and heartbeat were about to stop. He sat frozen in his seat, completely petrified.

’How could the Sovereign be injured?’

’How could such a being be injured?’

’It exists on a plane completely beyond human reach. Who could possibly harm It?’

’Unless...’

"A Saint?"

The pianist thought of the only possible answer.

’Only those foolish human Saints could possibly reach the Sovereign.’

Another Priest beside him nodded and replied:

"Yes. And not just one. It’s feared that at least three Saints attacked at the same time."

"Veto? Law? Who else?"
