Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 83: Candidate Index: Zero

  • Next Chapter

At twelve percent removal, Noah fell to one knee. No weapon touched him. No panel declared damage. The line connecting him to Jace simply lost its color.

Noah's collapse forced the title-removal process out of abstraction. Every percentage point detached more than a name from Jace. Free Claim lines lost routing priority. Barrier corrections slowed. One medical conduit shut itself because its authority path no longer resolved. Liam and James compensated manually while Eleanor watched the System damage the very outcome the audit claimed to evaluate.

The delayed removal exposed one more thing: the System could pause when its own evidentiary rules demanded it. Absolute processes became negotiable the instant two pieces of procedure disagreed. Jace filed that away.

Eleanor asked the System to pause removal while medical routes were failing. The request came back denied. She filed it again under preservation of audit evidence rather than humanitarian risk. Approved. The title removal slowed by three seconds.

Jace looked at her.

"Procedure," Eleanor said.

"Useful when it wants to be."

"Useful when somebody learns which words it recognizes."

It was the first lesson she had given him instead of a ruling. Jace stored it beside every other exploit that had started as bureaucracy.

Jace almost told them what to do. The impulse reached his mouth and stopped there. Liam had already rerouted the shield. Madison had already moved the patients. The Safe Zone did not need his panic converted into command. That realization steadied him more than the title did. If Uncrowned Landlord vanished completely, the community still had to remain more than one man's function.

FORCED TITLE REMOVAL

Progress: 12%.

The Uncrowned Landlord: DETACHING.

Connected Free Claim Network: DEGRADED.

Active Free Claims: 14.

Protection continuity: 100% -> 81%.

Noah caught himself against Avery's table.

"Keep going."

Eleanor's hand dropped. The removal did not stop.

AUDITOR ACTION ALREADY COMMITTED.

Reversal requires superior authority.

Available Superior Authority: NONE DETECTED.

Eleanor looked at Noah. That was the problem with her face now. Jace had learned enough of it to notice when the calm was work.

"Your protection relationship should not depend on the title," she said.

Noah pushed himself upright.

"It doesn't."

"The network disagrees."

"The network is wrong."

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Avery was already writing.

"Free Claim predates current title validation event. Consent independent. Revocation rights independent. Maintenance independent."

The official panel answered her.

FREE CLAIM DERIVATION

Primary Claimant: Jace.

Territory Role: Landlord-derived claimant.

Protected Person: Noah Venn.

Relationship interpretation: SUBORDINATE OCCUPANT.

Noah laughed without humor.

"There."

Eleanor looked at him.

"What?"

"That's the lie."

Removal Progress: 27%.

Protection Continuity: 81% -> 68%.

Noah's outline flickered at the shoulders. Avery reached toward him, then stopped before touching.

"Do you need help?"

"Yes."

She offered her arm. He took it. The distinction was tiny. The System recorded neither part. Jace did.

"Noah chose the claim."

"I know," Eleanor said.

"Then why does your system say the title created him?"

"It is not my system."

Jace looked at the white clothes, white panels, white column. Eleanor followed his gaze. A faint flush rose along her cheek.

"I know what that sounds like."

"Good."

Removal Progress: 41%.

Avery shoved the paper ledger toward Eleanor.

"Read his first consent."

"I have."

"Read it again."

The entry was rough, written before Avery had standardized anything.

NOAH VENN

Protection requested.

Ownership refused.

Command refused.

Withdrawal preserved.

Relationship accepted by both parties.

No landlord language.

No tenant language.

No territory requirement.

Eleanor pressed two fingers to the page. The official interpretation changed.

DERIVATION CONFLICT DETECTED.

Title dependency confidence: 72% -> 39%.

Removal Progress slowed.

41% -> 43%.

Eleanor looked at the screen.

"I can challenge the dependency."

"Do it," Jace said.

AUDITOR OBJECTION

Grounds:

Protected relationship contains independent consent origin.

Requested Action:

Detach title without detaching Free Claim network.

Review response:

DENIED.

Reason:

Claimant authority source remains unresolved.

The removal accelerated. 52%. Noah's Free Claim line vanished completely. He sucked in a breath and gripped Avery's arm harder.

FREE CLAIM NETWORK

Status: PAUSED.

Maintenance: PAUSED.

Ownership: NONE.

Protection: ADMINISTRATIVE HOLD ONLY.

Jace tried to sit up. The room leaned sideways.

Health: 5/420.

Corruption Load: 96%.

Spatial Fracture: ACTIVE.

Eleanor moved toward him, then stopped herself.

"Do not use Rule Fracture on the removal."

"Wasn't."

"You were."

"Considering."

"At your current condition, a failed fracture could make the title inseparable."

"From me?"

"From everything connected to you."

Noah spoke through clenched teeth.

"Then don't."

Jace looked at him.

"Still your choice?"

"Especially when it's inconvenient."

Removal Progress: 68%.

The title peeled away from the Territory Claim. Something beneath it did not. Breach Sight changed. The familiar gold-and-white architecture ended. Below it was black. No decoration. No clauses. No noble seal. One line.

BLOODLINE AUTHORITY DETECTED.

Jace's breath caught. Eleanor stepped closer to the panel.

"No."

Removal Progress: 74%.

The black layer expanded.

CURRENT REGISTRY SEARCH

Bloodline: ZERO-PROTOCOL.

Registered House: NONE.

Registered Crownline: NONE.

Extinction Status: CONFIRMED.

Candidate Index: SEARCHING.

Avery read the word.

"Candidate for what?"

Eleanor did not answer. The System searched.

CURRENT NOBLE INDEX: NO MATCH.

ARCHIVED INDEX: NO MATCH.

DELETED INDEX: ACCESS DENIED.

PRE-REGISTRY INDEX: MATCH.

Eleanor's face emptied. Not the controlled neutrality she had arrived with. Something colder. Recognition.

"You knew?" Jace asked.

"No."

Removal Progress: 82%.

The black layer pushed through the white audit field. Eleanor took a step back.

Auditor Authority: SUPERSEDED.

Review Tier: INSUFFICIENT.

She looked at Jace.

"I was told this bloodline was extinct."

Noah was still holding Avery's arm.

"Maybe they misplaced the paperwork."

Eleanor did not laugh.

"They do not misplace extinction records."

The candidate search finished.

CANDIDATE INDEX: ZERO.

Level Break Progress: 5% -> 7%.

Bloodline Resonance: DETECTED.

FORCED TITLE REMOVAL

Progress: 91%.

Removal target has deeper dependency.

Attempting root detachment.

The Spire answered. Every light inside it went black. The fourteen paused Free Claim lines appeared at once, hanging motionless in the dark. Eleanor whispered one word.

"Stop."

The System ignored her.

Removal Progress: 96%.

97%.

98%.

Then the title refused to come out.

[TITLE REMOVAL FAILED]

DEEPER AUTHORITY DETECTED.

PROTOCOL CROWN: LOCKED.

CANDIDATE INDEX: ZERO.
