Landlord in the Arctic
Chapter 735 - 464: Construction Site
Chapter 735: Chapter 464: Construction Site
Jenny’s heart ached as she looked at the two bear cubs curled up in her arms, whining nonstop.
She raised her hand to gently stroke their snow-white fur, now caked with mud, her voice filled with tenderness.
"Don’t cry, don’t cry, babies. Where are Prince and Princess? And why didn’t the Wolf Pack bring you back?"
"AWOO AWOO!" The two cubs looked up with tear-filled eyes, brimming with a sense of injustice. They stretched out their fluffy little paws, clawing wildly at the air as if recounting their pitiful tale.
"Auntie Jenny, the little bears say that Feng drove Prince and Princess away! He drove the Wolf Pack away too! That’s why they’re so miserable. They had nothing to eat, so they were so hungry they had to eat snow. It’s just so sad."
Watching from the side, Liu Lan, who loved a good spectacle and wasn’t afraid to stir up trouble, seized the opportunity to add fuel to the fire.
A cunning glint flashed in her eyes, a slight smirk played on her lips, and she deliberately raised her voice so everyone around could hear.
Of course, her words also carried a hint of revenge against Feng.
She had been a little annoyed ever since yesterday when, after the classroom was finished, Feng had demanded that everyone start attending school.
So now she wanted to use this chance to embarrass Feng.
However, Jenny was too busy worrying about Xiong Da and Xiong Er.
She didn’t have the time to question how Liu Lan could possibly understand the bear cubs.
But when she heard that Feng Mountain had driven away Prince and Princess, she immediately recalled asking about her two "big babies" yesterday, and the flustered look on Feng Mountain’s face at the time.
’So he knew about it all along and didn’t tell me.’
A wave of inexplicable anger surged through Jenny. Her cheeks flushed slightly, and her eyes revealed a flicker of indignant fury.
She immediately pulled out her phone and dialed Feng’s number.
But it rang and rang, and no one picked up.
’He’s avoiding me!’
Jenny gave a frustrated laugh, a smile that was half-amused, half-exasperated. She patted Xiong Da and Xiong Er’s heads. "Come on, let’s go home. I’ll get you something to eat."
The polar night had fallen over the Tundra. The sky was a shroud of black, exuding an endless gloom.
In this silent, vast darkness, the Carnation flew on, a solitary vessel like a bird lost in the night.
Outside the porthole, the Tundra had become a vast, white ocean.
In the dim light, the snow glimmered faintly, a testament to the land’s cold and silence.
Suddenly, a piercing ringtone shattered the silence of the cramped cabin.
Nash instinctively craned his neck to look. The phone’s screen showed the caller’s name: Jenny.
"Khilla!" Nash whispered, keeping his voice down. "Your phone’s ringing."
"Can’t take calls while flying. Safety first."
Feng Mountain reflexively used safety as an excuse to brush him off.
However, Nash, sitting in the back, clearly caught the fleeting, awkward expression on his face in the reflection of the porthole window.
Nash didn’t press the issue.
He simply stared quietly out the window at the white landscape rushing past below,
letting the plane fly on through the night.
....
「An hour slipped by.」
The Carnation arrived in the skies above Sagewang.
The small town, once forgotten by time and overgrown with weeds, was now bustling with new life.
Looking down from the porthole revealed an island of light that had suddenly bloomed in the darkness. Countless floodlights pierced the gloom, illuminating the entire construction site as if it were broad daylight.
Within the white halos of light, snowflakes were tinted gold, dancing madly in the air.
On the Dalton Highway, a ceaseless stream of heavy-duty trucks formed a flowing river of light. The roar of their engines wove together into a powerful symphony.
Fully loaded with excavated permafrost and rock, their wheels crunched over the icy road, kicking up sprays of ice crystals before roaring off into the distance.
Just then, the radio on the plane’s instrument panel beeped, indicating an unknown signal on the public channel.
Feng Mountain reached out and flipped the radio switch.
The next moment, a rough, unfamiliar male voice crackled from the speaker, his tone slightly annoyed as he asked a question.
"Hey buddy, this is a no-fly zone for the Sawu Highway project. You lost?"
"No, I’m from the Crown Territory. I got a call to come check things out," Feng Mountain replied into the radio, wondering why the voice sounded so familiar, though for the life of him he couldn’t recall where he’d met the man.
A moment later, the man’s voice on the radio was filled with surprised excitement, like someone who had just run into a long-lost friend.
"Hey, buddy, are you Feng? This is Sam. Long time no see."
’Sam!’
Feng Mountain paused for a moment,
and then he remembered why the voice was so familiar.
’So it was someone I knew.’
The engineering team manager for the North Slope Petroleum Company—the white guy with the thick beard.
He’d helped build the airstrip at the Crown Territory.
When he left, he’d even generously gifted him a fair amount of small machinery, which had been a huge help.
"Sam, my man, so it’s you!" Feng Mountain’s tone couldn’t help but warm up as well.
"Feng, can’t chat now. This is a public channel. I’m sending you the runway coordinates. See you on the ground."
Sam’s voice grew hurried, as if he were busy with something.
He rattled off the runway coordinates as he spoke.
After receiving the landing coordinates,
the Carnation circled once above Sagewang.
Its frame shuddered slightly in the wind and snow as it adjusted its flight posture.
Two straight lines of guide lights for the runway lit up on the ground below, coming into view.
The lights shone exceptionally bright in the vast, snowy night, guiding his descent.
Feng Mountain guided the plane into a slow descent.
As the plane descended, the view of the ground grew clearer, and the whistling of the wind grew more piercing.
Finally, with a gentle shudder, the Carnation touched down safely on the runway.
Almost as soon as the plane came to a stop, a Pickup Truck, its high beams on, pulled up beside the runway.
The door opened, and a tall man stepped out. He was bundled up in a thick winter suit, his face covered by a mask and goggles.
