Knotting His Rejected Breeder
Chapter 316 - 50: Stealth Mode
Henrik caught up with Dane at the bottom of the stairs, but neither spoke until they were well clear of the main hall. Three Red Keep guards trailed a few paces behind, their boots dropping softly against the cold stone.
Vance’s terms had left no room for negotiation: a signed declaration stripping Destiny of her trade authority, a public apology before the elders, and a master contract placing BloodMoon’s trade routes directly under Silvercrest’s thumb.
Henrik still couldn’t fathom how Dane had simply turned his back and walked away.
When they reached the top floor, a Silvercrest guard unlocked their quarters and stepped aside without a word. Henrik went in first, crossing straight to the window to haul back the heavy velvet curtain.
"Road’s still open," Henrik said. Below, two supply trucks rolled through the courtyard, disappearing toward the western pass beneath the watchful eyes of a newly reinforced Silvercrest detail.
"Not ours," Dane noted, joining him at the glass.
Henrik let the curtain fall.
"No." He paced toward the hearth, the heat doing little to cut his frustration. "He’s serious, Dane. They’re already tightening security around the Redstone approach."
"I know." Dane pulled off his gloves, dropping them onto the heavy oak table.
"And you’re just going to sit here?" Henrik demanded, stopping dead. "We have four hours. Less, if Vance decides to push the timeline."
"Three and a half," Dane corrected calmly, pulling out a chair.
"Do you ever listen to yourself?"
"Consistently." Dane offered a flat glance. "You’re stressing over variables we already anticipated. If Vance locks that pass, our trucks are trapped and we lose the route."
"Then what is the play?" Henrik leaned over the table, pressing his palms into the wood. "Because right now it looks like we’re handing him the key."
"I’m waiting for the moment his leverage turns into a liability," Dane said, pulling one of Vance’s trade ledgers toward him. "He threatened to close the pass to punish us, but his notice didn’t specify BloodMoon. It covers the entire western corridor."
Understanding flickered in Henrik’s eyes.
"The western convoys... if he shuts the road completely, he starves his own allies."
"Exactly. And if he selectively blocks only our trucks, it ceases to be a territorial security measure and becomes an illegal blockade," Dane said, tracing a finger down a column of figures. "Which gives Magistrate Jonathan direct authority to intervene. Send a runner. Inform Jonathan’s office that Vance is threatening a total shutdown of the western pass."
"And if Jonathan tells us to settle our own border disputes?"
"Then we settle it," Dane replied softly. "Directly."
Before Henrik could push further, a sharp knock rattled the door frame. A Silvercrest runner delivered a parchment with a fresh wax seal, placed it on the table, and retreated immediately.
Dane broke the seal, his eyes scanning the brief text before passing it across.
"The Redstone agreement ends at midnight," Henrik read aloud, a grim smile touching his lips. "Pass closes indefinitely. He actually put the blockade in writing."
"That’s mistake number one," Dane said.
By eleven-twenty, the quiet was broken by heavy boots in the corridor. A BloodMoon scout stepped inside, breathing fast.
"Alpha, Silvercrest guards are turning our drivers back at the lower yard. Our men tried to push through, but they’ve drawn steel."
Henrik was on his feet instantly, but Dane raised a hand, stopping their Red Keep escorts from following.
"Stay here. We aren’t bringing armed guards into their lower yard—if Vance wants a riot to justify a crackdown, I’m not giving him one."
Down in the freezing courtyard, a lone BloodMoon transport sat idling near the archway. A dozen Silvercrest guards formed a hard line across the threshold.
The garrison captain stepped forward as Dane approached.
"Orders, Alpha. Nothing leaves until midnight."
"You’ve posted twelve armed men for a single grain truck," Henrik said, eyeing the line. "Seems a bit dramatic for administrative enforcement."
The captain ignored Henrik, keeping his eyes on Dane.
"My orders stand."
"Fine," Dane said without hesitation. "Turn the truck around. Park it inside our bay."
The captain blinked, clearly thrown by the lack of resistance. Henrik opened his mouth to protest, but caught Dane’s warning look. They turned back toward the keep in silence.
"We’re leaving the driver down there?" Henrik muttered under his breath.
"For twenty minutes," Dane replied. "If they try to seize the cargo, they violate the regional accord before midnight. If they don’t, they’ve wasted a dozen guards standing in the cold to enforce an order that expires in a quarter of an hour."
At eleven-forty-five, a second message arrived—this one bearing Magistrate Jonathan’s seal.
Henrik read over Dane’s shoulder. Jonathan wasn’t stopping the midnight closure, but he had issued an emergency summons ordering Silvercrest to present its full, unedited trade ledgers before the Council at dawn.
"He took the bait," Henrik said, the tension finally draining from his shoulders. "Jonathan isn’t stopping tonight’s shutdown, but he’s calling Vance’s entire financial operation into question tomorrow."
"Vance thinks he’s playing a short game of intimidation," Dane said, pulling his gloves back on. "He forgot the Council oversees his tax exemptions."
At midnight, the heavy iron bell in the square chimed once. The deep echo rolled across the stone yard and faded into the dark. Seconds later, their scout reappeared at the door.
"The pass is locked, sir. Western convoys are turned back too. Vance shut the whole line."
Henrik let out a low, disbelief-filled laugh.
"He actually committed to it. That’s going to cripple his quarterly margins by afternoon."
"Yes," Dane agreed, walking to the window. Below, the iron gates sat chained shut, the courtyard completely empty.
"Which means by tomorrow morning, Silvercrest will be begging the Council for a compromise."
Henrik walked up beside him.
"So what do we do until dawn?"
Dane turned from the glass, heading for the door.
"Get the men fed and rested."
Henrik stared at him.
"Rested? The pass is sealed, our supply lines are frozen, and you want to eat?"
"I want everyone ready for a long morning," Dane said, slowing at the top of the stairwell as a faint smile touched his face. "Tomorrow, we find out just how much money Vance is willing to lose to prove a point."
