Chapter 113

A Nightmare

That night, before bed, Song Qilin gently combed his wife’s hair. Her long, silky strands flowed down to her waist. Although this was normally a servant’s task, he was happy to do it himself.

Nie Shuang didn’t object to her husband’s gesture. If he wanted to show his love, it was a good thing. She wasn’t like the traditional women of ancient time who revered their husbands as if they were divine beings. To her, marriage was about sharing happiness and sorrow together, not one person being superior to the other.

As he set the comb down on the table, her glossy black hair shimmered like a waterfall. She turned to him with a sweet smile that made Song Qilin’s heart skip a beat. She wrapped her slender arms around his waist in a tender embrace.

"I don’t want you to leave..."

Hearing the softness in her voice made his heart melt. He didn’t want to leave her and their children either. Every day spent close to them filled him with immense happiness. He hugged her back and whispered into her ear.

"I don’t want to be apart from you either. What if you moved with me to the provincial city? Could you pause the business here for a while...?"

He asked with a hopeful tone. Seeing her remain silent for a long time, he secretly hoped for her response. If she agreed to follow him, he wouldn’t have to endure the painful longing any longer.

"I still have unfinished business here... Give me some more time to handle everything. Perhaps I could move back to the capital first? It’s not too far from the northern border, is it?"

A faint smile appeared on his handsome face. At least she hadn’t outright refused. While Huangjing City was under the trustworthy rule of Kang Wang, it was still quite far. If she moved back to the capital, it would reduce his travel time by more than half.

"Mm...as you wish. Whenever you’re ready. This time, I might not return for six months or even a year. You must take good care of yourself."

He pressed his nose against her hair, and their bodies drew even closer in the embrace.

"Are you still worried about Second Brother? Will you stop by to see him in the capital on your way back?"

Nie Shuang tilted her head up to ask.

"Mm...If he’s unwilling, I’ll find a way to help. Even if he’s willing...I still want to help. I don’t want him to bear this burden."

"You’re doing the right thing. Young Miss Chen may come from a good family, but her personality doesn’t suit Second Brother."

And more importantly, she didn’t get along with Nie Shuang at all. If that woman married into the Hou Manor, the house would surely be in chaos. Nie Shuang had no desire to waste time quarreling with someone like her.

The atmosphere in the room was warm. Song Qilin watched her delicate lips moving as she spoke, and suddenly, he couldn’t suppress the surge of emotion any longer. He leaned down and kissed her with deep affection. In his eyes, no woman could compare to his wife. Nie Shuang was caught off guard, her eyes widening in surprise. He chuckled lowly, his lips still pressed against hers, teasing her by lightly biting her soft lips before slipping his tongue inside to taste her sweetness.

Nie Shuang clung to him tightly, feeling weightless as he lifted her toward the bed. Tonight, Qilin would likely be as passionate as ever. Luckily, she had taken a nap earlier in the afternoon after Kang Wang left, or she might not have been able to keep up.

He took off his clothes, revealing his strong chest and well-toned muscles. His bronze skin glistened under the lantern’s light, casting shadows. Her face flushed when she saw his clear desire.

Seeing her every shy movement, he couldn’t help but smile. No matter how confident a businesswoman Nie Shuang was, she was always shy when alone with him. He gently loosened her robe, exposing her soft, ample chest. She instinctively turned her body to the side, her pale skin turning a soft pink with embarrassment. Her eyes lowered, avoiding his sharp gaze, her long lashes beautifully framing her delicate face.

He touched her tender skin with fascination, his rough hands gliding over her softness. His lips trailed kisses that sent shivers down her spine, and their bodies entwined closely. The room was filled only with the sound of their heavy breathing and soft moans of pleasure.

It seemed Song Qilin wasn’t going to stop easily. Nie Shuang felt the slick warmth between her thighs and sensed his desire rising again. She held him tightly, wanting to savor their last moments together before he had to leave. But then they heard the cry. Usually, the children were fast asleep by now, so why were they so fussy tonight? And their wailing was much louder than usual.

The couple exchanged knowing smiles, then rose to get dressed without a word. Song Qilin helped his wife into her clothes first, then put on his own, tying his robe loosely around his waist in an untidy way that, surprisingly, still made him look handsome.

Hand in hand, he took his wife, wearing a coat, to the children’s room. Just as they suspected, all three kids were awake and crying, their faces a mess of tears and runny noses. The source of the crying seemed to be Bao Bao. The wet nurse reported that Bao Bao might have had a nightmare, waking up in tears and startling his siblings awake, which only made the others cry too. Nie Shuang picked him up and softly comforted him.

“Why are you crying, Bao Bao?”

Unable to speak, Bao Bao buried his face in her shoulder, sobbing, while glancing over at his father. But Song Qilin didn’t catch his son’s gaze, as he was busy picking up Xiao Hua Hua and Bei Bei from the wet nurses.

“Do you miss your father?”

Nie Shuang whispered gently into Bao Bao’s ear, so only they could hear. Bao Bao wiped his tears with his chubby hand, though it was unclear if he understood her words. Perhaps he sensed his father was leaving soon, and that’s why he had the nightmare.

“Let’s bring them to bed with us tonight,”

She suggested to her husband. He nodded in agreement. Whatever Shuang Shuang suggested was always the best idea in his mind. Fortunately, the bed in their main room was large enough to comfortably fit all five of them. Once the children saw their parents, they stopped crying. When they were placed on the bed, surrounded by the comforting scent of their mother, they seemed overjoyed. Nie Shuang couldn’t help but laugh at their cheerful excitement. The couple exchanged amused glances and chuckled. While their intimate moment might have been interrupted, they were happy to spend time with their little ones instead.

The children didn’t want to sleep right away. They weren’t used to sleeping in their parents’ room, so they played around for a while. Eventually, Bei Bei was the first to drift off, followed by Xiao Hua Hua. However, Bao Bao refused to sleep, as if he was afraid that if he fell asleep, he wouldn’t see his parents. In the end, Song Qilin had to carry him and rock him to sleep. Even as he fell asleep, Da Ge held tightly onto his father’s neck. The three little dumplings lay snuggled together: Bei Bei, Xiao Hua Hua, and Da Ge. Song Qilin brought a warm cloth to gently wipe down his wife, then led her to bed. He held her close in his arms, feeling the warmth and softness of her body, longing to be even closer to her many more times. Though still tormented by desire, he was content. Throughout the night, the three little ones tossed and turned, leaving their parents nearly falling off the edge of the bed.
