Chapter 216 - 150: A Sisterhood Broken by a Slap
Chapter 216: Chapter 150: A Sisterhood Broken by a Slap
But she never expected another accident like this to happen.
She stared at the messages on her phone.
Little Carrot, whose eyes had been welling with tears, gave a bleak smile.
’For this, she only hated Yan Li, and that sister of hers who became a star overnight!’
’Xiao Ran and I are really just victims in all this.’
’Especially Xiao Ran. I heard around the company that he got nothing in his divorce. He’s a pitiable person, too.’
Little Carrot: We’re all just tragic figures, really. We think we can succeed if we just work hard, but in the end, we’re nothing more than toys in someone else’s hands.
ItsXici: See? We’re fellow sufferers in this mess. Want to grab a drink together?
’The most urgent task right now is to stabilize her emotions and keep her from doing anything extreme.’
Seeing the message from Xiao Ran, Little Carrot gave a helpless smile.
Little Carrot: Drink? What’s the point? I’m not interested. I have nothing left.
ItsXici: Who says? Why don’t we meet up and talk in person?
It was no exaggeration to say that Xiao Ran could feel his palms sweating.
’The more they chatted, the more he felt like she might be planning to kill herself.’
’To be honest, this did have something to do with him.’
He clung to the principle that saving a life was the highest virtue.
No matter what, he couldn’t let her take her own life today.
Seeing the grim expression on Xiao Ran’s face as he held his phone, a nervous Yan Xici, who was beside him, asked, "How is it?"
’To be honest, she was also worried something terrible would happen to the girl.’
She was so nervous that a fine layer of sweat had already beaded on her forehead.
Xiao Ran’s tone was grave. "It’s no use. She doesn’t want to meet. I’m worried she might..."
He trailed off, afraid of scaring Yan Xici.
’She was timid, after all.’
’Forget her—this was the first time he’d ever encountered a situation like this himself.’
Seeing his expression, the girl understood. She sucked in a sharp breath and said uneasily, "I... I was thinking the same thing..."
Their eyes met, both pairs filled with tension.
The girl wracked her brain for a solution. After a moment, her eyes lit up. "What if... what if I call Sister Wang Meng and tell her what’s going on?"
"Okay!" Xiao Ran nodded.
It was the only thing they could do for now.
Meanwhile, Wang Meng had already arrived at Little Carrot’s front door, but no matter how much she knocked, no one answered.
The apartment was pitch-black inside, making her suspect that no one was even home.
Just as she was at her wit’s end, her phone rang. She picked it up, saw it was Yan Xici, and answered. "Hello, Xici."
"Sister Wang Meng, you know what’s happening with Little Carrot?"
"I know! I’m at her door right now, but she won’t open it. I’m worried sick."
After she spoke, Wang Meng wiped the sweat from her forehead.
Although the night air was cool, Wang Meng was so anxious that she felt feverish, her whole body drenched in sweat as if she’d been doused with water.
Hearing this, Yan Xici glanced at Xiao Ran. Seeing him nod, she spoke into the phone again, "In that case, send us the address."
Wang Meng froze. ’What do they want the address for?’
However, working on the principle that she could no longer handle this alone, she immediately changed her tune. "Okay, okay, good."
’The situation is urgent, and there’s no time for second-guessing. Solving the problem is what matters most!’
With that, she hastily forwarded the address to Yan Xici.
Once they had the address, the two of them rushed out the door. They didn’t even bother with their e-scooter, instead hailing a taxi and speeding toward Little Carrot’s home.
...
Ten minutes later, Yan Li’s Panamera pulled up to the entrance of an old, run-down residential complex.
She scrambled out of the car and ran toward the address Wang Meng had given her.
It was an old, decrepit building with no elevator. She had to take the stairs, climbing all the way to the sixth floor in one breath.
As soon as she rounded the corner, she saw Wang Meng’s anxious face.
Yan Li was slightly out of breath. "What’s the situation?"
"She’s not opening the door. Maybe she’s not even in there." Wang Meng looked grim.
Without another word, Yan Li strode forward and began pounding on the door.
"It’s Yan Li! I know you’re in there! Delete the video right now! It’ll be better for everyone!" she yelled.
Little Carrot, sitting on the floor beneath the window, let out a cold laugh.
’What’s she yelling so loud for?’
"Keep your voice down. Don’t disturb my neighbors."
Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was clear enough for those outside to hear.
"Calm down. I was in the wrong today, I admit it. But I was in a tough spot. The company has so many employees, and you gave me attitude in front of all of them. If I hadn’t responded that way, wouldn’t everyone start doing the same in the future?"
"How would I be able to manage the company?"
Helplessness filled Yan Li’s eyes.
’Although she had acted partly out of spite, it was the only thing she felt she could do at the time.’
’She was the boss; she had to consider the big picture.’
"Then what about what you said about me and the director? What did you mean by that? Is it fun to rub salt in other people’s wounds?"
Agitated, she rose from the floor. She was gripping her phone so tightly that her knuckles were white, the bones clearly visible.
’That was the most humiliating, most sordid thing that had ever happened to her in her life!’
’The secret she had so carefully guarded was brutally ripped open by her, skin and all.’
’And now she had the gall to show up and play the innocent victim?’
"You... you need to calm down. Whatever you want, we can talk about it." Yan Li forced herself to take a deep breath. "It’s just about compensation, isn’t it? Delete the video now, and I can give you five hundred thousand as a settlement. How does that sound?"
’Yan Li knew the rules of the business world all too well. When someone talked about being hurt, it was just a prelude to demanding compensation.’
"Compensation? My reputation—can you afford to pay for that?"
