Chapter 171: Chapter 138: The Two Sisters Finally Clash Head-On
Xiao Ran smiled as he followed behind her. "Why are you walking so fast?"
....
「Yunya Company, Yan Li’s office.」
Wang Meng stood nervously before Yan Li’s desk, manuscript in hand. She watched her boss, who had just finished reading it.
"President Yan, if this draft is okay, I’ll go find the people we need."
Yan Li looked up at her. "Alright, you can head back now. Good work."
Wang Meng didn’t dare accept the praise. "It’s my job," she said quickly.
Yan Li said nothing else, simply giving a dismissive wave.
"I’ll take my leave then, President Yan." With that, Wang Meng turned and left Yan Li’s office.
Yan Li ignored the manuscript on her desk. Instead, she picked up her phone and called her mother.
Having calmed down, she found she didn’t have the heart to be so ruthless, after all.
’She couldn’t be completely heartless. Yan Xici was her sister, after all.’
She wanted to ask her mom if she had even tried to talk Yan Xici out of it.
Or maybe she just wanted to hear her say, "Lili, don’t worry. I’m trying to talk some sense into your sister."
If she did, then Yan Li could afford to wait a little longer.
Wait for Yan Xici to have a change of heart.
Mrs. Yan was already in bed but couldn’t fall asleep. Her two daughters were at odds, and it weighed heavily on her mind.
Hearing the phone ring, she quickly picked it up and muted it, afraid of waking the old man beside her.
When he didn’t stir, she got up, slipped on her slippers, and walked out onto the balcony.
"Hello, Lili."
"Mom."
Mrs. Yan knew her eldest daughter was calling at this hour because the two had spoken. She asked, "What did you two talk about? Did your sister back down at all?"
In an instant, it felt as if everything became clear to Yan Li.
’So Mom hadn’t even tried to talk her out of it.’
’Otherwise, why would she have asked that?’
But, unwilling to give up, she wanted to be absolutely sure. Using the hand propped on her desk, she tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
"Mom, so... what did you say to Xici?"
On the other end of the line, Mrs. Yan sounded troubled. She sighed and, after a long pause, said with difficulty, "Lili, it’s not that Mom won’t help you, but Xici is my child too. I can’t just ruin her future for the sake of yours, can I? She loves doing this..."
’See? Just as I’d guessed!’
’Mom didn’t just fail to persuade her, she was actually supporting Yan Xici.’
An indescribable disappointment filled Yan Li’s eyes. She retorted, "Then what about me? If that’s what she loves, there are plenty of other ways to do it. Why does she have to drag Xiao Ran into it?"
’All these years of hard work to get the company where it is today... If my scandalous past gets exposed now, what am I supposed to do?’
’It was bad enough that Yan Xici and Xiao Ran were doing this to me, but why wouldn’t my own mother take my side and consider my feelings for once?’
Mrs. Yan sighed.
’What else could it be? It’s just because she likes him. It’s love!’
’When love is involved, who can think clearly!’
’Yan Xici is only twenty. It’s an age where you get easily swept up in your feelings.’
But she couldn’t bring herself to say that out loud. The truth hurts, after all.
She could only try to gently persuade her. "She... oh, I’m not really sure either, dear. Maybe it’s because Xiao Ran is helping her, or maybe they get more traffic together. I’m sure they aren’t deliberately trying to make things difficult for you."
At those words, Yan Li let out a cold laugh on the other end of the line.
She lightly bit her lip, her gaze drifting out the window, an unspeakable disappointment in her eyes.
’From the very beginning, it’s felt like Mom has always been protecting Yan Xici.’
’She’s younger, she doesn’t want to give up... so does that mean I, the older sister, have to be the one to back down?’
’Why should I?’
’Just because I’m older?’
