Chapter 989: Various Kinds of Jobs
There are many kinds of jobs in the Demon King’s Kingdom.
For example, laundry.
It is essential for a clean life, but there are people who are bad at laundry, people who cannot do it, and people who simply do not want to.
For such people, there is work where others do the laundry in their place.
This is not a job handled by a company, but rather a kind of home-based side work done by ordinary households.
Laundry is packed into bags, and payment is made per bag.
Of course, laundry skill differs from household to household, so those who are good at it receive many requests.

The same applies to sewing.
This is also essential for daily life, but not everyone can do sewing work.
Full-scale sewing, such as making clothes from fabric, is handled by tailors or seamstresses who specialize in clothing and textiles. However, simple repairs like fixing small tears can be taken on as home-based side work by ordinary households.
Payment varies depending on skill, and the rate at which repeat customers return also changes, so it is not uncommon for households to train their sewing skills whenever they have free time.
Just to be clear, most housewives in the Demon King’s Kingdom can make clothes from fabric.
If they cannot, it is less that they cannot marry and more that they are often judged as unskilled and not granted permission to marry.
Because of this, it seems to be a skill that young demoness almost certainly have, or at least want to have.
As a result, tailors and seamstresses are expected to possess outstanding skills or unique qualities that are far beyond what ordinary housewives can manage.
It seems to be quite a harsh line of work.

Chimney sweeping.
This is a job where one visits houses with chimneys and offers to clean them.
It feels a bit like aggressive sales, but the fee is very cheap.
There is a reason for this low price. The chimney sweeper receives the soot and ash produced during the cleaning.
Soot and ash surprisingly have many uses, and there are businesses that buy them, which makes this work viable.
That might make one wonder if payment is unnecessary at all, but if no fee were charged, sweepers would end up repeatedly cleaning very clean chimneys that produce little soot or ash.
This chimney sweeping job involves working in narrow spaces, so it is considered work for small-bodied races.
However, even among small-bodied races, beastkin tend to avoid this job.
That is because soot and ash cling to their fur.

There is a similar job, sewer cleaning.
This is work where the organization that manages the sewers offers wages and gathers people to do it.
In the Demon King’s Kingdom, many places use slimes for sewer cleaning, but it seems that checks by people eyes are still necessary.
Apparently, in the past there were mages who built hidden rooms in the sewers to conduct dangerous experiments, and cases where criminal organizations used them as bases.
Few people want to go near sewers, so they must be good places to hide.
When slimes are used, they are cleaner than most places, though.
Slimes are a big help.

Carrying loads, or porters.
This job comes in various scales, but as the name suggests, it involves accompanying a client and carrying their luggage.
It is not delivery or shipping, so porters do not carry loads on their own.
There is always the client, or someone appointed by the client, accompanying them.
This is to confirm the recipient and to prevent the luggage from being stolen.
Anyone with the strength to carry loads can do the job, but because of that, a certain level of trust is required.
Also, when accompanying adventurers as a porter, the job involves collecting and transporting items obtained during an adventure, so the ability to not hold the adventurers back is required.
I used to think this kind of work would be done by people weaker than adventurers, but it seems that unless you are as strong as, or stronger than, adventurers, you will not be hired.

Guides.
This is work where one guides visitors from outside around a town.
It cannot be done unless you are very familiar with the town, and you must constantly gather information on good places to eat and well-regarded inns to make a living.
In addition, if your communication skills are poor, you will not get clients.
Appearance is also important.
If you do not look serious, clients will avoid you.
Looking serious does not mean you are absolutely safe, though.
It is not something you hear about in Village Five, but in other places there are people who guide visitors to suspicious inns and commit theft together with the inn.
Because of this, in Village Five, guides are officially certified, and trustworthy guides are clearly indicated.
This is done so visitors do not run into trouble.
Because of this certification system, the hurdle for new entrants in Village Five has become a little higher, which is seen as a bit of a problem.
As a countermeasure, village council members in Village Five gather people and train them so newcomers can obtain certification.

Now then.
Why did I bring up all this talk about work?
Laundry, sewing, chimney sweeping, carrying loads, and guiding are all jobs done by individuals, but there are people who oversee them.
When some kind of trouble arises on either the shop side or the customer side, there needs to be a place to run to.
They also act as mediators when disputes over territory arise.
Well, it seems that such overseers do not become so by asserting themselves. Rather, people with trust and proven skill are recommended into the role.
I do not know the details.
One of the civil servant girls, Lalabel, told me this.
That is why the conversation turned to business.
And why did Lalabel tell me this?
Because Lalabel oversees those overseers.
I thought that would be Youko’s job, but while she works in coordination with Youko, it is better to keep this as a separate line.
Why?
For crime prevention in Village Five.
Laundry, sewing, chimney sweeping, carrying loads, and guiding are jobs closely tied to everyday life.
Because of that, it is easy for them to notice suspicious individuals.
Of course, even if they find someone suspicious, they do not capture them.
They have no such authority.
They only report it.
And those reports ultimately gather with Lalabel.
If Lalabel judges that a suspicious person poses a threat to Village Five, she notifies the security force.
Using the authority of the security force, they make the arrest.
It might seem that this does not require being separate from Youko’s line, but apparently it is safer to have multiple sets of eyes looking for suspicious individuals.
In fact, Youko’s side also has two sets of eyes, those under Youko’s jurisdiction and those under Nana the spy.
Together with Lalabel’s jurisdiction, that makes three.
It is quite thorough.
「Village chief. There is one more.」
There is?
「Yes.」
Lalabel glanced toward the ceiling beam inside the room, where the spiderlings were perched.
I see.
That makes four sets of eyes watching for suspicious individuals.
I’m rest assured.
「Yes. We will continue to do our best.」
In response to Lalabel’s words, the spiderlings also raised their legs and saluted.

One of the civil servant girls, Lalabel.
Her full name is Lalabelralu Labelra.
For some reason, she seems to be very good at gathering and handling this kind of information.
Even though the civil servant girls are daughters of nobles.

AN: Lalabel appears in the V14 of the LN.
This is the first time her name has appeared here on SHMTranslations.
Sorry for the late update.
I look forward to your support again this year.
TN: V14 is during the parade where Swan showed up. The magic carpet and the gatling water gun at the hot spring area was also part of that volume.
