Chapter 1058 Into the poisonous mist
[Eon’s POV: ]
“How is it that the two of us are together and the rest of them are separate?” Rein was wondering why this was happening like this.
Only the two of us were separated from the group from what Celes could tell and it was pretty weird.
The rest of the group was together, and this was going to cause quite the suspicions all around the place.
Still, it might not really be that big a deal because of the environment that we are in right now.
{ “Because, ptssss… you’re different.” } Apparently, we could still hear the white snake’s voice even though it wasn’t visible anymore.
When that person, the Origin skill user that was wearing the full armour got away from my passive detection and opened the gate, we were all thrown into this special place.
The entire place, though not too dark, did not have any lights like it did in the previous sections of the dungeon.
There was also poisonous fog present all around us.
The poison was potent. It was strong enough to affect the normal (Red) rank creatures as well as young children in an instant.
It was in fact strong enough to make any normal person faint.
It wasn’t deadly poison that would kill you. But despite its simple anaesthetic effects, it could be poetent to someone who did not take any precaution against it.
And, it was present everywhere around us. It was part of the atmosphere of this place, and depending on what region you are in, the potency of the poison increased even more.
‘The poison was stronger in this part than it was in the part where the rest of our party was thrown in, and yet we know for sure they were having a difficult time because of it.’
The younger ones, our employers, were barely getting by with the help of the artifacts that protected them, but they were not fine anymore.
The full armoured knight was not around them anymore, at least, they could not perceive him anymore.
‘Perhaps one of the branched skills of his Origin skill had some kind of presence erasing effect or something. It was possible.’
But since none of us really knew what his skills did, we did not know what kind of powers he actually had.
But still, he was still with them while the rest of them were going around being careful of their surroundings.
‘And we, on the other hand, were somewhere else.’
When we regained our consciousness, we found ourselves in this distant location that did not have any lights like the place the rest of our party was.
This place also did not have any snake head ends so, no light-orb-eyes either.
A distant dark corner of the dungeon that was not yet explored, or was never supposed to be explored by someone. This was that kind of place.
And, as Rein asked earlier, I was even curious why we were in such a place.
Thankfully…
{ “You two are, ptssss… successors.” }
The white snake that we could only hear the voice of, was looking after us… or perhaps, it was observing us right now.
{ “You already have a legacy, ptssss… to succeed. You have not even realised, ptssss… what you hold so, you aren’t, ptsss… ready to have another one. Besides, ptssss… a successor of a Rebirthing bird of fire… or a Hound of shadow world might not, be the best fit for this particular legacy.” }
It was saying some weird things right now.
First of all, I think what he was calling a ‘legacy’ was in fact something related to my master’s stigma and Rein’s eyes.
‘It was a fragment of a divinity, so it didn’t seem like it knew anything about Lucy. at least, it did not mention anything about a skill…’
Lucy was what Master left for me. Her prized masterpiece and her best creation as well as a being that I know for a fact is more unique than a pinnacle skill that might also just fall into the category of the legacy skills.
Also, the snake was aware that we weren’t like the rest of them. It knew we were different, possessed powers that we weren’t aware of as well as how we were connected to a ‘phoenix’ and a ‘primordial’ being.
{ “Well, as a guardian fragment, I cannot really be the judge of who is the worthy one, so, it is my simple duty to test those who do challenge the legacy.” }
We were walking down a narrow path right now, filled with poisonous fog of different intensity.
Though most poisons did not affect us due to our high resistance, we surely weren’t immune to poison.
So, from the way the lethalness kept increasing, I doubted whether we would make it to the end of this path without having to use other means.
Still, that much was not something we needed to worry about right now.
‘Something was going to be present at the end of this path.’
The snake just now said that it was a guardian. And if it was a guardian of a legacy, whatever it might be, there is a good chance we will eventually have to fight it if we want to get whatever it was guarding.
Though, since it also said that we aren’t aware of our own powers and all that, it also isn’t trying to test us itself right now.
As someone who was in charge of testing those who wanted the legacy, it was simply testing us, and if we fail on an appropriate turn, I think we will either get to leave this place, or we may end up without a few limbs.
Still, I have no idea what is going to happen to us.
“What exactly do you mean by legacy anyway? And why did you say this place has the ‘fifth’ legacy earlier? Why do these legacies have numbers?”
For now, we did not know much about this place and this situation. Which meant we needed as much information as we could.
{ “I am not allowed to tell that to anyone. At least, ptssss… not someone that has not proven their worth.” }
The way he said it almost seemed like he was looking down on us. But, perhaps that was not the case… its voice just had this strange hiss that made it seem like whatever it was saying, was being said with a negative tone.
{ “You have, ptsss… a lot to learn about, this world.” }
He was a weird one.
{ “Perhaps, your experience in this place, ptsss… will help you with your future, ptsssssss… experiences. Though, ptssss… I’ll answer your previous question, ptsss… and tell you that, ptsss… the legacy that WE guard, and the legacy that you have, ptsss… are not related.” }
It said that we already had a legacy to succeed earlier so I thought it knew something about my master. Your journey continues with empire
Perhaps, from the way it knew about my relation to a phoenix, I thought it might have some knowledge about master that I did not.
‘However, from what it said just now, it makes sense that no Vision from my master has been unlocked to Lucy.’
Every time I come across something or someone related to her or her past that she wanted me to know about, I get this vision of her in a plain white room or in some other place with her explaining to me who they were or how they were connected to her.
Sometimes, I even get information about things that no one knows about anymore.
In the visions that I’ve been receiving since parting ways with her, I am always learning something new… seeing her again is painful, but still, seeing those messages that she left for me… for us, makes me happy.
‘But nothing like that happened this time.’
Even though I doubted this dungeon from a civilization of over five thousand years ago would have any connection to someone who was primarily active as a ruler in the mainland at that time, his clarification confirmed it for us.
{ “This body has limitations, so it is not possible for me to know what level of Authorities your Legacies have.
However, testing that will simply make things much easier.” }
The poison fog around us suddenly increased and intensified. The way the poison density increased abruptly caught us off guard… though, since a protective spell on our clothes was triggered on time, the fog was thrown away.
Then, the road before us vanished.
{ “A child of the bird of rebirth and a Successor of shadows.” }
The room that we ended up in ultimately, was three times the large rooms we have been to until now.
It was a vast place, almost like the inside of an empty volcano.
It was practically a completely different world. And that wasn’t even the worst thing about this.
{ “You will be rewarded appropriately. So…” }
Before us right now, stood more than a few dozen large snakes.
Serpents, vipers, large snakes, small snakes possessing unbelievable poison. It wasn’t just snakes that filled this place.
[{ “Oho? So it was in fact true…” }]
There was a Naga warrior among these many creatures as well. A warrior of a species that was half humanoid and half snake.
A being that possessed near unrivalled strength, immunity to poison, and a near extinct kind that you don’t see above the surface anymore.
{ “Show me what you can do, mythical successors of [{(Original)}] legacies.” }
Most of the snakes here were of (Indigo) rank, but there were three that were of (Purple) rank.
And, if we include the Naga warrior, I don’t think we will be able to defeat this bunch in the few hours that we have left.
‘And that’s not even the scary part…’
My eyes were warning me not to fight that Naga. And, from the horrified look that Rein had, it seems like she is facing something worse than me.
‘I’ve not seen her so scared in a long time.’
Seeing her like that… almost makes me scared as well.
