Invincible through Touching Corpses
Chapter 644 - 614: Accepting the Mission
Having selected a mission, Lin Xinghai didn’t wait. He immediately stood up and led his group toward the mission assignment window.
His action instantly drew everyone’s attention, and all eyes turned to Lin Xinghai’s group.
Everyone was quite curious to see what kind of mission Lin Xinghai would ultimately choose.
Of course, some people there were more than just curious. For instance, the teams from Capital University and Modu University, tasked with intercepting missions, had already braced themselves to try and snatch it away.
After all, most people’s impression of Lin Xinghai was limited to the scene of his fight with Cui Ming.
After some interested parties got their hands on the combat footage from that battle, they conducted a detailed analysis of Lin Xinghai.
Although Lin Xinghai’s Speed was terrifyingly fast, it had taken him three kicks to knock Cui Ming off the stage.
They deduced that Lin Xinghai’s Attack Power was only equivalent to the Body Shaping Realm Late Stage, and his Defense Power and other attributes probably weren’t much better.
With that in mind, they could devise specific tactics. Even if they couldn’t win, they could use a war of attrition to tie down Lin Xinghai and keep him from easily accepting the mission.
If he was sufficiently worn down, someone further back in the rotation might even be able to defeat Lin Xinghai and claim the mission.
"Hello, I’d like to accept mission 3-C358," Lin Xinghai said as he reached the window, directly stating the mission number.
The female second lieutenant at the window, Huang Nuomeng, had already focused her attention on Lin Xinghai the moment he started walking over.
After all, compared to ordinary teams, a powerful team capable of undertaking a Third Level Task was undoubtedly more welcome in the eyes of the military.
Every posted mission, after all, represented a new problem that needed to be resolved in a timely manner.
The higher the mission’s Level, the more difficult it was, and the harder it became to find someone to handle it.
If the missions couldn’t be assigned here, they would ultimately have to be handed over to the Military Department.
Therefore, soldiers like Huang Nuomeng, who were responsible for mission assignments, aimed to get as many tasks as possible into the students’ hands, especially the high-Level ones.
When she heard Lin Xinghai state a mission number starting with a "3," the smile on Huang Nuomeng’s face instantly grew, as it was clearly a Third Level Task.
However, when she followed the number to locate the mission Lin Xinghai was accepting, a look of surprise appeared on her face.
Huang Nuomeng couldn’t help but ask for confirmation, "Student Lin, are you sure you want to accept culling mission 3-C358?"
"Yes, that’s right. Is there a problem?" Lin Xinghai asked.
"N-no, not at all! I was just confirming," Huang Nuomeng said hurriedly. "Alright, the mission has been preliminarily accepted. If no one else comes to challenge for it within 30 seconds, you’ll gain final ownership."
She was well aware that this type of time-consuming, laborious culling mission was one of the most unpopular, only marginally better than the long-term garrison defense missions.
As a result, this type of mission often went unclaimed, sometimes right up until its posting expired.
But the 56th Mechanized Infantry Division, responsible for this area, was currently stretched thin and simply couldn’t spare the personnel on short notice.
This made it a high-priority mission for her. In fact, when it was first posted, she had even used her authority to slightly increase the final reward.
Even so, Huang Nuomeng didn’t believe anyone would actually come to accept this mission.
She had even been prepared to raise the mission’s reward to the absolute limit of her authority to see if she could entice any teams to take it.
But she never expected that someone would come to snatch it up the moment it was posted.
That was why she had subconsciously assumed Lin Xinghai had stated the wrong mission number. Now that he had confirmed it, she eagerly pushed the approval through.
Once Lin Xinghai confirmed the mission, the other students saw the Third Level Task vanish from the large screen and immediately realized which one he had taken.
However, as everyone recalled the mission’s details, the students from East Sea Academy and the other two universities alike were all momentarily stunned.
It was completely beyond anyone’s expectations.
Even the few teams that had been planning to challenge him for the mission became suspicious and hesitant.
If they won this kind of mission, not only would it be of no benefit, but it would also slow down their progress in earning Points.
Some even began to suspect it was a plot. ’Did Lin Xinghai deliberately choose a mission like this just to bait us into challenging him for it?’
If he then deliberately threw the match, they would have to bite the bullet and complete the grueling task themselves.
Amidst this hesitation, 30 seconds passed in the blink of an eye.
With no one challenging him for it, the mission smoothly fell into Lin Xinghai’s hands.
"Congratulations on accepting the mission," Huang Nuomeng said. "Since this task requires clearing out a large number of Mutated Zombies and Abyssal Creatures, the military is offering some compensation. You will receive a credit of 100,000 Huaxia Coins for ammunition and equipment purchases."
In truth, this bonus wasn’t part of the original package. But since Lin Xinghai had solved a major headache for her, she had temporarily added the benefit, acting within her authority.
Hearing this, Lin Xinghai raised an eyebrow. While 100,000 Huaxia Coins wasn’t a huge sum for the Xinghai Squad anymore—it was only equivalent to 10,000 Points—it wasn’t something to be scoffed at either.
Before he could speak, Huang Nuomeng continued, "Additionally, any mission entering the green Poisonous Fog District carries the risk of encountering a Fourth Level Mutated Zombie, a creature on par with the Divine Demon Realm. So, remember to head to the armory and pick up a free Cloud Burst Bomb."
"It’s a trump card to save your lives in case you run into a Fourth Level Mutated Zombie. It’s also one of the very few infantry weapons capable of dealing significant damage to one. I wish you a successful mission."
Since this was his first time accepting a Third Level Task, Lin Xinghai hadn’t expected such perks. This made him feel even more relieved.
’But it’s not that surprising when you think about it,’ he mused. ’After all, we’re the nation’s future elites. Losing even one of us would be a considerable blow.’
’Under these circumstances, since the military assigned such a dangerous mission, it’s only natural they’d provide some life-saving equipment.’
"Alright, I’ll take you up on that good luck," Lin Xinghai said with a smiling nod. After receiving the detailed file, he didn’t linger and walked straight out.
Only then did the surrounding crowd erupt into discussion, with some failing to understand why Lin Xinghai would accept such a mission.
Only Xiang Tianhua, who was also waiting to accept a mission, wore a thoughtful expression. He still remembered his earlier conversation with Lin Xinghai.
Lin Xinghai possessed an absolute advantage in Speed. He had a massive edge when dealing with Mutated Zombies weaker than himself. Xiang Tianhua had even suggested that Lin Xinghai take on this type of culling mission.
He just hadn’t expected Lin Xinghai to choose one that was so difficult.
"I hope you really know what you’re doing," Xiang Tianhua murmured to himself. Then, he too stood up and walked toward the mission assignment counter.
