Investing in the Reborn Empress, Rewarded With 10x Returns
Chapter 109: Unclaimed Fate Returns
Barely a minute after their heated encounter finally ended, Theo stumbled out to the courtyard well to drench his burning body in ice-cold water.
The icy shock helped suppress the erratic, searing heat in his meridians.
Once his core temperature stabilized, Theo sat on the edge of the well and opened the system interface to check his pending notifications.
[You have two unclaimed Fate Returns.]
[Return 1 (Archon Zelia): Shadow-Weave Array Seal.]
Theo caught the small token as it materialized in the air.
He examined the intricate runes carved into its surface. It was a supreme-grade array seal designed to perfectly camouflage any divine intent.
It was incredibly valuable, capable of hiding an entire sect from imperial scrying!
"I suppose I should thank her for the assassination attempt," Theo muttered, pocketing the seal.
He moved to the next notification.
[Return 2 (Liana): The First Scroll of Stoic Meditation.]
A scroll dropped into his hands. Theo raised an eyebrow. Liana usually returned rare swords, high-grade ores, or combat manuals.
Coincidentally, Theo was currently suffering from a severe lack of mental discipline.
He unrolled the scroll under the moonlight and began to read the incantations.
He tried to focus on the principles of emptiness, detachment, and emotional clarity.
Instead, the silk of the scroll immediately reminded him of the midnight-silk swimwear.
His mind drifted back to the shadowy office and the unprecedented warmth of Liana’s skin beneath his hands.
"Focus," Theo scolded himself, snapping the scroll shut.
He slapped his cheeks loudly to dispel the distracting imagery.
He concluded that he possessed zero affinity for monastic meditation in this lifetime.
*Slap!*
The sharp noise echoed through the quiet courtyard.
A shutter on the second floor banged open. Silas the Mad Blade stuck his head out, his hair a disheveled mess.
"Sovereign, I was trying to sleep," Silas complained, rubbing his eyes. "Why are you awake at this hour?"
"I am usually dual cultivating at this time," Theo replied honestly.
Silas’s expression froze.
The assassin stared at his employer, a profound, bitter resentment welling up in his chest.
Silas was currently sleeping on a cot in the cellar, indentured to a teenager who openly bragged about spending his nights with the Aurora Sword Empress!
"Then why are you in the courtyard?" Silas asked through gritted teeth.
"I experienced a spike in core temperature," Theo deflected. "I needed to cool down."
Silas did not press the issue. He assumed they had engaged in a sparring match that got out of hand.
"Since you are awake, Sovereign, care to review my latest project?" Silas asked, leaning on the windowsill. "I have been refining the flipbook concept you introduced to me."
Theo looked up, genuinely curious. "You have been drawing?"
"It is a stress-relief hobby," Silas said defensively.
He tossed a sketchbook down into the courtyard.
Theo caught it and opened the cover. The pages were filled with incredibly detailed sketches of scantily clad, alluring courtesans.
"Be honest," Silas smirked from the window. "What do you think?"
"Passable," Theo said bluntly.
"Passable?" Silas looked offended. "Look at page four!"
Theo flipped the page. "Average."
"Page seven!"
"Mediocre."
Silas stared at Theo in disbelief.
The young sovereign’s eyes were entirely clear, displaying zero feigned indifference.
He genuinely felt nothing while looking at the masterful sketches...
Theo could not help it.
His aesthetic standards had been ruined. After witnessing Liana in the midnight-silk swimwear, ink on paper held entirely no appeal.
"Fine," Silas grumbled. "Watch this."
Silas channeled a thread of Syndicate shadow-qi from his fingertip, directing it straight into the sketchbook in Theo’s hands.
The pages suddenly glowed. The ink began to shift.
Theo’s eyes widened.
The sketches peeled themselves off the paper, forming perfect, three-dimensional holographic projections in the air above the book. The figures moved with lifelike grace.
"Impressive, is it not?" Silas boasted. "I applied the foundational arrays of a Syndicate illusion domain to your flipbook concept. The images animate themselves!"
"Animation," Theo breathed, genuinely stunned.
Silas had weaponized an advanced assassination art to create the world’s first holographic, animated adult entertainment. The man was a degenerate pioneer!
"I am shocked," Theo admitted, closing the book and tossing it back up to the window.
"I knew you would appreciate my genius," Silas grinned.
"I am shocked by your research priorities," Theo corrected. "Your technical application is flawless, but your aesthetic tastes are severely lacking."
Silas caught the book, his grin instantly turning to stone.
...
The next morning.
Theo, Liana, and Elara walked down the avenue leading toward the Imperial Academy. Theo chewed on a steaming street pastry. Liana walked a few paces behind him, her sword resting at her hip.
They had not exchanged a single word since leaving the estate.
Elara tugged nervously at the hem of Theo’s sleeve. Her eyes darted back and forth between the two of them.
There was an invisible wall of awkward tension separating the Sovereign and the Empress.
As they approached the academy gates, they encountered a squad of Imperial Guards nailing fresh parchment to a bounty board.
"The Syndicate goes quiet, and now this happens," a guard grumbled, hammering a nail into the board.
"A rogue centurion," another guard spat. "Instead of fleeing to the borders, the idiot is roaming the merchant district."
The guards noticed Theo and bowed respectfully.
Thanks to his vast donations and recent display of force, Theo was practically treated like nobility within the academy grounds.
Theo nodded in acknowledgment and glanced at the fresh wanted poster.
*Bounty: Centurion Valerius.*
*Crime: Treason against the Imperial Army.*
*Threat Level: Middle-stage Inner Scenery.*
*Reward: Five thousand spirit stones and unrestricted access to the Academy’s restricted martial library.*
It was a lucrative bounty that would undoubtedly send every mercenary in the capital into a frenzy.
Theo ignored it entirely. He had more spirit stones than the provincial treasury, and he already possessed a supreme martial art. He continued walking toward the central courtyard.
Before long, they reached the fork in the path...
Theo was scheduled to visit the Array Tower to research physical formations.
Liana and Elara were heading toward the eastern dueling rings for morning sword practice.
They stopped at the intersection.
"What would you like for dinner tonight?" Theo asked, breaking the silence.
"Whatever you decide," Liana replied softly.
"Very well," Theo nodded.
He turned and walked down the path toward the Array Tower.
He made it exactly twelve paces before an invisible force compelled him to stop. He glanced over his shoulder, watching Liana’s slender figure retreating down the eastern path.
He chuckled quietly to himself, shaking his head at his own unprecedented lack of focus, and resumed his walk.
He did not see what happened next...
The moment Theo turned his head away, Liana stopped walking.
Standing on the edge of the stone steps, she reached up and tucked a loose strand of silver hair behind her ear.
Slowly, she turned her head, her eyes lingering on Theo’s proud silhouette as he vanished into the crowd.
She watched the empty space for several seconds before lowering her gaze and continuing toward the dueling rings.
Walking a few paces behind her, Elara blinked.
The young princess sighed quietly to herself. Things were incredibly weird today...
