Investing in My Yandare Villainess Fiancée:Each Reward Fuels My Growth
Chapter 147: Investment 147: Roots
With the immediate crisis resolved and the academy settling into its new, more permanent rhythm of protection and training, the headmaster granted Elliot and Seria a brief, well-earned leave to visit House Reingard, the first proper visit since the siege's devastating aftermath months earlier.
The estate greeted them with a warmth considerably different from their previous, danger-laden arrivals—the reinforced walls now bearing flowering vines that had grown steadily over the intervening months, the garrison's continued presence settled into comfortable, watchful routine rather than urgent, crisis-driven vigilance.
"It's beautiful," Seria observed, studying the estate's careful restoration with genuine appreciation. "You'd hardly know what happened here, looking at it now."
"Mother's been overseeing the gardens personally," Elliot said, smiling at the familiar sight of his family home restored to something resembling its former peace. "She always said tending growing things helped her process difficult periods."
Mira met them at the gates with the same enthusiastic energy that had characterized her since childhood, though considerably more composed and confident than the frightened girl who had once discovered Old Harmon's body in the orchard.
"You're staying for a whole week this time?" she asked, practically vibrating with excitement as she embraced her brother.
"A whole week," Elliot confirmed. "The headmaster insisted, actually. Said we'd earned proper rest."
"Finally," Mira said, rolling her eyes with theatrical exasperation. "It's about time someone made you actually take a break."
Cassian and Lyra welcomed them with equal warmth, the family settling into a comfortable evening of shared meals and quiet conversation that carried none of the underlying tension and dread that had characterized their previous visits.
"How are the new arrivals settling in?" Cassian asked, genuine interest evident as Elliot recounted recent weeks' developments regarding Corin, the Thornwick sisters, and Petra's gradual integration into Adonite's community.
"Well, I think," Elliot said. "Jin's guidance has proven invaluable, same as it was for Kael and me."
"And this Convergence you mentioned," Lyra said, concern evident despite her careful attempt to maintain a lighter tone. "Should we be worried?"
"I don't know yet," Elliot admitted honestly. "But the garrison's continued presence here should offer considerable protection, regardless of whatever this broader threat eventually reveals itself to be."
The following morning, Elliot found himself drawn, almost instinctively, toward the estate's cellar and the hidden chamber beneath it, the familiar pull of Skion's fragment guiding him back toward the site of its original discovery.
"You want to visit it again," Seria observed, joining him at the cellar's entrance.
"I do," Elliot confirmed. "I haven't been back since that first day, when everything about carrying this responsibility still felt so overwhelming and uncertain."
They descended together, the same two hundred steps carrying them down into the chamber's familiar depths, though the space itself felt considerably different now—quieter, more settled, the primordial hum that had once carried such urgent weight now resting into something closer to peaceful, patient dormancy.
"It's strange," Elliot said, studying the empty pedestal where the crystal shard had once rested, now permanently bonded within him. "Standing here again, after everything we've accomplished since. I remember being so afraid, that first day, of what this responsibility might actually demand of me."
"And now?" Seria asked gently.
"Now I understand it considerably better," Elliot said. "Not fully—I don't think anyone ever fully understands power like this. But well enough to trust it, and myself, considerably more than I did back then."
Seria studied him with quiet, proud affection. "You've grown remarkably, this past year. I don't think either of us could have predicted, that first day in this chamber, exactly how far we'd come."
"No," Elliot agreed, drawing her close. "Though I wouldn't trade a single moment of it, difficult as so much of it proved to be. Not with you beside me through all of it."
They remained in the quiet chamber a while longer, drawing comfort from the peaceful, settled presence of the fragment's origin point, before finally making their way back up toward the estate's warm, welcoming daylight.
The remainder of their visit passed in comfortable, restorative peace—training sessions with Mira in the orchard, quiet evenings spent with Cassian and Lyra, and the particular, healing comfort of simply existing, for a little while, as a family rather than as soldiers in an ongoing, considerable war.
On their final evening before returning to Adonite, Cassian drew Elliot aside for a private conversation, the weight of genuine, fatherly pride evident in his weathered expression.
"I want you to know," he said, "how proud I am of everything you've accomplished. Not just defeating the Architect, though that alone would be remarkable enough. But the person you've become throughout this entire ordeal—compassionate, principled, willing to extend genuine grace even to former enemies who've chosen to change."
"I learned that from you and Mother," Elliot said quietly.
"Perhaps," Cassian allowed, a small, genuine smile touching his features. "Though I suspect you've taught us both considerably more than we ever managed to teach you, given everything you've faced and overcome."
Elliot embraced his father, gratitude and quiet, hard-won peace settling deeply into his chest, before the following morning's departure carried him and Seria back toward Adonite, toward whatever future challenges still awaited, but carrying with them the steady, restorative comfort of family, love, and genuine, hard-won belonging.
That final night, before the household finally settled toward sleep, Mira sought Elliot out one last time, finding him on the same bench overlooking the orchard where he'd once taught her the basic ward that had, in its own small way, carried her through the estate's darkest hour.
"I've been practicing," she said, demonstrating the ward with considerably more confidence and precision than her earliest, uncertain attempts. "Every day, like you asked."
"I can tell," Elliot said, genuine pride evident in his voice. "You've gotten remarkably good at that."
"I want to actually help someday," Mira said, some of her earlier confidence giving way to more vulnerable, earnest hope. "Not just defend myself. Actually contribute, the way you and Seria and everyone else at Adonite does."
Elliot considered his sister carefully, recognizing the same fierce, determined spirit that had carried him through his own uncertain beginnings. "You will," he said. "When you're older, when you're properly trained. I promise you that."
"You're not just saying that to make me feel better?" Mira pressed.
"I'm saying it because I mean it," Elliot said firmly. "You're remarkable, Mira. Whatever path you eventually choose, I have no doubt you'll accomplish considerable things."
Mira's expression brightened considerably at that, genuine hope and determination settling into her young, earnest features.
"Then I'll keep practicing," she said. "Every single day, until I'm ready."
Elliot pulled her into a warm, affectionate embrace, grateful, as always, for the fierce, loving family that had shaped him into exactly who he'd needed to become throughout this entire, transformative year.
The following morning, as their carriage finally pulled away from House Reingard's familiar gates, Elliot watched his family's figures gradually fade into the distance, carrying with him the quiet, steady certainty that whatever challenges still lay ahead, he would always have this—a home, a family, and a love that no primordial threat could ever fully diminish.
