Chapter 85: Battle Spirit
Chapter 85: Chapter 85: Battle Spirit
The fracture widened beneath Jason’s spear.
He drove forward, but the dragon’s will gathered around the wound at once, closing on it like a hand around a splinter.
The pressure was immense. The pill had spent years collecting the strength it needed to subdue that will, drawing on countless lives, and even now the presence on the other side of the crack was far stronger than his own.
But there was a difference between them.
The dragon’s will was used to crushing opposition with sheer dominance. It had never needed to do anything else.
Jason’s will was doing something different.
It was concentrating.
Every part of him was bent toward a single point. The tip of the spear stayed steady even as the rest of his consciousness began to tremble around it. He understood the lesson instinctively, the way a man understands a blade after falling on it.
If he spread his resistance across the whole of the invading force, he would be flattened.
If he gathered everything into one point, he might be able to go through.
He pushed.
---
The remnants gathered around him again.
They were weaker now. The earlier clash had burned through much of what remained of them, and he knew he could not lean on them for long. But they had not vanished. He felt them aligning behind his will, a thin, shivering line of presences at his back.
They were people who had once stood against the same impossible force, and who had been given one final chance to make that resistance count.
Their combined weight steadied the spear.
Jason pressed forward another fraction.
The dragon’s will answered with a violent surge. The spear shuddered, and pain tore through his consciousness like a blade through paper. For an instant he was certain the weapon would snap.
Then he remembered the notification.
[Battle Spirit]
A manifestation of his will.
It did not make him stronger than the dragon. That was not what it offered. It gave his will a form, a shape that could be held and aimed.
And a form could be directed.
Jason adjusted the angle of the spear.
He stopped trying to pierce the broadest part of the invading force. Instead he turned the point toward a narrow place where its pressure ran thin, a seam where the tyrannical weight lay a little uneven.
The spear advanced.
---
The dragon’s will tried to crush the spearhead.
Jason shifted the pressure along the shaft, drawing the invading force toward the point of greatest resistance. Then he changed the angle again.
The spear slid through the opening.
The effect was immediate.
The dragon’s wall of will recoiled. It recoiled because the concentrated strike had passed through a part of the force that had never been prepared to yield.
Jason pressed the advantage.
The spear drove deeper into the fracture. The dragon’s will began to lose its cohesion around the point of impact, coming apart in long, shuddering threads.
And for the first time, Jason felt something from the presence that opposed him.
It was almost surprise.
It had met resistance before. It had crushed resistance before. But this resistance was different. Jason was not trying to dominate it with greater force.
He was finding a way through.
---
The dragon’s will gathered itself for one last surge.
The pressure became unbearable. The spear bent until it bowed like a drawn bow. Jason’s consciousness began to fracture again, the edges of him flaking away like old paint. Behind him, the sacrificed wills were nearly spent, their presence fading to a whisper.
He did not ask them to fight harder.
They had given everything they had.
Instead he tightened his grip on the spear.
It was made from his will. It was the expression of everything he refused to put down. His life. His future. Novaria. The promise he had made before he entered the Gate. The need to find out who had spent years feeding Hunters into a machine.
He did not need to be stronger than the dragon’s will in every way.
He only needed to make this thrust count.
Jason drove the spear forward.
The point passed through the final layer of resistance.
The fracture spread.
Then the invading will broke.
---
The pressure vanished.
Jason’s consciousness dropped into silence.
For a brief moment he felt nothing at all. There was no suppression. There was no pain. There was no weight forcing his Core into a shape it had never been meant to hold.
He could finally feel the full circulation of his essence.
It flowed through his meridians without resistance, following pathways that had been blocked for as long as he could remember. The sensation was almost frightening. He had grown so used to the suppression that he had never understood how much it had taken from him.
Now he felt the difference, like a man who has lived with a boot on his chest and suddenly drawn a breath.
His Soul Core was no longer being pressed down.
But the danger was not over.
The pill’s energy was still inside him.
And the process of absorbing it had only just begun.
---
The first surge reached his body, and his temperature began to climb.
At first the warmth was manageable. Then it became painful. His skin reddened. Steam began to curl from his shoulders. The air around him warped, rippling like the air above a summer road.
Beneath his boots, the metal platform started to soften.
Jason tried to regulate the flood through his cultivation method. It was beyond anything he had handled before. His body was not simply receiving a large quantity of essence. It was being forced to process the accumulated output of a refinement that had run for years.
The pill’s power poured into his meridians.
His Core swelled to meet it.
With the pressure gone, the energy had nowhere to hide. It circulated freely, riding every channel at once, and every channel burned.
He gritted his teeth until his jaw ached.
The temperature climbed past five hundred degrees. The metal under his feet began to melt, and the platform sagged into a glowing pool. The spear in his right hand softened, bent, and sagged, and he opened his fingers just before it collapsed into a shining puddle on the floor.
He could not afford to lose his focus.
If he let the energy run wild, it could burn out the very Core he had spent years rebuilding.
---
The chamber doors burst open.
Several Third Level guards rushed in, swords drawn.
They stopped almost at once.
Jason stood at the center of the refinement platform, wrapped in heat shimmer and a faint haze of gold and crimson. The metal beneath him ran like water. The remaining conduits flickered, dimmed, and went dark one after another. The great formation was dying, one section at a time.
None of them understood what they were looking at.
One took a cautious step forward.
"What happened to the pill?"
Jason did not answer.
He was too busy keeping his body from coming apart.
The guard raised his sword. "Move away from the platform!"
Jason lifted his head.
The guard froze.
There was nothing particularly threatening in his expression. He was simply too deep in the struggle to acknowledge the order. But when the guard took another step, Jason’s essence shifted, and the man stopped dead.
He did not know why.
Every instinct he owned was telling him that coming one pace closer would be a mistake.
---
Jason’s cultivation began to rise.
The remaining energy flooded into his Core and shoved it toward the next stage. Late Stage of the Second Level came and went in a heartbeat, and then Peak, and the barrier to the Third Level gave way like rotten wood.
Third Level, Initial Stage.
The advancement was violent. His Core expanded, and the circulation of his essence grew faster and denser, so strong that for a moment he felt it might carry him past the limit his body could bear.
He resisted.
He knew that growing too fast could ruin a foundation. He had seen what became of cultivators who forced a breakthrough without stability, powerful on the surface and cracked underneath. He would not come out of this chamber with a strong but unstable Core.
He slowed the rate of growth as much as he could.
The pill’s energy kept pouring in.
The Core advanced again.
Intermediate Stage.
Jason immediately stopped pushing his cultivation higher.
The remaining tyrannical energy continued surging through his body, threatening to shove his Core toward the Late Stage and beyond. He could force another breakthrough.
He could feel the possibility sitting within reach, carried by the overwhelming power flooding his meridians.
But he also understood the danger.
His cultivation had already advanced through two major levels in a remarkably short period. Forcing it further would place an enormous strain on a foundation that had only just escaped years of suppression.
His Core might become powerful, but power without stability would leave him with weaknesses that could take years to repair.
He would not make that mistake.
Instead, he changed the direction of the energy.
Rather than allowing the remaining power to pour into his Core, he began guiding it into his flesh, bones, muscles, and internal organs. He used his cultivation method to circulate the tyrannical energy through his body in controlled waves, allowing it to temper him from the inside out.
The process was no less painful than the breakthrough.
His muscles tightened as the energy flooded through them. His bones vibrated beneath the strain, and a deep ache spread through his entire body. Every wave felt as though his flesh were being torn apart and rebuilt, but he maintained control over the circulation.
The tyrannical energy was not gentle. It carried the accumulated power of years of refinement, and his body had to endure its full force.
He gritted his teeth and continued.
His Core remained at the Intermediate Stage of the Third Level, its newly expanded structure settling into a steadier rhythm.
Meanwhile, the remaining energy gradually strengthened his physical body, reinforcing the foundation that would support his future cultivation.
He did not know how long the process would take.
He only knew that rushing forward now would cost him later.
He would rather advance more slowly than build a foundation that could not bear the weight of his own power.
---
The barrier between the Third and Fourth Levels remained beyond his reach.
Jason could feel the difference between his current state and the next level. The Fourth Level required more than simply accumulating essence. It demanded a change in how the Core circulated and held its power.
He needed time to prepare. He would have refined his essence, steadied his foundation, and made sure his Core was ready for the strain.
He had none of those luxuries.
The pill’s energy was still surging through him.
But instead of using the remaining power to force the barrier open, he continued directing it into his physical body.
His Core trembled under the pressure.
He steadied it.
Another wave of tyrannical energy surged through his meridians, and he guided it into his muscles and bones. The strain nearly made him lose control, but he adjusted the circulation and held firm.
Slowly, the violent flood began to subside.
The heat remained intense, but the energy was no longer threatening to push his cultivation beyond what his foundation could safely sustain. His body had absorbed much of the remaining power, and the rest settled into a controlled cycle within his meridians.
Only when the worst of the surge had passed did the heat begin to ease.
The metal around his feet cooled from glowing liquid to a dark, warped lump.
Jason stood motionless in the center of the ruined chamber.
He was exhausted. His body ached. His spear was gone.
But the pressure that had suppressed him for hours no longer sat on him in the same way.
For the first time, he could feel the full strength of his cultivation.
---
The guards recovered their nerve.
"He has compromised the refinement!" one of them shouted. "Take him alive!"
They rushed forward.
Jason turned to face them.
He did not draw another weapon.
The first guard swung. Jason stepped inside the arc of the blade and struck the man’s wrist. The sword spun out of his grip and clattered across the floor. Jason followed with a palm to the chest, and the guard crashed to the ground.
The second came in from the side. Jason shifted his weight, caught the man’s arm, and turned his momentum into the first guard. Both of them went down in a heap.
A third came from behind.
Jason turned before the blade could reach him. He struck the man in the stomach, swept a leg out from under him, and sent him sprawling.
The others hesitated.
They had watched this man struggle against their comrades earlier. They had seen the wounds, the faltering techniques, the difficulty he had keeping his guard. Now he moved with an ease that made every earlier judgment meaningless.
Jason had no intention of explaining.
He advanced.
The remaining guards were beaten within moments. Some tried to retreat. Others tried to coordinate a last, desperate attack. None of them could keep up. Jason used only as much force as it took to end each fight, and he wasted nothing on unnecessary motion.
When the last guard fell, the chamber was silent again.
---
At last, he turned his attention to the system.
[New Skill Acquired: Battle Spirit]
He opened the description.
[Battle Spirit]
[The host’s willpower can be projected into a tangible or semi-tangible form.]
[The manifestation may be infused into the host’s body, weapons, or techniques, strengthening their effectiveness according to the host’s willpower, control, and compatibility with the chosen medium.]
[Battle Spirit is not an independent source of power. Its strength depends on the host’s will, precision, and ability to maintain the manifestation.]
Jason read it twice.
It explained what he had felt in the struggle. He had not beaten the dragon’s will through power. He had gathered his own will into a form that could pierce a stronger force at a single point.
The spear had come naturally. It was an expression of everything he had learned in years of fighting.
He looked down at the ruined metal beneath his feet.
’I will need a new weapon.’
His ordinary spear was gone.
Fortunately, he had another.
The Stoneborn Spear.
---
A heavy impact shook the corridor outside.
Then another.
Jason looked toward the entrance.
The footsteps that followed were different from those of the Third Level guards. They were slower, heavier, perfectly in step. He felt the pressure of several powerful cultivators approaching, each presence dense and cold.
The first group had been trying to capture him.
These people would not make the same mistake.
Jason opened his hand.
The remaining essence in his Core settled into a steady circulation, calm and deep. He was no longer the weakened Hunter who had stumbled into this chamber.
But he was not about to underestimate the people coming through that door.
