Investing in My Crippled Wife: My Duchess Makes me Overpowered
Chapter 82: Aurelia
The afternoon sun was warm. The streets were busy. Merchants hawked their wares. Children ran between stalls. The smell of fresh bread and roasted meat hung in the air.
He walked home.
Isolde was waiting.
She was in her chair by the window. A book open in her lap. She looked up when he entered.
"Well?"
He sat across from her. Opened the folder. Showed her the rules. The format. The list of competitors.
She read it slowly. Her expression shifted.
"These are the confirmed competitors?"
"Yes."
She pointed at a name. "Kal Draven. Tier 5. Dominated in the last three tournaments."
"I know."
"And this one. Vespera Pendragon. Tier 4. Your rival."
"I know."
She looked at him.
"You’re going to fight them."
"Yes."
She was quiet for a long moment.
"Are you scared?"
He considered the question.
"A little."
She reached for his hand.
"Good. Only fools aren’t scared."
He squeezed her hand.
"I’ll be careful."
"You’d better be."

One week passed like a flash
Emeric trained every day. Every hour. Every moment he could steal. The backyard became his arena. The training dummies became his enemies. He pushed himself past exhaustion, past pain, past the limits he had once thought were absolute.
He trained with his party. Collin’s shield work. Maynard’s archery. Mira’s healing. Clarisse’s strange, silent magic. They sparred until they couldn’t stand. They strategized until their voices went hoarse.
He trained with Isolde. She watched from her chair. She corrected his footwork. His grip. His breathing. She had been a commander once. She knew war. She knew combat. She knew what it took to survive.
"You’re telegraphing again," she said.
"I know."
"Then stop."
He stopped.
He trained alone. In the dark. In the cold. In the rain. He moved through forms until they were muscle memory. Until they were instinct. Until he didn’t have to think anymore.
The morning of the final week, he woke before dawn.
He sat on the grass. Crossed his legs. Reached for the system.

He stared at the numbers.
Tier 6.
He had broken through.
It had happened three nights ago. A training session that had pushed him past his limits. A moment of clarity. A surge of power. The system had pulsed. The barrier had shattered.
He was Tier 6 now. Stats above seventy across the board. He had become something else entirely.
He closed the system and stood.
The sun was rising.
Later that morning, he visited Bjorn.
The forge was hot. The hearth roared. Bjorn was working—shaping something small, something delicate. He looked up when Emeric entered.
"You’re late."
"I’m not late. You’re just early."
Bjorn grunted. Set his hammer down.
"What do you want?"
Emeric reached into his coat. Pulled out a small leather pouch. Handed it to Bjorn.
Bjorn opened it. His eyes widened.
Inside were scales. Small. Dark. Shimmering with an otherworldly light. They seemed to absorb the light around them, not reflect it.
"What are these?"
"Nyxie. My summon. She’s hibernating. These fell off before she went under."
Bjorn picked one up. Turned it over. Studied it.
"This is... incredible. I’ve never seen anything like this." He looked at Emeric. "Do you know what this is?"
"No."
"It’s void-touched. Pure void essence. Extracted from the body of a creature that exists between worlds." He paused. "This could make something legendary. Something unique."
"Can you use it?"
"I can try." Bjorn set the scale down. "It’ll take time. But if I can figure out the right technique..." He trailed off. "Come back before the Trials. I’ll have something for you."
Emeric nodded.
"Thank you."
"Don’t thank me yet." Bjorn picked up his hammer. "Now get out. I’ve got work to do."
That afternoon, Emeric made arrangements with Tatia.
She arrived at the house. Her satchel on her shoulder. Her expression professional.
"You’re leaving."
"Yes. The Trials. I don’t know how long I’ll be gone."
"Two weeks. Maybe three."
"Maybe more."
She nodded. "I’ll stay with her. Morning to evening. Same as always."
Emeric reached into his coat. Pulled out a pouch. Handed it to her.
Tatia opened it. Her eyes widened.
"Five hundred gold?"
"For your services. The next week. And the week after. And the week after that if needed."
She stared at him.
"This is... too much."
"It’s not enough." He met her eyes. "You’ve taken care of her. You’ve given her hope. You’ve given her strength. That’s worth more than gold."
Tatia was quiet for a long moment.
Then she smiled. It was a small thing. But it was real.
"Thank you."
The hour of departure came. Emeric stood at the door. His backpack was packed. His daggers were at his hips. His cloak was around his shoulders. The sword wrapped in cloth was in his hands.
Isolde was in her chair. Tatia stood behind her.
He crossed to Isolde. Knelt in front of her.
"I’ll be careful." ℯℯ𝑙.
She smiled. It didn’t reach her eyes.
"Don’t lie."
He laughed.
"I’ll try to be careful."
"That’s better."
He leaned in. Kissed her. Passionate. Deep. Full of everything he couldn’t say.
She kissed him back.
Tatia coughed.
They pulled apart. Isolde’s cheeks were red. Emeric was grinning.
"I should go," he said.
"Go."
He leaned in one more time. Pressed his lips to her ear.
"I’ll win. And when I come back, I’ll give you everything. A home. A future. A life."
He pulled back. Looked at her.
She was stunned. Speechless.
He stood and walked out the door.
---
The carriage was waiting.
The driver opened the door. Emeric climbed in.
He set his backpack on the seat. The sword wrapped in cloth beside it. Bjorn had told him not to open it. That it needed to mature. He didn’t know what that meant. He would find out when he needed it.
The carriage lurched into motion.
The ride took hours.
Emeric watched the landscape pass. Fields. Forests. Rivers. Villages. The world stretched before him, vast and unknown.
He thought about the Trials. About his opponents. About the battles ahead.
He thought about Isolde. About her face. Her kiss. Her words.
He thought about the promise he had whispered in her ear.
He would keep it.
