He was quiet for a moment.

"I just did."

She pulled back. Looked at him. Her eyes searched his face.

"That’s not an answer."

"It’s the only one I have."

She stared at him. Then she buried her face in his chest.

"Thank you for finding me," she said. "I have never felt more helpless."

"I know." He held her tighter. "I’m here. I’m not going anywhere. I will always be there for you. Always."

She nodded. Sniffled.

He pulled back and looked at her.

Her nightgown was thin. White. Almost transparent. The moonlight through the window made it worse. He could see the curve of her breasts. The peaks of her nipples. The shadow between her thighs.

She saw him looking. Didn’t move to cover herself.

"Emeric—"

"You need to rest."

She blinked. "What?"

"Rest. Sleep. I’ll stay up. I’ll watch."

"But—"

"I’m not going to leave you alone. Not tonight."

She stared at him. Her eyes were soft. Grateful.

"Okay," she whispered.

---

The bedroom was large.

By noble standards, it was modest. But by any other measure, it was beautiful.

A large bed—four-poster, draped in deep blue curtains. A study in the corner—a desk, a chair, a lamp that burned low. A makeup section for Isolde—a mirror, a small table, a cushioned stool she could reach from her chair. A walk-in closet—two sections, one for her, one for him.

A bathroom—huge, tiled in white marble, with a copper tub large enough for two. The same kind of tub they had shared in their first home. But bigger. Better. A reminder of how far they had come.

He helped Isolde settle properly into bed. Pulled the covers up to her chin. Kissed her forehead.

"Sleep."

"You’ll stay?"

"I’ll stay."

She closed her eyes.

He lay beside her. His arm around her. His fingers stroked her hair. Slow. Gentle. Over and over until her breathing slowed and her body relaxed and she drifted into sleep.

He watched her.

His mind raced.

Who sent him? Who wanted her dead? Was it the Queen? The Broker? Someone else? Someone he hadn’t even considered?

He didn’t know.

He didn’t know anything.

And that terrified him.

Then the system pulsed.

---

Emeric stared at the notification.

What?

He read it again.

System evolution? Did this mean that he would also evolve?

He was about to find out.

The system pulsed.

---

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

[SYSTEM EVOLUTION — IN PROGRESS]

[ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETION: 47 SECONDS]

[WARNING: THIS PROCESS WILL BE DISORIENTING. REMAIN STILL. REMAIN CALM. DO NOT RESIST.]

—

Emeric felt it.

A warmth in his chest. Spreading outward. Through his limbs and his mind. He felt the sensation in his very being.

It wasn’t painful. It was... strange. Like something was rearranging itself inside him. Like something was waking up.

The warmth grew, brightening as it spread through. Them it became something else.

He felt a tiny pain slice through his chest for a millisecond and then it was gone.

---

[SYSTEM EVOLUTION — COMPLETE]

[CONGRATULATIONS, EMERIC HALDEN.]

[THE DEVOTION LEDGER HAS EVOLVED.]

[NEW FUNCTION UNLOCKED: SYSTEM SENTIENCE]

[THE SYSTEM CAN NOW COMMUNICATE.]

---

Emeric blinked.

That’s it?

The system pulsed.

[RESPONSE: FURTHER FUNCTIONS WILL BE COMMUNICATED SHORTLY.]

Emeric stared at the notification.

Did it just give me a cold response ?

Oh well. That was done.

He better get some sleep. He would figure out the new functions tomorrow.

The next morning.

Breakfast was served in the dining hall.

The table was long. Too long for two people. But Marta had done her best. Fresh bread. Eggs. Bacon. Fruit from the orchard. Tea from the kitchen.

Isolde sat at one end. Emeric at the other. Between them—empty chairs. Empty space.

"It’s too big," Isolde said.

"It won’t be. Once we have guests."

"Guests?"

"Your family. My party. People who matter."

Her face darkened and he caught himself.

That was stupid. Her family had disowned her. His had all but done the same, much until recently when he had attained this title. They suddenly wanted more to do with him?

No.

"People who matter," she repeated after a brief second. "I like that."

They ate in comfortable silence.

By Midday, he had finished his inspection of the mansion. There was so much that needed to be done.

Isolde left to oversee the maids. She wanted to explore the manor as well. To see what needed to be done.

Emeric didn’t stop her. Graves accompanied her. Pip carried things. Bess and Nella trailed behind.

He watched her go. Then he turned to the study.

He sat at the desk. Pulled out parchment. Dipped his pen.

And he wrote.

The letter to Bjorn was short. Practical. He told him the manor was falling apart. That he needed dwarve artisans for the job. That he would pay fair wages and provide room and board. That he could only trust him.

He sealed it. Handed it to Pip. Told him to find the fastest messenger in the village.

Then he sat back.

Graves arrived an hour later.

He knocked on the study door. Entered with a slight bow. Stood before the desk with his hands clasped behind his back.

"My lord."

"Graves. Sit."

The old butler hesitated. Then sat.

"Tell me everything."

"The intruder entered through the east wing," Graves said. "The window was unlocked. It appears he climbed the ivy. No one saw him enter. No one heard him."

"Who was on duty?"

"Pip. He was in the stables. He saw nothing. The maids were asleep. I was in my quarters. I heard nothing."

"Did anyone see anything unusual before the attack?"

Graves hesitated.

"One of the maids—Nella—mentioned a man in the village. A stranger. He arrived two days ago. Asked about the manor. Asked about you. She thought nothing of it at the time."

"Do we know where he is now?"

"He vanished. The same day the intruder attacked."
