Chapter 69: Chapter 69 | You Can Come In Here You Know!
Shira looked at him.
"How did it go," she said. Not the way she asked about dungeons — differently. More direct.
He told her everything. Han Dori’s reason. The junior technician witness. The remote classification trigger. The simultaneous filing plan. Two weeks.
She listened.
When he finished she was quiet for a moment.
"The technician," she said. "He saw the reclassification notification."
"Yes," Kai said.
"He’s been carrying that for three years," she said.
"Yes," Kai said.
She looked at the window.
"Three years," she said. Not for the first time. But differently each time she said it.
"It ends in two weeks," Kai said.
She looked at him.
"It ends in two weeks," he said again. "Not the recovery. Not everything. But this part — the Ashford family having power over what happened — that ends."
She held his gaze for a moment.
Then she looked at the window.
"Yes," she said. Quiet. Certain. "It does."
He went to Mira’s door.
====
Three knocks.
It opened before the third knock finished.
She had the board up immediately.
Tell me.
He told her everything — same as Shira, same order. Han Dori’s reason first because that mattered. Then the technician. The remote trigger. Two weeks. Simultaneous filing.
She read his face through the whole thing.
When he finished she held the marker for a long moment.
She wrote slowly.
She held the board up.
He built a case for three years because someone he knew didn’t make it out.
"Yes," Kai said.
She held the board.
She wrote: And you built a case in three weeks because two people you married did.
He looked at that.
He did not have a response for it.
She wrote one more line and held it up.
That’s not nothing.
He looked at the board.
"No," he said. "It’s not."
She lowered the board.
She started to close the door.
Then she stopped.
She held the board up one final time. She had written it already — she had written it before she opened the door, he realized. She had been holding it behind the board this whole time.
It said: Shira’s been doing the form every morning. I can hear her through the wall. I’ve been listening since morning three.
He read it.
He looked at her.
"You didn’t say anything," he said.
She wrote: It wasn’t mine to say anything about.
He looked at the board.
’The same words,’ he thought. ’She used the same words I used to Shira this morning.’
He did not say that either.
"Two weeks," he said.
She nodded once.
She closed the door.
He stood in the hallway between both doors.
’Morning three,’ he thought. ’She’s been listening since morning three. Forty days of knowing and saying nothing.’
He pressed his palm to the wall.
Both rhythms. Both present.
He went to the couch.
He sat.
The system chimed.
『 BOND UPDATE. 』
『 Bond Level — Shira Voss: 2.3 / 10. 』 『 Bond Level — Mira Elys: 2.3 / 10. 』
『 The system notes: 』 『 This morning Shira Voss said: you can come in here you know. 』 『 She has been doing the form for forty-two mornings believing Host was asleep. 』 『 This morning she chose to stop believing that. 』 『 That is not a small thing. 』 『 Mira Elys has been listening to the form through the wall since morning three. 』 『 She said nothing for forty days because it was not hers to say. 』 『 She said it today because Host told her the same thing about himself and she wanted him to know he was not the only one keeping it. 』 『 These are not large gestures. 』 『 The system notes them anyway. 』 『 Large gestures are easy to measure. 』 『 These are harder. 』
Kai read it.
He put the phone down.
’You can come in here you know,’ he thought.
He looked at the ceiling.
’She said that.’
He lay back on the couch.
Through the wall — Shira. The deliberate rhythm settling. She was at the desk. He could hear the slight shift of the physio sheet. She was making notes on it — not reading, writing. Something she had decided during the conversation and was getting down before she lost the specificity of it.
Through Mira’s door — the audio reader starting. Music. Blue spine album.
She started following the first phrase almost immediately.
Twenty seconds.
Second phrase — twenty-two.
Third — twenty-eight.
Fourth — twenty-five.
Fifth phrase. The first time she had done five in a single session.
She held it for nineteen seconds and let it end.
She did not start a sixth.
But she had done five.
’Five,’ he thought. ’Last week it was one and she stopped herself. Tonight it was five.’
He closed his eyes.
’Two weeks,’ he thought. ’Then the filing. Then whatever comes after.
’Both of you, getting further every day.’
’I’ll be ready when you are.’
He fell asleep.
—--
Tuesday.
Thirteen days until the filing.
Kai was up at four-thirty. He pressed his palm to the floor. Both rhythms present. Shira awake — the deliberate quality already settled, which meant she had been awake for a while. Mira sleeping.
He made tea.
He left cups outside both doors.
He sat on the couch.
He heard Shira’s door at four fifty-eight. The wheelchair. The living room. The settling sound.
He gave her two minutes.
Then he picked up his cup and walked to the living room doorway.
She was in the center of the room. Right arm extended. She looked at him when he came in — not surprised. She had told him he could come in. That was still standing.
He sat on the couch.
She ran the form.
He watched through the Nerve Sense as the signal traveled — and then something happened that had not happened before.
The signal made it further.
Not all the way. Not to completion. But past the usual cutoff point. Past the point where it had been stalling for forty-two mornings. It traveled one increment further and then dropped.
She felt it.
He knew she felt it because she stopped.
She looked at her arm.
She was very still.
"That was different," she said.
"Yes," Kai said.
