Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate
Chapter 63 | The Ashford Family!
Chapter 63: Chapter 63 | The Ashford Family!
She turned toward him.
She held up the board.
The audio reader. Where did you put the albums.
He looked at her.
The three albums he had left on the audio reader’s input three weeks ago — the ones he’d found after researching sonic frequency and Gift channel stimulation. He had left them with a note that said these might work differently. She had not mentioned them since.
"Still on the reader," he said. "I didn’t move them."
She held the board.
She didn’t write anything for a moment.
Then: Which one did you put first.
He thought back. He had stacked them by what the academic paper had described — the researcher’s recommendation for sequencing. Traditional instrumental first, then acoustic, then the third which had the specific frequency range that matched Mira’s Gift profile.
"Traditional instrumental," he said. "The one with the blue spine."
She lowered the board.
She went back to her room.
He heard the audio reader start.
Not speech. Music.
—--
Twenty minutes later the Resonance Echo picked something up.
Not the Gift frequency. Not word-practice.
Something he had not heard before.
Mira’s voice — at fourteen percent function, barely more than a breath — following the melody. Not singing. Not humming. Something between them. The shape of the music in her throat without the volume to carry it.
Seven seconds.
She stopped.
The music kept playing.
Eight seconds of silence.
She started again. Following a different part of the melody this time — higher, the part that would have required full vocal cord function to produce properly. At fourteen percent it was barely audible even through the Resonance Echo. But it was there.
Twelve seconds.
She stopped herself.
’She’s trying to match it,’ he thought. ’Not practicing scales. Not holding a frequency. Actually following the melody. Following the music.
He stood in the kitchen with the rice on the stove and listened.
Forty seconds of music without her voice.
Then she followed a third phrase. Softer than the first two. More careful. Like someone feeling for where the edges of something are.
Eleven seconds.
The phrase ended naturally and she let it end.
She did not start again.
But she had not stopped herself that time. She had followed the phrase to its end.
The system chimed — not the financial tone. The single soft note.
『 MIRA ELYS — VOCAL ACTIVITY LOGGED. 』 『 Third session following musical phrase rather than isolated frequency. Duration: 11 seconds on final phrase. First instance of phrase completion — did not stop before the natural end. 』 『 Vocal cord function: still 14%. No measurable change. 』 『 Gift channel: still 99% sealed. No measurable change. 』 『 The system notes: the measurements have not changed. The thing that changed is not measurable. 』 『 She followed a phrase to its end. That is different from stopping herself. 』 『 That is different from everything she has done before. 』
Kai read it.
He put the phone down.
He stirred the rice.
’The measurements have not changed,’ he thought. ’The thing that changed is not measurable.’
He looked at the ceiling.
’You followed it to the end,’ he thought. ’Not because you ran out of breath. Not because you stopped yourself. Because the phrase ended and you let it.
’That’s the first time.’
He made lunch.
He did not tell her what he had heard. It was hers to keep until she was ready to give it.
=====
Afternoon turning to evening.
Han Dori called.
"The dampener device," Han Dori said. "Supply chain trace came back faster than expected. The device was purchased through a licensed equipment supplier in the north district. The purchasing account traces to a security consulting firm."
"Foundation-connected," Kai said.
"The firm is not Foundation-connected directly," Han Dori said. "It’s connected to a family named Ashford."
Kai was quiet for a moment.
"Ashford," he said.
"The family that provided the cross-family expedition authority," Han Dori said. "The family whose internal employee filed the SSS-rank classification before it was altered."
Kai looked at the wall.
"Not the Renmei family," he said.
"Not the Renmei family," Han Dori confirmed. "The Renmei provided classification authority but they were used. Someone told them the dungeon was S-rank. Someone within Ashford family channels provided the false information and organized the joint expedition."
"The Ashford family deliberately destroyed two heroines from two different families," Kai said.
"And then arranged for those heroines to be quietly married off to a discarded Renmei son," Han Dori said. "Contained. Invisible. Not recovering."
Kai pressed his palm flat on the kitchen counter.
"Why," he said.
"I don’t know yet," Han Dori said. "But I know the Ashford family has been monitoring the hero licensing registry. Your application flagged something in their system."
"Because of my wives," Kai said.
"Because of your wives," Han Dori said.
A pause.
"The information leak," Kai said. "The person inside the district monitoring system."
"Being investigated," Han Dori said. "I flagged it to the licensing board this morning. Whoever it is has been careful but the dampener supply chain gives us a thread we didn’t have yesterday."
"The Ashford family," Kai said.
"The Ashford family," Han Dori confirmed.
He hung up.
Kai stood in the kitchen.
’Ashford,’ he thought. ’Not a faction. Not an abstract enemy. A specific family with a name and a purchasing account and a security consulting firm and a reason they needed two specific heroines eliminated from the hero ecosystem.’
’What reason,’ he thought.
He wrote the name in the notebook.
He added it to the timeline.
He looked at the full picture now — the cross-family expedition, the dual classification, the deliberate targeting, the containment arrangement, the registry monitoring, the operatives.
He looked at what he had written three weeks ago and underlined.
They need something from them. Not just silence. Something specific.
He wrote under it: What do Shira Voss and Mira Elys have that the Ashford family needs contained.
He sat with the question.
He didn’t have the answer.
But he had the name now.
That was enough to start pulling.
------
Dinner.
He set the table. Both wives came out. They ate.
Halfway through the meal Shira set her spoon down.
"You found something," she said.
He looked at her.
"The phone call this afternoon," she said. "Han Dori."
