Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate
Chapter 61 | My WIves Are In Danger
Chapter 61: Chapter 61 | My WIves Are In Danger
Han Dori was quiet for a moment.
"They moved the moment you left the building," he said.
"Yes."
"They knew the hearing result before you did. They knew it would be dismissed." Han Dori looked at the stairwell where the district security officers were finishing their documentation. "This was the backup plan. If the legal route failed, physical pressure on the arrangement."
"They were going to the apartment," Kai said.
"Yes."
"My wives were in the apartment."
"Yes."
Kai looked at the stairwell.
"The dampener device," Kai said. "It suppressed the district monitoring. Someone told them which entrance wasn’t covered. Someone with access to the monitoring file."
"I know," Han Dori said. "That’s the next problem. After today."
He left to finish the security documentation.
Kai sat in the stairwell alone for a minute.
His right arm hurt considerably.
’I told them they wouldn’t move,’ he thought. ’I told Mira the legal risk was too high. She said the Foundation had been doing criminal things for three years.’
’She was right.’
He stood up.
He went upstairs.
—--
He knocked. Three knocks.
The door opened almost immediately — Mira, with the whiteboard already written.
She held it up.
You’re hurt.
"My shoulder," Kai said. "Not serious. Two men in the stairwell. They’re in district custody now."
She held the board.
She looked at his shoulder.
She stepped back from the door.
Shira was behind her — she had wheeled to the doorway. She looked at his right arm the way she always looked at injuries — clinically, reading the damage before anything else.
"Show me," she said.
He came inside. He pulled the jacket off carefully. The shoulder was visibly bruised now, the discoloration spreading across the joint.
Shira looked at it for a moment.
"Kinetic Gift," she said.
"Yes. Low-grade. The protective layer took most of it."
"Not all of it."
"Not all of it," he agreed.
She looked at the bruising.
"Ice," she said. Not to him. To the room.
Mira was already gone — the tap of the cane moving to the kitchen. The specific sounds of someone who had memorized the layout precisely and was moving through it fast.
She came back with the ice pack in the dish towel. She held it out.
Not quite the right direction. Two centimeters off.
He reached out and took it.
Their fingers touched around the towel for half a second before she released it.
She stood in the doorway.
She picked up the marker.
She wrote something.
She held the board up.
Two men.
"Yes," Kai said.
In the building.
"Second floor landing. They came in through the service entrance. The district monitoring didn’t cover it."
You were at the hearing.
"Yes."
You came back.
He looked at the board.
"You called me," he said.
She held the marker.
She wrote: You answered on the first ring.
He looked at that.
’She called because she knew something was wrong,’ he thought. ’She felt the building change before I did. Her Sound Mapping — the pressure shift, the rhythm of two people who weren’t supposed to be in the stairwell.’
"Your Sound Mapping," he said. "You felt them in the stairwell."
She looked at him.
She wrote: Second floor landing. Two presences. Wrong rhythm.
"You felt that from in here," he said.
She wrote: I’ve been mapping the building for three weeks.
Kai stood in the hallway with the ice pack against his shoulder and looked at Mira.
’Three weeks,’ he thought. ’Since she discovered the ability. She’s been mapping the entire building. Every rhythm. Every presence. She knows this building the way she knows the apartment.
’She felt two wrong rhythms on the second floor and she called me.’
"Thank you," he said.
She lowered the board.
She went back to her room.
Kai stood in the hallway.
Shira was still in the doorway of the living room. She had been watching the exchange.
She said nothing for a moment.
Then: "The hearing was dismissed."
"Yes," Kai said.
"The Foundation has no legal ground."
"None."
"But they sent two men to the building anyway."
"Yes."
She looked at the hallway wall.
"That means this isn’t about the jurisdiction," she said. "It never was. The jurisdiction was a mechanism. What they actually want is—" She stopped.
"Is us quiet," Kai said. "Contained. Not recovering. Not talking."
She looked at him.
"You know more than you’ve told me," she said.
"Yes," Kai said. "I’ve been building the picture. I’ll tell you what I have when it’s more complete."
She held his gaze for a moment.
Then she said: "After the shoulder."
He almost smiled.
"After the shoulder," he agreed.
She went back to the window.
He sat on the couch with the ice pack.
His right arm was working again — painful but functional. He flexed his fingers slowly.
The system chimed.
『 PROTECTION EVENT — ACTIVE. 』
『 Host intercepted two Foundation operatives inside a protected residence building. No Gift registered. Kinetic combat output derived entirely from W.I.A. investment returns. Both operatives incapacitated without lethal force. 』
『 FINANCIAL BREAKDOWN: 』 『 Civil Welfare Board filing fees: 2,400 coins → ×500 = 1,200,000 coins returned. 』 『 Hearing documentation preparation: 800 coins → ×500 = 400,000 coins returned. 』 『 District monitoring filing: 0 coins → non-material return only. 』 『 Total financial returned: 1,600,000 coins. 』 『 Previous account balance: 380,635,847 coins. 』 『 Current account balance: 382,235,847 coins. 』
『 NON-FINANCIAL RETURNS — PROTECTION EVENT: 』 『 Sincerity rating: ABSOLUTE. Host left a legal hearing mid-session upon detecting distress signal. Ran four minutes. Took a kinetic hit that will bruise for a week rather than let two people reach the apartment floor. 』 『 Gale Strike Echo — Level 2 ceiling broken. Level 3 unlocked. Wind pressure generation increased. Rotation speed increased. Range extended to 9 meters. Precision at peak. 』 『 Nerve Sense — Gift signature detection added. Host can now identify Gift type from energy signature at range, not only presence and rhythm. 』 『 Resonance Echo — Level 1.5 advancing to Level 2. Emotional frequency detection sharpened. Vocal cord activation tracking now includes pitch and duration simultaneously. 』
『 Bond Level — Shira Voss: 2.1 / 10. 』 『 Bond Level — Mira Elys: 2.1 / 10. 』
『 MULTIPLIER STATUS: 』 『 Current multiplier: ×500. 』 『 Condition for ×2,000: Bond Level 3.0 on both wives simultaneously. 』 『 Progress: 2.1 / 3.0. 』
『 The system notes: 』 『 Mira Elys has been mapping the entire building for three weeks. 』 『 Every floor. Every entrance. Every rhythm that belongs and every rhythm that does not. 』 『 She felt two wrong rhythms on the second floor and she called you. 』 『 She could not speak to tell you what was wrong. She could only call. 』 『 She called anyway. 』 『 The system notes this because what Mira Elys did today was the bravest thing she has done in eight months. 』 『 She used a new ability she has told nobody about to protect people she has not yet admitted she cares about. 』 『 The system notes it. 』 『 Host should know. 』
Kai read it.
He read the last four lines again.
He put the phone down.
He pressed his left palm to the cushion — the right arm was still icing.
Both rhythms. Both present. Shira at the window, the deliberate quality but underneath it something different from usual — the tight-held quality of someone who had been very frightened and was processing it into analysis because that was how she processed things.
Mira’s room. Still. And then the Resonance Echo found the frequency — her Gift’s base note, held.
Not eight seconds.
Not eleven.
Twenty-three seconds.
Clean and sustained and deliberate, longer than she had ever held it, and she did not stop herself.
She let it run until it ended on its own.
Then silence.
Then she started the audio reader.
Kai sat on the couch with ice on his shoulder and listened to the twenty-three-second note still resonating in the Resonance Echo and thought: ’You were frightened. Both of you. And neither of you panicked. And Mira called me with an ability she’s never mentioned to anyone.’
’She mapped the whole building,’ he thought. ’Three weeks. Every floor. For this.’
He closed his eyes.
His shoulder ached.
He did not mind it at all.
