Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate
Chapter 141 | The Letter
Chapter 141: Chapter 141 | The Letter
The letter arrived on a Tuesday.
Kai found it in the mailbox when he went down to collect the grocery delivery. No stamp. No return address. Just his name in careful handwriting on a plain white envelope.
He carried it upstairs with the groceries.
Shira was at the table with the physio sheet. Mira was in her room with the RF-7 running. Normal morning.
He set the bags on the counter and opened the envelope.
The letter was handwritten. Black ink. Steady hand.
To Kai Renmei,
You do not know me. But I know you. I know what you are doing. I know what you are trying to unlock.
Stop.
The source node was sealed for a reason. The heroines were crippled for a reason. The system was designed to keep them contained. You are breaking the design.
If you continue, people will die. Not just you. Not just them. Everyone in the eastern district. Everyone in the northern district. Everyone within the resonance radius.
This is your only warning.
—A friend
Kai read it twice.
He set it on the table.
Shira looked up from the physio sheet.
"What is that," she said.
He slid it across the table.
She read it.
She read it again.
She set it down.
She looked at him.
"Who sent it," she said.
"I do not know," he said.
She looked at the letter.
"Bring Mira," she said.
---
Mira came out with the board already in her hand.
She had heard the conversation through the Sound Mapping. She knew something had happened.
She sat at the table.
Kai put the letter in front of her.
She ran her fingers across the page. Reading the ink by touch. The pressure of the pen. The rhythm of the handwriting.
She picked up the board.
She wrote: The handwriting is steady. Practiced. Someone who writes a lot of letters. Or someone who wanted this one to be legible.
Shira said: "What else."
Mira wrote: No stamp. Hand-delivered. Someone knows where we live.
Shira looked at Kai.
She said: "The building has a secure entrance."
Kai said: "The code has not changed since we moved in."
Shira looked at the letter.
She said: "Someone knows the code."
Mira wrote: Or someone followed one of us in.
Kai looked at the letter.
He said: "The wording. The source node. The heroines. The system. This is not the Foundation."
Shira said: "No."
Mira wrote: The Foundation wants the node open. They have been suppressing it for profit. This letter wants it sealed. Different motive.
Shira said: "Different faction."
Kai said: "Someone who believes they are saving the world."
---
They discussed it for an hour.
Shira wanted to ignore it. She said: "It is a threat. Threats are meant to scare you into stopping. We do not stop."
Mira wanted to analyze it. She said: "The handwriting. The paper. The ink. There may be something in the materials that tells us who sent it."
Kai wanted to find out who sent it. He said: "Someone knows our address. Someone knows our routine. Someone is watching us."
Shira looked at him.
She said: "You are worried."
He said: "Yes."
She looked at the letter.
She said: "So am I."
---
That afternoon, Kai called Denko.
He read the letter out loud.
Denko was quiet for a moment.
Then he said: "That is not the Foundation."
"I know," Kai said.
"The Foundation has been fighting us legally," Denko said. "This is not legal. This is a threat. Different kind of opponent."
"Can you trace it," Kai asked.
"I can try," Denko said. "Hand-delivered letters are harder than digital. But the paper and ink might have markers. I will send someone to collect it."
"Thank you," Kai said.
"Kai," Denko said. "Be careful. Whoever sent this believes they are right. People who believe they are right are more dangerous than people who know they are wrong."
"I know," Kai said.
He hung up.
---
That evening, Carson came to the apartment.
He read the letter.
He set it down.
He said: "I know who sent this."
Shira looked at him.
"You know," she said.
"I have seen this handwriting before," Carson said. "Eight years ago. When I was still at Vanguard. There was a classification officer who used to send warnings to heroes who were assigned to sensitive dungeons. He believed some dungeons were too dangerous to enter. He would send letters. Anonymous letters. Telling them to refuse the assignment."
Kai said: "What happened to him."
"He was dismissed," Carson said. "Eight years ago. He refused to certify a classification. He said the dungeon was too dangerous. They fired him."
Shira said: "What was his name."
Carson said: "Warden Kess. Former classification officer. A-rank hero. Retired now. No one has seen him in years."
Mira wrote: He knows about the source node.
Carson looked at the board.
"He was one of the original assessors," Carson said. "Thirty-one years ago. He was there when they found the node. He helped design the suppression system."
Shira said: "He believes in it."
Carson said: "He believes he is saving the world."
---
After Carson left, the three of them sat at the table.
The letter was face-up between them.
Shira said: "He knows where we live."
Kai said: "Yes."
Mira wrote: He knows about the investigation.
Shira said: "He knows about the node."
Mira wrote: He believes we are going to destroy the world.
Shira looked at the letter.
She said: "He is wrong."
Mira wrote: He does not think so.
Shira looked at the table.
She said: "What do we do."
Kai looked at both of them.
He said: "We do not stop. We keep going. We find the source node. We find out what is inside. We do not let anyone scare us into stopping."
Shira looked at him.
She said: "And if he attacks."
Kai said: "Then we defend ourselves."
Mira wrote: Together.
Shira looked at the board.
She said: "Together."
---
That night, Kai lay on the couch.
He pressed both palms to the cushion.
Shira was in her room. The form was not running. She was sitting still. Thinking.
Mira was in her room. The RF-7 was playing something low. Not the rain track. Something quieter.
He ran the Resonance Echo.
Shira’s frequency was steady. But underneath it, something new. A tightness. Not fear. Readiness.
Mira’s frequency was steady too. But underneath it, something sharp. Analysis. She was already working on the letter in her head.
He sat with both of them.
The system notification appeared.
BOND LEVEL 6.4. MULTIPLIER 2,000X.
NEW THREAT DETECTED: THE PURISTS.
WARDEN KESS — FORMER CLASSIFICATION OFFICER. A-RANK. RETIRED.
HE KNOWS WHERE YOU LIVE.
HE BELIEVES HE IS SAVING THE WORLD.
HE WILL NOT STOP.
NEITHER WILL YOU.
Kai read it.
He put the phone down.
He looked at the ceiling.
Warden Kess, he thought. You do not know what you are starting.
He closed his eyes.
