Chapter 111: The Lindsay Family’s Fata Mistake
Chapter 111: Chapter 111: The Lindsay Family’s Fata Mistake
The moment Marcus Reed heard footsteps approaching the factory, he struggled to lift his head.
"Xavier?" His eyes widened with hope, but his attempt to rise ended in failure. The torture had left his spine shattered, and he could no longer move the lower half of his body.
All he could manage was to turn his head toward the entrance.
Then he saw the figure standing at the factory gate. It was Xavier.
Marcus wanted to shout with relief, but the instant he opened his mouth, blood poured from it.
His throat was too damaged for him to form a complete sentence.
Before he could try again, the bald man carrying a Tang sword began walking toward Xavier.
He had barely covered ten meters when Xavier calmly raised two fingers.
Two narrow spatial rifts appeared beneath the feet of the men who had tortured Marcus.
Before either of them could react, the cracks swallowed their lower bodies, cutting off their movements in an instant.
Xavier disappeared from where he stood. A flash of sword light swept through the factory.
When the light faded, both kidnappers looked miserable with their body swallowed and only their head visible.
Marcus stared at the scene, unable to comprehend what he had just witnessed. What had happened?
He had barely seen Xavier move, yet two men who had tortured him without mercy were now lying helplessly on the ground.
Before their capture, the two men had openly discussed their strength.
They were both peak Spirit Platform Realm martial artists, powerful enough to crush countless ordinary fighters. Yet Xavier had dealt with them as though they posed no threat whatsoever.
Marcus felt as if he had wandered into a dream.
He had known Xavier since childhood.
Before their marriages, the two of them had been little more than ordinary young men with unremarkable prospects.
Even after Xavier’s luck began to shine at him, he had assumed his friend was merely a low level martial artist who had recently entered the Body Tempering Realm.
How could someone like that suddenly become strong enough to kill two peak Spirit Platform Realm experts in the blink of an eye?
Had a gods possessed his friend?
Marcus was still struggling to make sense of everything when Xavier approached him.
Without wasting time, Xavier took out a Prosperity Pill and carefully placed it in Marcus’s mouth.
The 4th-Grade elixir was renowned for its remarkable healing properties, capable of restoring the injured from the brink of death.
However, considering the extent of Marcus’s injuries, Xavier was not convinced it would be sufficient.
"Wake up, Marcus," he said. "It’s over. You’re safe now."
After checking his friend’s condition, Xavier frowned slightly.
"Even a 4th-Grade Prosperity Pill might not be enough to repair injuries this severe," he murmured.
"I suppose I’ll have to use a 6th-Grade Saint Healing Pill."
He took out the precious elixir and prepared to feed it to Marcus.
That was when Marcus finally snapped out of his daze.
"Xavier! No, Godfather!" Overwhelmed with emotion, he threw his arms around Xavier, tears gathering in his eyes.
Xavier froze for a moment, regretting that he had bothered to save this shameless fellow.
"Godfather, you’ve hidden your true abilities from me all this time!" Marcus exclaimed.
"Get off me. You’re making my skin crawl."
"Godfather! I am extremely grateful!" Marcus immediately tried to kneel, looking as though he intended to worship Xavier on the spot.
Xavier caught him before his knees could touch the ground.
I really preferred you when you were your usual unruly self.
He shook his head helplessly, then examined Marcus from head to toe.
After confirming that his injuries had been completely healed and that he could move normally again, Xavier finally relaxed. At least his friend was safe.
The moment that thought crossed his mind, the anger he had been suppressing began to rise again. If he had been any weaker, he might have arrived only to find Marcus dead.
He would not let the people responsible escape punishment.
However, before he could deal with the remaining matters, Marcus leaned closer and lowered his voice.
"Xavier, tell me the truth," he said. "Are you secretly one of those legendary figures from novels? You know, an emperor who has been reborn or an immortal emperor who has returned to the world?"
Xavier gave him a strange look.
Marcus, however, was far too shocked to care about his reaction.
"Think about it!" he continued.
"We were both eighteen, and neither of us had much going for us before our blind dates. Then, in just a short time, you’ve become powerful enough to kill two peak Spirit Platform Realm martial artists without breaking a sweat. How else am I supposed to explain this?"
While being tortured, he had overheard the two kidnappers discussing their cultivation.
That was how he had learned just how formidable they were.
Now that he had witnessed Xavier’s strength firsthand, he could not reconcile the man before him with the childhood friend he had known for years.
Xavier had apparently decided that there was no point arguing with someone whose imagination had already run wild.
"Stop making things up," he said. "Stay here for a moment. Those two haven’t completely lost consciousness, and I still need to question them."
He patted Marcus on the shoulder before turning toward the two fallen men.
The Bloodthirsty Monk and Ruthless Blade were still alive, but their injuries had left them writhing in agony.
For martial artists of their cultivation, being reduced to such a state was a humiliation as much as it was a physical torment.
Xavier stopped in front of them, his expression hardening.
"Tell me who you are, who sent you, and what you intended to accomplish here," he said.
"If you cooperate, I’ll make your deaths quick."
His manner toward Marcus had been casual, but the rage burning inside him had never faded.
The sight of his childhood friend lying helplessly on the factory floor had been enough to make his blood run cold.
Had Xavier lacked the strength to defeat these men, Marcus would almost certainly have died here.
Someone had deliberately arranged this attack. Xavier intended to find out who was behind it and make them pay for what they had done.
Ruthless Blade clenched his teeth and glared at him.
"Kill me if you want," he snarled. "I won’t tell you anything!"
He had accepted the Lindsay family’s kindness and agreed to repay that debt.
He had no intention of betraying them, even if it cost him his life.
The Bloodthirsty Monk, on the other hand, had no such determination.
"I’ll talk! I’ll tell you everything, so please spare my life!" he cried.
Ruthless Blade turned toward his companion in disbelief.
"Bloodthirsty Monk, you traitor!" he snapped. "How dare you betray the Lindsay family? Have you lost your mind?"
They had agreed beforehand that neither would reveal the Lindsay family’s secrets if their mission failed.
Ruthless Blade had believed his companion shared his resolve. He had been wrong.
The Bloodthirsty Monk sneered at him despite the pain twisting his face.
"Of course I’ll talk," he said. "I want to live!"
He had only recently found someone he truly loved, barely two and a half months ago.
He had no intention of throwing away his life for a family that had sent him on a dangerous mission.
"As far as I’m concerned, whatever debt I owed the Lindsay family disappeared the moment they sent us here," he continued, his expression darkening.
"That bastard Reginald Lindsay told us we would only be dealing with ordinary people. Instead, we ran into someone capable of killing us before we could even react. What else could this be but a trap?"
Ruthless Blade’s face twisted with fury, but before he could respond, Xavier moved.
A sharp sword flash crossed the space between them.
Ruthless Blade’s head separated from his body before he could utter another word.
Xavier had no interest in listening to a pointless argument between two kidnappers.
One had chosen silence, while the other was willing to cooperate. That was all he needed to know.
He turned his attention to the Bloodthirsty Monk.
"You said the Lindsay family sent you," he said.
"Do you mean the Lindsay family based in Valemont? What exactly were they planning, and did they send anyone else with you?"
The Bloodthirsty Monk nodded quickly.
"Yes, that’s the family I mean," he said.
His eyes shifted toward the Saint Healing Pill Xavier had taken out earlier. An idea occurred to him, and he tried to take advantage of the opportunity.
"Hero Xavier, if you give me that Saint Healing Pill, I’ll tell you everything I know," he said.
He had watched Xavier prepare to use the 6th-Grade elixir on Marcus. Surely, someone who possessed such a precious treasure could spare one for him.
But he had barely finished speaking when Xavier’s fist struck his face.
The blow sent him flying several meters.
He crashed through a wall before finally landing amid the debris, coughing up blood.
Xavier approached him with his sword in hand, his patience exhausted.
"You’re in no position to negotiate with me," he said. "Tell me everything, or I’ll kill you right here."
The blade came to rest against the Bloodthirsty Monk’s neck.
