Chapter 76: Abyss Anchor
Chapter 76: Chapter 76: Abyss Anchor
The embargo against the Investment Guild didn’t end with a formal treaty. It ended in a panicked landslide.
By noon the next day, the news of Julian Vane’s humiliating retreat had leaked across Genesis City. When the local press discovered that the Crimson Lotus’s corporate accounts had been entirely liquidated overnight, the remaining corrupt Guilds realized they were backing a dead horse.
The delivery trucks started arriving at the TIG headquarters before the rain even stopped.
Donald sat behind the newly replaced mahogany desk in the Guild Master’s office, watching the camera feeds on his digital tablet. Armored trucks were unloading crates of high-grade monster cores, medical supplies, and raw forging materials into the secure loading docks.
"They’re practically begging us to take their supply contracts now," Aris Thorne said, pacing in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows. The Oracle looked exhausted but deeply satisfied. "The Mayor’s office called twice this morning offering tax incentives. You didn’t just break the siege, Donald. You broke the old regime."
"Keep the contracts short-term," Donald said, setting the tablet down. "And freeze out anyone who actively participated in Vane’s blockade. We don’t reward loyalty that only shows up after we’ve already won."
Aris nodded sharply. "I’ll handle the paperwork. Are you seriously leaving for the Capital today? The ink on the Abyssal Charter transfer isn’t even dry yet."
"Vane has something that belongs to one of my operatives," Donald said evenly. "We’re going to collect it."
Aris didn’t argue. She had long since realized that trying to stop the Investor was a waste of breath. She picked up her briefcase and walked out, leaving Donald alone in the office.
Donald leaned back in his chair and unzipped his jacket. Nyx, who had been curled up on the leather sofa, fluttered over on her shadowy, gold-tipped wings and landed gracefully on his desk. She began batting playfully at a platinum pen.
Donald pulled up his internal interface. Hitting Level 20 was a massive milestone.

The rush of new, permanent physical density settled into his bones with a deep, satisfying heat.
The heavy oak doors opened. Evelyn and Sylvia walked into the office.
Evelyn was wearing a sleek, dark trench coat over her urban combat gear, looking like a heavily armed executive. Sylvia had her black half-mask pulled down, her violet eyes bright and sharply focused. The A-Rank assassin looked rested for the first time in a year, the crushing weight of the magical contract permanently lifted from her shoulders.
"Garrick finished breaking down the remains of your weapon," Sylvia reported, stopping in front of the desk. She placed a heavy, matte-black metallic case on the mahogany wood. "He managed to salvage the thunder core, but the titanium piston was ruined. So, he improvised using the magma-forged armor plating we stripped from the Abyssal Warlord."
Donald popped the latches and opened the case.
Inside rested an absolute masterpiece of violent engineering. The new Pile Bunker was sleeker, plated in jagged, dark purple abyssal steel. The piston chamber glowed with a volatile mixture of blue electrical energy and deep crimson hellfire.
Donald pulled it out and strapped it to his left forearm. The weight was perfectly balanced, thrumming with raw, terrifying power.
[Item: Type-7 ’Abyssal Impact’ Pile Bunker]
[Rank: A-Rank]
[Effect: Fires a piston forged from dimensional steel. Delivers catastrophic kinetic trauma accompanied by a dual-elemental (Lightning/Hellfire) detonation. Passively drains ambient mana to self-repair.]
"Tell Garrick he just earned a massive bonus," Donald smiled, admiring the gauntlet.
"I’ll let him know," Evelyn said, leaning against the edge of the desk. She looked at the heavy, grapefruit-sized boss core sitting next to Donald’s tablet. The core pulsed with dark purple and bright gold mana. "Garrick tried to appraise that core this morning. He said it nearly blinded him. It’s too dense. The Association scanners wouldn’t even be able to classify it."
"That’s because it isn’t a monster core," Donald said.
The relaxed atmosphere in the room instantly vanished. Sylvia frowned, stepping closer. "What do you mean? It dropped from the boss."
"I used my system to appraise it on the ride back," Donald explained. His golden [Valuation Eye] flickered as he looked at the pulsing sphere. "This is a Dimensional Tear Anchor. It’s a localized bridgehead."
Donald looked up at Evelyn and Sylvia, his expression turning deadly serious.
"The dungeons aren’t natural magical phenomena, Evie. They’re portals," Donald revealed, reading the classified lore the System had provided him. "They connect Earth to a dimension ruled by an alliance called the Circle of Demon Kings. The monsters we’ve been fighting for decades? They’re just the scouting parties. They are preparing to conquer Earth and harvest its population for mana."
Evelyn stared at the core, her S-Rank aura violently flaring in the quiet office as the horrifying truth set in. "The Abyssal Warlord... he was a general for an invading army."
"Exactly," Donald said. "But the invasion isn’t just brute force. It’s political."
Sylvia’s violet eyes widened as she connected the dots. Her training as an assassin made her instantly suspicious of coincidences. "Julian Vane. Dragonheart didn’t just want the dungeon for the economy. They invoked a Royal Charter to legally lock the Association out of the Abyssal Gate."
"Vane was trying to protect the bridgehead," Donald confirmed coldly. "He brought twenty men to officially secure the perimeter so nobody else would go down there and see the army forming. Dragonheart isn’t just corrupt. They’re compromised. I think one of the Five Demon Kings is holding Julian Vane’s leash."
The silence in the room was deafening. The scope of the war they had just walked into had exponentially expanded. They weren’t just fighting rival Awakeners anymore. They were fighting a shadow invasion at the highest levels of the government.
"If Julian Vane is taking orders from a Demon King," Sylvia whispered, her voice trembling slightly, "and he’s holding my little brother in the Dragonheart Spire..."
Sylvia gripped the edge of the desk. The sheer, suffocating terror of what might be happening to her brother in a compromised Capital stronghold threatened to crack her composure.
Donald reached across the desk. He placed his right hand firmly over Sylvia’s trembling fingers.
The quiet, steady warmth of his touch instantly grounded her. Sylvia looked up, her violet eyes meeting the calm, absolute confidence radiating from his dark eyes behind the gold mask.
"We are going to get him out, Sylvia," Donald promised, his voice an unwavering anchor. "Today. The Capital is scrambling right now. They lost the gate, they lost Malcor, and they lost their Vanguard General. They think we’re going to sit here and build our defenses. They aren’t expecting a counter-attack."
Evelyn watched the exchange. The Valkyrie didn’t feel a shred of jealousy. She saw the way Sylvia looked at Donald—the exact same way Evelyn had looked at him in the alleyway when he handed her a healing potion and bought her life back. She reached out and placed her hand over Sylvia’s other hand.
"We’re a Guild now," Evelyn said softly, offering the assassin a fierce, sisterly smile. "We protect our own. We tear the Dragonheart Spire down brick by brick if we have to."
Sylvia looked between the demigod and the Investor. For the first time in a very long time, she didn’t feel like a discarded ghost. She felt like she belonged somewhere.
She took a deep, steadying breath, nodding sharply. The vulnerability vanished, replaced by the lethal focus of an A-Rank operative.
"My brother’s name is Leo," Sylvia said, tapping a quick sequence into Donald’s digital tablet to pull up a map of the Capital. "He’s ten years old. Julian Vane keeps him in the Aegis Detention Block—a highly secure, subterranean holding facility directly beneath the Dragonheart Spire. It’s guarded by elite Sentinels and heavy anti-magic wards."
"Wards don’t work on kinetic force," Evelyn noted, cracking her knuckles.
"And Sentinels can’t guard what they can’t see," Donald added, glancing at Nyx. The winged cat let out a low, predatory trill.
Donald stood up from the desk, grabbing his dark tactical jacket. He slipped it on, concealing the heavy, purple-and-black Abyssal Impact gauntlet beneath his sleeve.
"The private jet is waiting on the tarmac," Donald said, walking toward the heavy oak doors. "Let’s go show the Capital what a hostile takeover actually looks like."
