Chapter 42: Chapter 42: What lurks in the shadows

The air in the generator room had finally begun to settle, though the scent of ozone, burnt blood, and ozone-heavy magic lingered thick in the subterranean quiet.

Donald leaned back against the shattered concrete wall, watching as the last lingering wisps of white flame from his [Purifying Touch] dissolved into the air. His shoulder was completely restored, the skin smooth and fresh where a lethal blood-spike had torn through only minutes prior. His shirt was a ruined, blood-soaked rag, but the power surging through his core felt cleaner and denser than it ever had before.

Beside him, Evelyn pulled the heavy, dark-steel plates of her Obsidian Van-Armour back over her shoulders. The micro-mesh hummed softly as the magnetic clasps snapped into place, sealing securely over her skin. The battle-hardened Vanguard was back, but as she turned her head to look at him, the soft, undeniable warmth in her deep blue eyes remained.

"Valerius was their second-in-command," Evelyn said, her voice low as she fastened her blade back to her hip. "Wildfire doesn’t have the numerical depth to bounce back from losing an A-Rank enforcer and a full B-Rank execution squad in a single night. Their local branch in this sector is effectively dead. Eradicated."

Donald wiped a smear of soot from his cheek with the back of his hand, a slow, calculated smile spreading across his face. "Which means the contract on you is officially stalled. No low-level assassin is going to touch a hit that ate Lord Valerius alive."

"For now," Evelyn corrected softly, stepping closer to him and resting a hand lightly against his chest. She leaned in, pressing her forehead against his. "Which means we can finally get out of these damn subterranean rat holes. No more abandoned bunkers, Donald. I want a proper place. A real apartment with windows, a lock that doesn’t require a pneumatic pile bunker, and a bed that isn’t made of canvas."

Donald chuckled, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her flush against him for a quiet moment. "Consider it done. I’ve got the funds in my System reserve. We’ll find a penthouse or a secure high-rise in the upper district tomorrow. A real base of operations."

His expression darkened slightly as he looked past her, toward the smoldering ash on the concrete floor.

"But Wildfire was just the weapon," Donald added quietly, his eyes narrowing. "Eventually, we’re going to have to deal with the person who bought the blade."

Evelyn’s body stiffened slightly under his hand, her jaw setting into a tight, murderous line. "Sterling."

"Your old Guild Master won’t sit on his hands forever," Donald said, his voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying tone of absolute certainty. "He tried to prune you through the assassins because he wanted it clean. When he realizes Wildfire failed, he’s going to double down. Sooner or later, he’ll come himself."

Evelyn looked up into Donald’s eyes, her grip on his waist tightening. She didn’t see fear in him; she only saw the cold, unyielding resolve of a man who treated every threat as a calculated investment to be broken and acquired.

"Let him come," Evelyn whispered, a dark, lethal edge returning to her voice. "We’ll be waiting." 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂

Fifty miles away, suspended high above the smog and neon glitter of the metropolitan skyline, the top floor of the Apex Tower rested in serene, undisturbed luxury.

The master suite was a sprawling expanse of polished black marble, floor-to-ceiling glass, and soft, ambient golden light. Rain lashed gently against the reinforced glass outside, but inside, the air was warm, scented with expensive jasmine and fresh linen.

In the center of the room sat a massive, custom-built king bed draped in dark crimson silk.

Sterling, the Guild Master of the Iron Vanguard Guild, lay propped up against a mountain of plush pillows. He was a broad-shouldered man in his late thirties, his body scarred and muscular, possessing the quiet, suffocating presence of an established High Awakener.

Slept around him were three strikingly naked beautiful escorts, their soft, bare forms tangled in the silk sheets.

The quietness was shattered by the sharp, rhythmic vibration of an encrypted phone resting on the dark mahogany nightstand.

Sterling didn’t flinch. His eyes opened instantly—cold, sharp gray eyes that held zero trace of sleepiness. He reached out with a thick, calloused hand, picking up the sleek black device, and slid the thumb-sensor to accept the call.

He raised it to his ear without speaking a word.

"Guild Master," a trembling, hushed voice echoed through the encrypted line. It was his chief intelligence officer, speaking in a frantic whisper. "We... we have a catastrophic update from the Sub-Sector 7 deployment."

Sterling’s brow creased slightly. "Report."

"The Wildfire Syndicate’s operation failed, sir," the officer stammered, swallows audibly over the receiver. "It’s a total loss. The entire vanguard squad, the blood-mage, the initiates... and Lord Valerius. All confirmed dead. Their localized bunker was completely wiped out. Wildfire’s regional command structure has collapsed."

Silence fell over the plush bedroom.

Sterling didn’t burst into a rage. He didn’t yell. He simply sat up slowly, the silk sheets sliding down his broad, scarred chest. The three women beside him stirred faintly, but remained asleep.

Wildfire was one of the most lethal shadow organizations in the region. Valerius was an A-Rank High Vampire who had slaughtered entire squads of veteran Awakeners without breaking a sweat. And now, an entire branch had been erased off the board in a single evening.

Sterling shifted his gaze toward the floor-to-ceiling glass, looking out over the sprawling, rain-slicked city below.

"An injured tiger..." Sterling murmured, his deep, resonant voice laced with a dangerous mixture of cold intrigue and budding irritation, "...is still a tiger after all."

He was referring to Evelyn. He had stripped her rank, stolen her credentials, and left her for dead in the Obsidian Vault. Yet somehow, she had survived. She had found an unknown catalyst, healed her core, clawed her way back from the brink, and was now chewing through A-Rank executioners like scrap metal.

Sterling’s fingers slowly tightened around the encrypted smartphone.

CREAK—CRACK.

Without an ounce of visible effort, his hands flexed. The reinforced titanium casing of the high-end phone groaned under the sudden, terrifying density of his physical strength. Plastic shattered, the glass screen spider-webbed into thousands of fragments, and dark smoke hissed from the crushed battery.

He squeezed harder, reducing the million-Credits piece of military technology into a tangled, useless ball of crushed metal and wires, dropping the ruined scrap onto the marble floor with a dull thud.

Sterling swung his legs over the edge of the bed, stepping onto the cold marble, his cold gray eyes reflecting the distant city lights.

"It seems," Sterling whispered to the empty room, "I will have to handle this myself."
