Chapter 39: Chapter 39: The Afterglow Interrupted

The Sub-Level 4 generator room was perfectly still. The heavy, rhythmic panting of their breath had finally slowed, replaced by a profound, suffocating silence. The golden glow of the System notification had faded from Donald’s vision, leaving only the dim blue hum of the dormant mana-batteries to illuminate the concrete walls.

Donald lay heavily on top of Evelyn, his broad chest resting against her soft curves. He was completely drained, his body floating in the absolute euphoria of the afterglow. The air smelled of sweat, ozone, and sex.

He didn’t want to move. Ever.

Beneath him, Evelyn let out a long, shuddering sigh of pure contentment. She traced her fingers lightly through his hair, her touch impossibly gentle for a woman who had just violently slaughtered an execution squad.

"I don’t think," Evelyn murmured, her voice a soft, husky rumble against his ear, "I’ve ever felt my mana spin like this. It feels like I swallowed a live wire."

"That’s just... a synergy effect," Donald mumbled into her neck, pressing a soft kiss against her pulse point, deliberately keeping the specifics of his System vague. "As long as we’re touching, our mana loops. We’re a closed circuit."

Evelyn chuckled, a rich, vibrant sound that vibrated against his chest. "Whatever your secret class actually is, kid, it really doesn’t play fair, does it?"

"I told you," Donald smiled lazily, lifting his head to look down into her deep blue eyes. "I just have a good eye for potential. You were undervalued, Evelyn."

Evelyn’s smile softened into something deeply affectionate. She didn’t push for answers. She cupped his cheek, her thumb brushing over his jawline.

Donald leaned into her touch, completely hypnotized by the raw, beautiful intimacy of the moment. They were buried deep underground, surrounded by a mountain of rubble and the ashes of their enemies, but right now, it felt like they were the only two people left in the entire world.

He lowered his head, capturing her lips in a slow, deep kiss. Evelyn sighed into his mouth, her hands sliding down his back to pull him closer. The hidden [Dual-Cultivation Synergy] immediately flared in their chests, responding to their passion, pushing their combined stats higher and higher.

It was perfect. It was peaceful.

And then, the world violently ended.

SKREEEEEEEEEEEEE!

The sound was apocalyptic. It wasn’t the hydraulic hiss of the blast doors being bypassed, or the sizzling crackle of acid melting metal. It was the horrific, shrieking screech of raw, unfathomable kinetic force physically tearing a foot-thick steel vault door off its reinforced hinges.

The sound vibrated through the floor so violently that Donald felt it in his teeth.

The heavy steel door of the generator room didn’t just open; it imploded. It folded inward like cheap tin, ripping away from the concrete frame and violently slamming into the far wall, kicking up a massive cloud of dust and debris.

The romantic, suffocating tension in the room instantly died, replaced by the freezing, paralyzing grip of absolute terror.

Donald rolled off the canvas cot, moving faster than his Level 8 stats should have allowed, completely driven by pure adrenaline. He scooped his pants off the floor, yanking them up and buckling them in a single, fluid motion.

Evelyn didn’t even hesitate to dress. She vaulted off the bed, entirely naked, and lunged across the concrete floor to where the Bloodhound’s Fang rested against the wall. The moment her hand closed around the cursed hilt, her B-Rank aura flared to life in a blinding, protective blue shell around her body.

They spun around, dropping into synchronized combat stances, facing the gaping, smoking hole where the vault door used to be.

The dust slowly settled, revealing a silhouette standing in the ruined doorway.

The temperature in the generator room plummeted instantly. The air grew so cold that frost began to form on the edges of the dormant mana-batteries. The blue ambient light seemed to dim, physically suppressed by the sheer, suffocating density of the hostile mana flooding the room.

Donald activated his [Valuation Eye], but he didn’t need the System to tell him they were staring at death.

A tall man stepped over the ruined threshold. He didn’t wear the charred, tactical gray cloaks of the Wildfire execution squad. He wore a pristine, impeccably tailored black suit with a high crimson collar. His skin was pale as marble, and his eyes were solid, glowing pools of liquid blood.

He didn’t carry a weapon. He didn’t need one. His mere presence was a weapon. The air around him warped and rippled with the sheer weight of his aura.

[CRITICAL THREAT DETECTED!]

[Target: Lord Valerius, The Red Shadow.]

[Title: Second-in-Command, Wildfire Syndicate.]

[Race: High Vampire.]

[Rank: A-Rank (Level 62)]

[System Warning: Disparity in combat power is absolute. Survival Probability: < 1%. Flee immediately.]

Donald stared at the golden text, his heart stopping completely in his chest. Level 62. An A-Rank High Vampire. This wasn’t a simple assassin. This was a walking calamity.

Lord Valerius slowly surveyed the small room, his glowing crimson eyes sweeping over the dormant generators, the canvas cot, and finally resting on Donald and Evelyn.

He didn’t look angry. He looked profoundly, insultingly bored.

"Twelve initiates," Valerius spoke. His voice was smooth, cultured, and resonated with a hypnotic cadence that made Donald’s head spin. "Two veterans, specialists. A B-Rank blood-mist dispersion. All to eliminate a single, rogue Awakener."

Valerius tilted his head, his gaze settling heavily on Evelyn, completely unbothered by her nakedness.

"Sterling assured us you were a mere anomaly, Miss Vance," the High Vampire continued, adjusting his perfectly tailored cuffs. "A lucky survivor who needed to be quietly pruned before you caused a scene. Yet, I find my entire vanguard buried under a mountain of scrap metal, my blood-mage incinerated, and the two of you... copulating in a generator room."

Valerius stepped fully into the room. The concrete cracked slightly under his polished leather shoes.

"I am Lord Valerius," he announced, the air growing thicker with every word. "And I have come to correct this administrative error personally."

Evelyn didn’t say a word. The terror was completely gone from her face, replaced by the absolute, suicidal focus of a cornered predator.

"Donald," Evelyn whispered, her voice tight and deadly calm. "Get the cannon."

Donald didn’t move toward his Pile Bunker. It was lying against the far wall, too far away. Even if he grabbed it, a C-Rank pneumatic spike wouldn’t scratch an A-Rank High Vampire.

He stepped directly to Evelyn’s side, reaching out and grabbing her left hand. He laced his fingers tightly with hers.

The moment their skin connected, the generator room violently shook.

A blinding, dual-colored pillar of light erupted around them—Evelyn’s radiant blue Vanguard aura instantly merging with Donald’s brilliant golden Investor mana. The hidden [Dual-Cultivation Synergy] activated in full force.

[Dual-Cultivation Active!]

[Mana Cores Linked. Base Stats Multiplied by 300%.]

The suffocating, freezing pressure of the High Vampire’s aura was suddenly shoved back, replaced by the roaring, infinite heat of their combined power. Evelyn’s bare skin glowed with raw kinetic energy, her muscles coiling with impossible strength. Donald felt his Level 8 stats completely shatter their limits, his body thrumming with the borrowed, multiplied power of a B-Rank Vanguard.

Lord Valerius stopped adjusting his cuffs. His glowing crimson eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his aristocratic features.

"Fascinating," the High Vampire murmured, finally raising a pale hand, his long fingernails lengthening into jagged, black claws. "A symbiotic mana loop. Let us see how much pressure it takes to break it."
