Chapter 102: Chapter 102: Nineteen Minutes

[Ceremony of Seals: Doors open. Closing in 19:40.]

The window appeared in the corner of Donald’s vision as the third bell finished ringing. He didn’t know where the System had gotten the number from. He didn’t stop to ask.

He put his wine glass down.

"You moved the Ceremony," he said, "because you thought I’d send people into the Archive tomorrow."

"I moved it because it was the wise thing to do." Harrow leaned back in his chair. "If you had people waiting for tomorrow, they’re sitting in a hotel room with nothing to do. If you didn’t, I’ve lost nothing but a good night’s sleep for six old men."

He was watching Donald’s hands. Donald kept them on the table.

There was one thing in this room the wards didn’t own.

Under the table, out of Harrow’s sight, Donald turned his left palm down toward the floor and reached for the skill he had used only once, on the day he freed Sylvia.

[Familia Summoning: Recall familiar ’Nyx’?]

Yes.

Two streets away, in the Kingsgate suite, Nyx would vanish from Sylvia’s shoulder in a puff of black smoke.

A second later, something small and warm pressed against his ankle under the tablecloth.

[Familiar ’Nyx’ recalled.]

Donald kept his eyes on Harrow. "If I asked for more time to think about your offer, would you give it to me?"

"Of course," Harrow said. "Take all the time you need. The offer stands until the end of the week."

Donald dropped his left hand below the table edge, as if to rest it on his knee. His fingers found Nyx’s head. He pressed two fingers flat against the top of her skull, the way he did when he wanted her to look at something, and he thought of the Archive plans spread across the War Room table. The seventh floor. The open doors. The bell.

He didn’t know whether a familiar could carry a thought. He’d never tried.

Nyx went still under his hand. Then she turned to smoke and was gone, through the floor.

[Familiar ’Nyx’ dispatched. Bond strain: low.]

Harrow hadn’t looked down.

"You’re thinking about it," Harrow said. "Good. Most men refuse at once out of pride, and then spend the rest of their lives regretting it."

"I’m thinking about your ring," Donald said.

Harrow’s smile stayed in place. "You keep coming back to that."

"Because it’s the most interesting thing at this table." Donald looked at the black stone. "You can’t take it off. You’ve worn it for, what, twenty-two years? That’s how long you’ve held the First Seat. Since the day you put it on, you haven’t lost a single negotiation." He kept his voice low. "Because the one doing the negotiating isn’t you."

[Doors closing in 17:58.]

Harrow said nothing. His right hand had moved back on top of the table. The ring sat between them in the firelight.

"I can’t free you from here," Donald said. "Not tonight. You’d have to be in my Guild. And the moment you agreed to that, your master would know."

"Yes," Harrow said quietly. "He would."

It was the first true thing he’d said all evening. Donald didn’t need Valuation Eye to see it.

---

In the Kingsgate suite, Nyx came up out of the floor in the middle of the room and landed on the open Archive plans on the table.

Sylvia was on her feet before the smoke cleared. "Where is he? Is he hurt?"

Nyx didn’t answer. Nyx couldn’t. She walked across the plans, sat down on the drawing of the seventh floor, and put one paw on the Archive door.

Then she looked up at the window, toward the Council Hall, and hissed.

Damian was already at the window. Far below, across the Square, the seven towers of the Council Hall had lamps burning in their top windows. All of them except one.

"The bell," Damian said. "I heard it. I thought it was the hour." His face went gray. "It was the Ceremony. He moved it."

"Now?" Helena was off the bed. "It’s happening now?"

"Twenty minutes from the first bell," Damian said. "That was two minutes ago. Maybe three."

Sylvia grabbed Helena’s wrist.

"Hold your core in," she said. "Small. Like the coin. Don’t let go of it no matter what you see."

"I know," Helena said.

"Damian. The gallery."

"Go," Damian said. "I’ll be above the door in four minutes."

Sylvia and Helena dropped into the floor. Nyx went with them.

---

They came up in the dark under the arch of the Council Hall’s east gate. A guard stood ten feet away, looking out at the Square. He didn’t turn.

[Shade Step]

Sylvia moved them both to the shadow of a pillar inside the courtyard. Then another, at the foot of the stairs. Then a third, inside the Hall itself, under a long table in an empty corridor.

Helena was shaking and breathing through her teeth. Her core stayed small.

"Stairs," Sylvia breathed. "Seven floors down. I can’t Shade Step that far. We go through the shadow."

They sank.

The descent was slow. Every floor had wards across the stairwell, the real ones Garrick had copied in the Training Matrix. Sylvia threaded through them at the very edge of the shadow, where the light from the ward lamps barely touched. Helena held onto her wrist and held her core in her fist, the way she’d practiced.

Fifth floor. Sixth.

[Doors closing in 11:20.]

The seventh floor opened out into a long, round hall lit by cold white lamps. At the far end stood the Archive doors, twenty feet tall and made of pale stone. They were wide open. Through them, Sylvia could see rows of gray shelves running back into the dark, further than the eye could follow.

In front of the doors, six Guild Masters in Council robes stood in a half-circle with papers in their hands, waiting their turn to file. Beside them, a thin gray-haired man in a clerk’s coat held a heavy brass key in both hands and stared at the floor. Peter Lowe. He looked terrified.

And at the side of the doors, in silver Archive armor, stood a broad man with a short beard and a heavy halberd resting against his shoulder.

[Target: Roderick Hale]

[Title: Warden of Seals]

[Class: Guardian (A-Rank)]

[Level: 63]

Sylvia felt Helena’s grip on her wrist tighten until it hurt.

"Small," Sylvia whispered. "Small."

Helena’s core flickered. Then it held.

Sylvia moved along the edge of the round hall, keeping to the shadow under the gallery. Above them, in the gallery railing, she felt a cold, quiet presence settle into place. Damian.

The Guild Masters were filing their papers one at a time. Each one stepped through the doors, set a sealed box on a cart, and came back out. Nobody went deeper than the first row of shelves.

Sylvia waited until the fourth Master walked through. His shadow stretched long behind him in the white lamplight, all the way back to the gallery wall.

She stepped into it.

[Shade Step]

They came out of his shadow on the other side of the doors, on the inside of the Archive, behind the first row of shelves. Nobody turned.

Helena let out a breath that she had been holding for a full minute.

"Which way?" Sylvia whispered.

Helena looked at the nearest shelf. The gray boxes were marked with Council codes, rows of numbers and letters stamped into small brass plates. She read three of them, then four, and her lips moved.

"Gate theory is Section Nine," she whispered. "Sealed by Dragonheart. Filed three years ago." She pointed down a long aisle to the left. "That way. Nine-D. Fourth row."

[Doors closing in 7:05.]

They moved down the aisle in the shadow under the bottom shelves. Rows and rows of gray boxes went by over their heads.

Nine-A. Nine-B. Nine-C.

Nine-D.

Helena stopped. She was looking at a box on the third shelf. It was a little larger than the others. Its brass plate had a Dragonheart seal next to the code.

Below the code, someone had scratched three letters into the brass by hand. Helena knew the handwriting. She had known it for nineteen years.

H. C. T.

Thomas had marked her boxes like that in their own lab. Helena, Cross, Thomas. So she would always know her own work.

Helena made a small sound.

Her core opened.

It wasn’t much. It was only for a second. But in a room built to feel exactly that kind of thing, a second was enough.

The nearest ward lamp on the ceiling turned red.

Out at the front of the Archive, Roderick Hale lifted his head.
