Investing In Crippled Heroine and Villainess Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 53: The Midnight Vault
Professor Aldyn pinned the red scroll to the center stone board with a sharp thud.
A swarm of cadets rushed forward from the wooden tables, boots stomping against the flagstones.
Cedric Vale stayed on the upper platform, leaning over the stone railing with his arms crossed.
His smirk widened as the crowd parted to let us through.
Rook stood on his toes, his brown eyes scanning down the inked bracket lines.
"There," Rook whispered, his voice tightening. "Sector 4, Ring Three. Opening match."
I looked at the black ink.
My name sat right across from Cedric Vale.
"Ring Three," Isolde said, her pale purple eyes narrowing as she looked at the list. "The underground ring with the sunken floor."
’The ring with the four-times gravity trap.’
’Cedric thinks he set up the perfect slaughter.’
Cedric leaned forward, calling out across the hall so every noble cadet could hear.
"I hope you have strong knees, Voss!" Cedric shouted, laughing with the silver-badge boys beside him. "The floor on Ring Three gets very heavy for trash!"
Murmurs rippled through the dining hall.
Seraphina took half a step forward, placing herself slightly in front of me with cold royal poise.
Her golden amber eyes stared straight at Cedric, her voice cutting through the noise like glass.
"A knight who brags before drawing his steel usually ends up face down in the dirt, Lord Vale."
Cedric’s smile froze.
Isolde’s shadow twitched under our bench, dark tendrils creeping outward across the floor.
"Let him talk," I said, keeping my hands in my coat pockets and smiling. "Barking dogs rarely bite."
I turned away from the board, walking back toward the exit arch with Seraphina, Isolde, and Rook.
Cedric’s face burned red as the common cadets watched him choke on his own words.
---
That evening, the sun dipped low behind the academy battlements, throwing long orange shadows across our dorm room.
Rook sat on a wooden stool near our desk, pointing at a rough charcoal map he had drawn on brown paper.
"Wing 3 is the Forbidden Vault building," Rook said, keeping his voice low. "The upper floors hold old spell scrolls, but the basement has the gravity drill room."
"How heavy does the floor dial go?" I asked, leaning over the desk.
"Up to five times normal weight," Rook answered, wiping sweat from his temple. "Noble battle masters use it to test heavy armor. But the guards lock the iron doors at dusk."
"The guard shift changes at midnight," Isolde said from the window sill.
She held a small black throwing pin between her fingers, spinning it over her knuckles.
"Guard Captain Dain takes the outer wall at twelve," Isolde continued. "The basement corridor stays dark for twenty minutes."
"That is all the time we need," I said.
Seraphina set down her cup of herbal tea, looking at me with quiet concern.
She reached across the table, her fingers brushing the back of my hand.
"Training under five-times gravity in one night is dangerous, Cassian," Seraphina said softly. "The strain on your leg muscles could tear tendons before tomorrow’s duel."
"I have to move freely when Cedric triggers the trap," I told her, squeezing her hand. "If I rely on raw magic to push through, the noble judges will call it a foul. I need my body to move without thinking."
’No shortcuts.’
’If I want to break Cedric’s sword tomorrow, I need real speed.’
Isolde stood up, her dark coat rustling as she walked over to my side.
She rested two fingers against my belt, anchoring her steps while her vision adjusted in the dim room.
"Then we go at midnight," Isolde said, a sharp smile touching her lips. "I will handle the shadows in the hall."
---
Dong. Dong. Dong.
The midnight bell chimed across the quad, deep and slow.
The three of us slipped out of the Class A dorm building, moving through the cold night air like three dark coats.
Isolde raised her left hand.
A thin veil of cold shadow wrapped around our boots, swallowing the sound of our footsteps on the gravel path.
Wing 3 rose ahead like a giant stone block.
Two iron lanterns hung by the arched entrance, casting dim yellow light over the empty doorway.
The guard post was clear.
We moved down the spiral stone steps into the deep basement.
The air grew thick and cold, smelling of old dust and damp rock.
At the end of the long passage stood a heavy iron door with a brass wheel lock.
Isolde slipped a thin shadow needle into the keyhole.
Click.
The heavy bolts slid back.
I pushed the door open, stepping into a wide, round stone chamber.
Carved deep into the floor was a massive circle of dark runes, glowing with a faint gray light.
In the center of the wall stood a brass control lever with five numbered notches.
"This is it," I said, unbuckling my heavy wool coat and tossing it to the bench.
Seraphina took post by the inner arch, her Phoenix fire warming her fingertips to keep watch.
Isolde melted into the shadow beside the doorway, locking her senses onto the corridor outside.
I stepped into the center of the rune circle and pulled the lever to notch three.
Hum!
The air instantly thickened.
A crushing weight slammed down onto my shoulders, pressing down on my skull and chest like three sacks of wet sand.
My knees bent slightly under the load.
’Heavy.’
’Good.’
I took a deep breath, circulating the cold void energy from my Abyssal Core down through my hips, knees, and ankles.
Instead of fighting the gravity with raw spell blasts, I let the weight sink into the void inside me, using the downward pull to root my feet to the stone.
Step.
My right boot slid forward through the thick air.
Step.
My left boot followed.
"Move it to notch four," I said, wiping a drop of blood from my nose with the back of my hand.
Seraphina’s breath caught in her throat.
She stepped toward the lever, her hand hesitating over the cold brass.
"Cassian, your nose is bleeding," she said, her amber eyes filled with sharp worry.
"Pull it, Seraphina," I smiled through the grit of my teeth. "I am fine."
She tightened her jaw, trusting my words, and clicked the lever down into the fourth notch.
Crack!
The stone floor groaned beneath my boots.
The pressure doubled instantly.
My spine compressed with a dull ache, and my chest felt like an iron band was wrapped tight around my ribs.
’Do not fight the weight.’
’Become the void.’
’Empty the stride.’
I dropped my center of gravity, bending my knees and letting the cold void mana coat the soles of my feet.
I pushed off the flagstones.
Whoosh!
My body cut through the heavy air like a ghost sliding across ice.
No drag.
No heavy thud.
Just clean, frictionless glide.
I crossed the entire fifteen-foot circle in a fraction of a second, stopping dead without making a single sound.
Ding!

I let out a long breath, a plume of warm steam rising into the cold cellar air.
Seraphina pushed the brass lever back to zero, and the crushing pressure vanished into thin air.
I walked to the wooden bench and sat down, my legs burning with good, honest muscle fatigue.
Seraphina came over immediately, pulling a soft cloth from her pocket and wiping the sweat and blood from my face.
Her touch was warm and steady.
"You move like wind in the dark," Seraphina whispered, looking into my eyes with a proud smile. "Cedric will never touch you."
"He will never see it coming," I laughed softly, catching her fingers and kissing her palm.
Across the room, Isolde did not join us at the bench.
She stood facing the far back wall, her pale purple eyes wide in the gloom.
Her left hand reached out, her fingers trembling slightly as her shadow stretched toward the mortar.
"Cassian," Isolde called out, her voice sharp and tense.
I stood up from the bench, walking over to her side. "What is it?"
"The stone wall," Isolde whispered, pressing her fingers against a dark vertical seam behind the weapon rack. "It is not solid rock."
She pulled her hand back, and I saw a thin line of pitch-black mana pulsing between the stone blocks.
My Abyssal Core gave a sudden, violent thud in my chest.
Ding!

`[Ancient Void Seal Found Behind Wall]`
’There is an entire hidden room behind this chamber.’
Isolde looked at me, her dark shadow rising like a wall behind us. "Should I break the seal?"
