Chapter 155: Operation Closed Fist

  • Next Chapter

House Five met all three conditions at 21:17.

The civilian floor emptied. Its contract anchor activated. Mordecai’s local manager entered the building.

Damien raised two fingers. Nova Corps moved. Hamari fired first from eight hundred meters out. One Stillpoint round broke the rooftop alarm without touching the guard standing beside it.

A second took out the mana relay.

Regina’s rifle folded into twin short blades as she broke from her overwatch route and joined the entry team.

Daria sent earth through the foundation, lifting the contract anchor free from beneath without cracking it. Grace caught the black pillar on one shoulder. Her Wrathbound Bangle ignited the instant its own defensive field struck her instead of the civilians standing behind her.

"This counts as protecting everyone in the building," she said.

Her next punch separated the pillar clean from its base. Doctor Smoke released a grey neutralizing mist through the ventilation system. Not poison.

Neva’s guards simply lost whatever combat stimulants had been running through their blood and discovered exactly how tired they actually were underneath it. Damien went in last and reached the manager first. The man triggered a hostage contract. Red threads bloomed around thirty borrowers held on the second floor.

"Come closer and they take your damage instead of me." Damien stopped.

"Mina."

"Four clauses on it," she said through the channel.

"The transfer needs line of sight to work." He activated Duskfade. His outline and mana dropped out of sight at once, and the manager’s skill lost its target for exactly one second. That was enough. Shadow Dash put him inside the man’s own shadow. He broke the contract ring, dislocated the casting hand, and pinned him flat against the anchor.

"House Five secured," Grace reported. The operation channel answered back from across Region 21.

"House Two moving."

"House Eight, anchor found."

"House Eleven has civilians in the basement."

"House Three compromised. Requesting exit." Damien didn’t order them to hold. "Withdraw through Route Blue. Sera’s reserve covers you on the way out." The commander acknowledged without a trace of shame in it. Their target would survive six more minutes. Their people would survive the night.

That trade makes itself.

Thirty seconds later, House Nine called for support while House One reported their manager fleeing with a ledger. Damien let the manager run and sent the nearest reserve toward House Nine’s trapped civilians instead.

Martin made no correction over the channel. The fleeing manager carried evidence. The people trapped at House Nine carried futures. Choosing between the two was the entire reason a field commander existed in the first place. House Nine reported its civilians clear two minutes later. Only then did Damien send a Scout out to trace the missing ledger at a safe distance.

At House Seven, Neva had dressed collectors up as borrowers and put real civilians in armor to confuse the strike team.

Hamari caught the difference through movement alone, trained guards watched the doors, terrified captives watched the guards instead. She marked every target without firing a shot and walked the strike team through the room clean.

At House Eleven, Jo Lark found the entire basement floor wired with debt contracts. One wrong step would transfer a walker’s own injuries straight onto the prisoners chained below. She spent nine minutes reading a safe path through it while armed officers waited behind her without a single complaint.

When she finally raised her hand, the team crossed single file and cleared the house without one casualty.

House Eight turned into an actual battlefield. Bram Kade held a corridor against thirty enforcers while Daria came in through the wall behind them. His Elemental Deity shifted the building’s whole environment in seconds, stone sealing off reinforcements, wind clearing the smoke, water drowning a contract fire, thin lightning frying weapons on contact.

"I require support," Bram said, professional and calm, three axes hammering his barrier at once.

"You have it," Daria answered. Four elemental rings aligned behind her. A pressure wave swept every enforcer off their feet without touching a single prisoner chained between them.

Damien tracked every report while descending beneath House Five. He didn’t tell capable people how to run their own classes. He decided where reserves moved, which objectives could afford to wait, and when a win cost more than it was worth.

House Three’s retreat exposed a Neva convoy moving north. Damien held off on pursuit and cross-referenced its route against Reserve Nine’s supply map instead.

"They’re reinforcing the prison." Martin offered two army squads.

"No. Let them in."

"Why?" Grace asked.

"The prison opens its external barrier for authorized vehicles automatically." They hid beneath the convoy’s last transport.

The movement half of Walk of Night carried Damien across the loading yard without a single guard noticing. Hamari’s lenses read the vehicle seals from a distance, and Mina copied one remotely before the convoy rolled into the underground ramp.

Behind them, House Five’s borrowers walked free into the night. Eight fixed houses fell in the first fifteen minutes. Two stayed contested. House Three had already pulled back. House Twelve hadn’t reported in at all.

Then Sera Noll found the real authority behind all of it. The collection train ran under the old metro lines with no public schedule attached to it anywhere. Sera’s Scouts boarded it between stations, and Neva’s guards spotted them on the final carriage, dragging the fight out along the roof at two hundred kilometers an hour. Sera severed the rear car instead of dueling its Level 53 commander directly.

The engine kept running without its defenders attached. Her red scarf tore loose in the tunnel, but she made it to the front and pressed Mina’s nullification seal against the control panel herself.

"Train secured," she reported.

"Scarf’s gone." Hamari held a respectful silence over the channel. Three allied officers died at House Ten when a contract mine triggered under an unmarked threshold nobody had cleared.

Doctor Smoke redirected a treatment station there fast enough to save six more. House Twelve finally checked in, its commander had found a nursery sitting directly above the anchor and refused to move until every child inside had been cleared out first. Damien approved the delay without hesitation.

Twenty-three minutes had already started counting down on Mina’s duplicated seal. They reached Reserve Nine with nineteen left on the clock. The authorized convoy cleared the outer barrier. Damien dropped from the underside of the transport and landed without a sound. Nova Corps came down around him in the same instant.

Behind the vehicle, Martin’s rescue teams waited just past detection range for the inner doors to open. The prison entrance sank into darkness ahead of them.

Eli’s coin sat warm against Damien’s chest. A grey line of steel cut the transport clean in half. Varek Morn stepped out through the wreckage.

"You came." Damien drew his dagger.

"You kept someone who belongs to my team."
