Chapter 151: Due Date
Vera Kline never visited the same office twice.
She conducted business through borrowed conference rooms, moving trains, and restaurants that closed immediately after she left. Her schedule was published only to people whose contracts required her presence.
Sal Kestrel possessed one such contract.
Mina copied his signature, preserved the chain around his case, and sent Vera a routine request: the broker archive had discovered a valuable prisoner whose abilities could be sold before execution. Approval required her seal in person.
Vera chose the meeting place.
A clock museum.
"She has committed to the name," Hamari said.
Hundreds of dead clocks covered the galleries, their faces frozen at whatever hour they’d stopped decades ago. Pendulums hung motionless behind glass, caught mid-swing like insects in amber. An enormous brass face watched the central hall with both hands fixed at twelve, and the whole building held a silence too complete for a room built entirely out of things meant to tick.
Damien arrived disguised as Kestrel’s guard, hood low, posture borrowed from every silent bodyguard he’d ever watched. Mina carried the chained case at her side. Grace posed as the prisoner beneath suppression cuffs, wrists bound and eyes down, playing meek with obvious difficulty. Daria and Hamari entered earlier as visitors, drifting between display cases like people who actually cared about antique clockwork. Doctor Smoke waited in the museum clinic, because apparently even time required first aid.
Vera arrived at 14:00 precisely.
She was a tall woman with iron-gray hair pulled back tight enough to look painful, and a coat fastened by twelve silver buttons that caught the gallery light one at a time as she walked. Three collectors followed her. None looked at the exhibits.
➤[Vera Kline, Level 54]
➤[Class: Maturity Enforcer (Epic)]
➤[Designation: Murderer]
Player Killer’s notification appeared. Damien dismissed it without moving a muscle.
Vera inspected Grace with a slow, assessing look. "Evil God’s Paladin. Level 34. Your report neglected the Epic Class."
Mina did not blink. "The seller discovered it after sending the summary."
"Then the seller is careless."
Grace kept her head lowered, voice flattened into something meeker than her usual tone. "I have been called worse by better."
Vera’s attention shifted to Damien. Recognition did not touch her face, but one silver button on her coat began glowing faintly, a small ember catching against the dark fabric.
"And your guard?"
"Temporary," Mina said.
"Remove the hood."
Damien did.
Every clock in the museum started at once.
Alarms rang in a hundred overlapping pitches. Pendulums swung into sudden motion. Hands spun forward across every dead face in the building as Vera activated her field.
➤[Payment Window.]
➤[All hostile actions must be completed within assigned limits.]
A red number appeared above Damien, ticking down with an audible pulse only he could hear.
➤[00:00:05]
If he failed to attack before it reached zero, a penalty would slow him. If he attacked too soon, the next window would shorten instead. Vera’s Class turned timing itself into debt.
Damien waited four seconds, letting the number bleed down to almost nothing.
At one, he used Shadow Dash.
Vera expected him to appear behind her. He appeared inside the shadow of the brass clock above instead, cut its support with a single motion, and dropped the heavy face between her and the exit with a crash that shook dust loose from the ceiling beams.
"Hamari."
The museum cases opened all along the gallery, glass sliding back in perfect unison.
Armament Regina had spent the morning quietly registering their metal exhibits as temporary weapons. Hamari raised one hand, and a dozen antique blades lifted from their velvet stands, pinning Vera’s collectors against the walls by their clothing with the precision of a puppeteer.
"The glasses do not make this feel responsible," she said.
Daria sealed the exits with stone that grew straight up out of the marble floor, then filled the ceiling with controlled wind to keep Vera’s alarm from transmitting beyond the building. Four elemental rings rotated behind her, faster now, and the museum’s artificial lights bent visibly toward her, curving like small suns caught in her gravity.
Grace broke the suppression cuffs with one twist of her wrists.
Vera pointed at her.
➤[Debt Accelerated.]
The Paladin’s five-second window vanished instantly, collapsing to nothing. A crushing penalty dropped Grace to one knee, the air around her thickening like something with actual weight.
Doctor Smoke opened the clinic door and fired a stimulant dart into her shoulder without breaking stride.
"Payment extension," she said.
Grace rose beneath the penalty anyway, teeth gritted, and caught a collector’s hammer inches from Mina’s head. Wrathbound Bangle ignited along her wrist. Her next blow shattered Vera’s temporal field clean across half the hall, glass-bright cracks spreading through the air itself.
The fixed clocks stopped mid-swing. Damien’s timer lengthened to eight seconds.
"Seal," he told Mina.
Mina moved toward Vera with Kestrel’s case held out in front of her. The deputy retreated, sending new timers flaring toward everyone in the room at once. Damien did not chase her directly. Instead he watched which clock hands turned each time she used the Class.
Every timer drew power from the central brass mechanism he had already dropped.
It was damaged, not destroyed.
"Daria, freeze the gears. Hamari, second hand."
Ice filled the mechanism in a spreading white bloom. A thin blade struck its longest hand exactly at the center pin, snapping it clean.
Every countdown in the room stopped at two seconds.
Damien crossed those two seconds on silent feet, the marble taking his weight without a sound. Vera heard no approach at all. His dagger rested beneath her jaw before she could so much as begin rebuilding the field.
"Kill me and the prison seal expires," she said, voice steady despite the blade at her throat.
"We need it intact."
"Then you need me conscious."
"Yes."
She smiled, thin and confident. "That is my protection."
Damien broke the four glowing buttons controlling her Class one after another, each one going dark as it cracked, and handed her off to Grace.
"Conscious does not mean comfortable."
Grace’s expression brightened considerably at that.
Mina removed the regional seal from inside Vera’s sleeve, careful fingers working past the fabric. It was linked to her heartbeat, but Doctor Smoke kept that rhythm stable while Daria enclosed the connection in a thin shell of ice. Mina copied the authority before the seal ever understood it had changed hands.
The museum fight ended in three minutes and nineteen seconds.
Every civilian survived. All three collectors survived for trial. Vera remained conscious, furious, and unable to move beneath nullification chains that hummed faintly against her wrists.
The museum staff emerged from a protected basement once Martin’s teams had secured the galleries. One curator stared at the broken brass clock and asked, in a voice gone thin with disbelief, who would pay for it.
Elias authorized compensation before anyone could point at Nova Corps.
The curator then inspected Hamari’s borrowed antique weapons with the same horror. "Those blades are ceremonial."
"They performed well under pressure."
"One is from the Sixth Dynasty."
Hamari carefully returned every blade to its velvet stand, straightening each one twice. Armament Regina released its temporary registrations without complaint, though she whispered a small, sincere goodbye to a crescent sword on her way past it.
The moment of absurdity helped the civilians leave without ever having to see Vera’s prisoners as monsters. It also gave Mina time to compare the deputy’s heartbeat seal against the archive. The copy was exact enough to open doors, not exact enough to issue permanent orders. Their rescue window would remain narrow.
Martin’s warrant teams entered through the rear.
"Reserve Nine," Damien said. "How many prisoners?"
Vera looked at him, calm despite everything. "More than you can carry."
"How many guards?"
"More than you can kill."
"Who said kill?"
For the first time, real uncertainty entered her eyes.
Mina opened the copied seal, pages unfolding across the air between them. It contained transfer schedules for twelve loan houses, three holding sites, and one facility built beneath the industrial district. Pathfinder Asset E-39 was scheduled for execution review in forty-one hours.
Beside the schedule, a new mark blinked to life.
Three short pulses. Two long. Three short.
Eli’s coin answered from inside Damien’s pocket, warming against his palm through the fabric.
Vera heard it.
Her uncertainty became fear.
"He should not be able to send from that cell."
Damien closed his hand around the coin, feeling its faint, stubborn heat.
"He likes finding doors."
