Chapter 28 -The Third Presence

The forest shook again.

This time, the tremor did not come from the shrine.

It came from beneath them.

Aether stood at the edge of the ruined Bloodline Shrine, watching cracks spread through the ground. Dust drifted from the ancient stone pillars while the enormous beast that had emerged from beneath the shrine remained motionless.

Its silver eyes were fixed on him.

Not Lyra.

Not Nyx.

Aether.

Something else was waking.

And whatever it was, even the ancient wolf seemed to be paying attention.

“Something is coming,” Lyra said quietly.

Aether nodded.

“I know.”

The Origin System flickered before his eyes.

[Unknown Origin fluctuation detected.]

[Location: Beneath the surrounding forest.]

[Classification: Unable to determine.]

[Threat assessment: Insufficient information.]

Aether frowned.

Even after everything the system had analyzed, it still couldn't identify what was approaching.

That alone was enough to make him cautious.

He glanced toward Nyx.

The small beast stood beside him, fur raised and golden eyes fixed on the darkness between the trees.

The Crimson Fang Wolf was different.

She wasn't looking toward the forest.

She was looking at the shrine.

Her three pups remained close behind her.

The red glow beneath her fur had become stronger.

The ancient wolf noticed it too.

“The trial is changing,” it said.

Aether turned toward it.

“What does that mean?”

“The shrine awakened because bloodlines were disturbed. But now something deeper has sensed that awakening.”

The ancient wolf's gaze moved toward the Crimson Fang Wolf.

“She has three paths before her.”

The wolf growled softly.

Three faint symbols appeared above the ruined shrine.

A crimson wolf surrounded by flames.

A dark wolf beneath a red moon.

And a third symbol that refused to take shape.

The Origin System attempted to analyze them.

[Bloodline Evolution Trial.]

[Path One: Crimson War Wolf.]

[Path Two: Bloodmoon Wolf.]

[Path Three: Unknown.]

[Analysis of Path Three: 3%]

Aether studied the third symbol.

“What makes the third path different?”

The ancient wolf looked at him.

“It is not simply a path of greater strength.”

“Then what is it?”

“Choice.”

The answer was surprisingly simple.

Aether remained silent.

The ancient wolf continued.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from NovelPhoenix; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

“The first path seeks power through battle. The second seeks power through blood and transformation. The third does not yet have a name because its destination depends upon the one who walks it.”

The Crimson Fang Wolf stared at the symbols.

Her pups pressed closer to her legs.

Aether understood.

This wasn't a reward waiting to be claimed.

It was a decision.

He looked at the wolf.

“You don't have to choose now.”

The wolf's crimson eyes met his.

“You should choose when you understand what you're choosing.”

A low growl came from beneath the forest.

BOOM.

The ground split.

Aether immediately moved.

“Lyra. Take the pups away from the shrine.”

Lyra didn't argue.

She grabbed one pup while the mother wolf pushed the other two toward her.

Nyx remained beside Aether.

The massive creature beneath the shrine finally moved.

One enormous claw pressed against the earth.

The entire forest fell silent.

Then—

BOOM!

A shockwave erupted from beneath the trees.

Hundreds of ancient trees bent away from the center of the disturbance.

Aether planted his feet.

His Origin Energy surged through his body.

The pressure wasn't merely physical.

It carried something else.

An ancient Origin principle.

His physique reacted instantly.

[Foreign Origin Principle detected.]

[Beginning adaptation.]

Aether felt heat spread through his chest.

His breathing became heavier.

The strange energy wasn't entering his body like ordinary Origin Energy.

It was being examined.

Broken apart.

Understood.

Then absorbed.

[Origin Adaptation: 16% → 17%]

[Infinite Origin Physique Development: 0.18% → 0.21%]

Aether clenched his fist.

So that's what this was.

The ancient presence wasn't merely dangerous.

Its existence itself was feeding his physique.

But before he could investigate further, something emerged from the darkness.

Not a beast.

Not human.

At least, not entirely.

A long black limb pierced through the earth.

Then another.

The surrounding soil collapsed as a massive silhouette slowly pulled itself from beneath the forest.

Aether narrowed his eyes.

The creature had the shape of a beast, but its body seemed incomplete.

Dark plates covered its back.

Thin crimson lines ran between them like veins.

Its head remained hidden beneath layers of black armor.

Then two pale eyes opened.

The creature looked toward the shrine.

Then toward the ancient wolf.

Finally—

toward Aether.

The Origin System reacted violently.

[WARNING.]

[Unknown Origin existence detected.]

[Analysis failed.]

[Analysis authority insufficient.]

Aether's expression hardened.

Three ancient beings.

One awakened shrine.

And now another unknown existence beneath the forest.

This place was becoming far more dangerous than he had expected.

The creature opened its mouth.

Its voice sounded distorted, as though several voices were speaking at once.

“Origin…”

The ancient wolf's expression changed.

For the first time, Aether saw something resembling caution in its eyes.

The creature continued.

“…has found another vessel.”

Aether's hand slowly moved toward his weapon.

The system flashed.

[Hostility Detection activated.]

[Intent analysis initiated.]

The result appeared almost immediately.

[Hostility: Unknown.]

[Killing Intent: Unknown.]

[Revenge Intent: None detected.]

[Immediate attack intent: None detected.]

Aether didn't attack.

Not yet.

The creature hadn't attacked him.

He wasn't going to kill something simply because it looked dangerous.

“Who are you?” Aether asked.

The creature stared at him.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then its gaze shifted toward Nyx.

The silver mark on Nyx's forehead began glowing.

The creature's eyes widened.

“Two fragments…”

Nyx growled.

Aether stepped slightly in front of her.

The creature noticed.

“You protect the incomplete one.”

“She is mine to protect.”

Aether's voice was calm.

The creature tilted its head.

“And the girl?”

Aether glanced briefly toward Lyra.

Lyra was standing several dozen meters away with the three wolf pups.

“She protects herself.”

Lyra raised an eyebrow.

“Nice answer.”

Despite the situation, Aether almost smiled.

The creature looked between them.

Then its attention returned to Aether.

“You carry the Origin Mark.”

Aether didn't deny it.

“And yet your Origin is incomplete.”

“I know.”

“Then why do you stand before us?”

Aether's expression became colder.

“Because I don't need to be complete to stand.”

The ancient wolf's eyes narrowed.

The creature became silent.

Then something unexpected happened.

It laughed.

Not mockingly.

Almost approvingly.

“Interesting.”

The pressure around the forest suddenly decreased.

The creature withdrew one step.

“I will not fight you.”

Aether didn't lower his guard.

“Why?”

“Because you are not ready.”

Aether's eyes sharpened.

That sentence irritated him more than a direct insult.

But he kept his composure.

The creature turned toward the deeper forest.

“Not yet.”

Aether's Origin System suddenly displayed another message.

[Unknown Origin existence is retreating.]

[Hostility remains undetermined.]

[Warning: Future encounter probability extremely high.]

The creature disappeared into the darkness.

The forest remained still.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then the ancient wolf finally said,

“You have attracted another one.”

Aether looked toward it.

“How many are there?”

The ancient wolf's answer came quietly.

“Enough.”

The shrine suddenly released another pulse of energy.

The Crimson Fang Wolf cried out.

Her body began glowing.

Aether turned.

The three evolution paths appeared again.

But this time, the third symbol changed.

Only slightly.

Yet the system noticed.

[Path Three analysis: 3% → 7%.]

[Unknown evolution principle detected.]

[Trial progression increased.]

The Crimson Fang Wolf looked at the three paths.

Then she looked at her pups.

Finally, she looked toward the place where the unknown creature had disappeared.

Her crimson eyes became firm.

She had made her decision.

But she did not choose a path.

Not yet.

Instead, she stepped forward.

Toward the shrine.

The ancient wolf smiled faintly.

“The trial has truly begun.”

Aether watched her enter the crimson light.

His Origin System opened once more.

[Bloodline Evolution Trial: Phase Two initiated.]

[Requirement: Protect what the bloodline considers its own.]

Aether's gaze shifted toward the three pups.

Then toward Lyra.

Then Nyx.

He understood immediately.

This wasn't going to be a simple evolution.

It was going to test what the Crimson Fang Wolf was willing to protect.

And somewhere beneath the forest, another ancient presence was already watching.

Aether looked at his own status.

Origin Awakening — Stage 2

Origin Points: 173/150

Origin Adaptation: 17%

Infinite Origin Physique: 0.21%

Potential: ∞

The numbers were still small.

But they were moving.

And Aether had begun to understand something important.

His greatest advantage wasn't that he was already powerful.

It was that everything he encountered could become part of his growth.

He just needed to survive long enough to reach the point where his potential could finally be unleashed.

The shrine pulsed again.

And deep beneath the forest—

something answered.
