The approval arrived at 2:13 in the morning.
Dhiraj was still awake.
He stood alone in the National Coordination Laboratory, staring at the deployment map projected across the glass wall.
Five corridors.
Three infrastructure classes.
Twenty-seven sites.
One national trial.
And, for the first time, none of the systems would be operating inside a controlled laboratory environment.
A message appeared in the corner of the display.

Dhiraj read it twice.
Then he opened the engineering schedule.
The optimism lasted approximately six seconds.
"That’s impossible."
Aarya’s voice came from behind him.
Dhiraj didn’t turn.
"You’ve been standing there long enough to know the schedule is impossible."
"I’ve been here for four minutes."
"Exactly."
She walked beside him and studied the deployment map.
Mumbai–Pune railway support facilities.
Two municipal water networks.
A regional electrical distribution cluster.
A communications backbone facility.
A mixed-generation industrial corridor.
Twenty-seven sites.
Different operators.
Different equipment.
Different maintenance histories.
Different authority structures.
Different interpretations of what the word available meant.
Aarya folded her arms.
"We have eleven days."
"We have eleven days to install."
"And?"
"Twenty-three to certify."
She looked at him.
"That’s worse."
"Yes."
For several seconds neither spoke.
Then Aarya zoomed into the manufacturing layer.
The problem was obvious.
The hardware was ready.
The processors were ready.

The bottleneck was something far less impressive.

"You could delay the deployment," Aarya said.
Dhiraj shook his head.

"No."
He looked at her.
"Because we don’t know whether the architecture works at national scale until we put it into real infrastructure."
Aarya’s expression tightened.
"That’s not the same as rushing it."
"I’m not rushing."
"You just said eleven days."
"I’m refusing to manufacture evidence by changing the engineering requirements."
That made her pause.
Then she nodded.
"Fine."
She pointed at the map.
"Then we don’t install twenty-seven complete systems."
Dhiraj looked at her.
"We install what?"
"Twenty-seven certification paths."
He said nothing.
Aarya continued.
"Every site doesn’t need the same hardware on day one. What we need is a standardized way to characterize the site, identify its capability boundaries, establish its authority path, install the minimum required continuity hardware, and prove the system before declaring it operational."
Dhiraj turned toward the main engineering board.
"FDM-2."
"Exactly."
The Field Deployment Module had originally been designed to make deployment easier.
It had become something more important.
A standardized bridge between Aetherion engineering and unpredictable physical infrastructure.
But it still depended heavily on technicians making correct decisions during installation.
Dhiraj pulled up the current commissioning process.

One final certification.
Aarya stared at it.

"What is it?"

It was not another intelligence layer.

It did something more practical.
The FCU-1 connected to an FDM-2 installation and physically walked the site through commissioning.
It verified sensor identity.
It checked wiring.
It tested isolation.
It compared measured electrical characteristics against expected boundaries.
It confirmed communication paths.
It interrogated authority channels.
It performed controlled failure tests.
It compared observed equipment behavior with the declared capability model.
And if the evidence didn’t match the model, it stopped.
No technician could simply click past the discrepancy.
No software could declare success because enough tests had passed.
The field unit produced one of three results.

Dhiraj stared at the final screen.
"How much hardware?"
"Less than an FDM-2," one engineer replied. "Most of it is reused instrumentation."
"Cost?"
"Thirty-eight percent below the current field commissioning kit."
Aarya looked over.
"That’s not the important number."
The engineer hesitated.
"Commissioning time?"
"Yes."
"Estimated reduction from seven hours to two and a half."
Dhiraj nodded.
That mattered.
Not because Aetherion wanted cheaper installations.
Because the difference between seven hours and two and a half hours changed national deployment mathematics.
Three thousand assemblies per month meant little if every installation required a full day of specialist engineering.
Execution capacity was still the enemy.
FCU-1 attacked it directly.

A technician watched the display.

"Verified."

The technician looked toward the Aetherion engineer.
"Is that a problem?"
The engineer didn’t answer immediately.

The engineer nodded.
"Continue."
The installation proceeded.

Then came the test nobody enjoyed.
Controlled loss of external communication.
The facility’s connection to the wider coordination network disappeared.
The local infrastructure remained operational.
The C-1R node shifted into local continuity mode.
The ACI-1 terminal displayed authority status.
The PADE-1 envelope remained available.
The FCU-1 began injecting simulated evidence degradation.
One sensor was intentionally removed from the trusted evidence set.
Another reported a stale state.
A third disagreed with the equipment controller.
The system did not collapse into uncertainty.
It narrowed its operating envelope.

Then the backup generator temperature began rising.

Aarya watched the model from the remote engineering center.
"That’s the part I wanted."
Dhiraj stood beside her.
"What?"
"The capability isn’t disappearing."
She pointed at the curve.
"It’s shrinking."
Dhiraj watched the trajectory.
The difference looked small.
But it represented a major conceptual shift.
Infrastructure was no longer represented as a collection of binary states.
It was becoming a continuously measured physical system.
Available.
Degrading.

Past boundary.
The machine wasn’t predicting the future.

The water service remained within its declared envelope.
No human intervention was required.
The PADE-1 envelope had done exactly what it had been designed to do.
Execute a human-defined decision under a bounded emergency condition.
Then stop.
The field test ended.

Aarya exhaled.
Dhiraj looked at the timestamp.
"Twenty-seven minutes."
"From failure initiation to stable recovery?"
"Yes."
She smiled slightly.
"Not bad."
"No."
He looked at the deployment statistics.
"Not enough."
Aarya glanced at him.
"You really don’t know how to enjoy anything."
"I enjoy useful data."
"That’s tragic."
He finally smiled.
It lasted long enough for her to notice.
She didn’t comment.
