Xavier woke up Monday morning and checked two things before getting out of bed.

His daily cap. And the Asset Rebound countdown from the Meridian Street property.

He looked at that number for a long moment.

Nearly four million, he thought. From $520. In under five months.

He put the phone down and stared at the ceiling for exactly ten seconds letting it land properly.

Then he got up.

Mr. Hartley arrived at 8AM precisely with the second suit draped over his arm — deep navy this time, same clean construction as the charcoal but carrying itself differently in the light. Xavier tried it on in the bathroom. Mr. Hartley came in, looked at him for five seconds, adjusted the right sleeve by a margin Xavier hadn’t noticed needed adjusting, stepped back.

"Good," he said. Just that.

Xavier settled the remaining balance at the desk while Mr. Hartley repacked his bag.

Xavier stood in front of the mirror in the navy suit.

Different from the early days, he thought. When every dollar felt like it needed to be squeezed for everything it was worth because there was nothing underneath it. He checked himself in the mirror one final time. Now I have businesses. Actual businesses generating actual returns. Anyone looking at my spending habits sees a young entrepreneur with a growing portfolio. The money has a story now. A legitimate one.

He headed out.

Mama Elizabeth was at her door.

"You look like somebody’s lawyer," she said.

"Good morning ma," Xavier said.

"Good morning." She handed him a covered container. "Food. Eat before you go anywhere."

"Thank you ma," he said. He couldn’t ever get old of her food culture.

He ate in the Panamera. The food was what it always was. Proper, nothing apologetic about it. He finished, put the container on the passenger seat and pulled into the Monday morning city.

The drive to Hale & Associates gave him twenty minutes to run the day properly.

$500,000 cap, he thought. $40,000 already used on the suit balance. $380,000 held for the food distribution acquisition. That leaves $80,000 for the rest of the day. He moved through a green light. After the acquisition clears and the standard rebate lands I’ll have tomorrow’s full cap to work with. He checked the side mirror. Asset Rebound from today’s acquisition triggers Thursday. $380,000 invested. Standard rebate returns $760,000 immediately. Asset Rebound adds $1,140,000 Thursday. He did the final math. Total return from one acquisition will amount to $1,900,000. Net positive $1,520,000.

From $380,000, he thought.

The system is genuinely unhinged.

He pulled into the Hale & Associates underground car park. Found his usual space. Cut the engine.

Third acquisition, he thought. Investment portfolio moves to $1,110,000 after today. One third of the quest target.

He got out. Locked the Panamera. Took the lift to the sixth floor.

The doors opened.

Selene was at the standing desk.

She looked up when the lift opened. Her eyes moved from his face to the suit. The navy this time and back. The half second was there. Slightly longer than the charcoal had produced.

Different suit, he noted. Same effect. Maybe slightly more.

"Mr. Hale is in the meeting room this morning," she said. "Third door on the left."

Meeting room, he noted. Not the office.

"Thank you Selene," he said. Using her name the way he always did now.

She held his gaze for a moment.

"The food distribution company," she said. "Gerald Obi’s accountant has already been in contact about the ownership transfer paperwork running smoothly." She paused. "Mr. Hale thought you’d want to know."

She’s briefing me, he thought. Unprompted. Going beyond the professional minimum.

"I appreciate that," he said.

He walked down the corridor to the third door waving at her on the way.

The meeting room was larger than Vincent’s office. A long table, six chairs, a screen on the far wall. Vincent was already seated at the head. Two senior analysts. David and Christine sat along one side with the composed energy of people who worked at this level and had stopped being impressed by rooms a long time ago.

And Selene. Sitting at the far end of the table with her tablet and her professional composure and the navy suit registering somewhere behind her eyes that she wasn’t showing in her expression.

First time in an actual meeting, Xavier noted. Not the corridor. Not the standing desk. Actually in the room.

Vincent stood briefly when Xavier entered.

"Xavier," he said. "David and Christine have been working the food distribution case."
