The lights stayed in the mirror.

Lucas saw them first. Blue and red turning against the dark glass, steady and close enough that the cabin started to feel smaller. Rechelle saw them half a second later. Whatever heat had been left between them died on contact. Her hand left his leg. His foot found the brake.

"Top. Now."

Rechelle dragged her shirt down fast, smoothing the fabric over her chest with both palms. Lucas shoved himself back into his jeans. He was still half hard, and the denim fought him. He forced the zipper up, fixed the wheel with one hand, and put on the signal. The BMW eased toward the shoulder. Gravel whispered under the tires. The car stopped. Behind them, the patrol unit settled into place, lights still turning across the rear window and washing the interior in short flashes of color.

Neither of them spoke.

Rechelle’s hands kept moving anyway. She checked the side mirror, then froze. Spit still marked the corner of her mouth, shiny under the streetlight. Without thinking, she reached into the back seat, grabbed the first piece of cloth her fingers found, and wiped her lips clean in two quick passes.

Only then did she look at what she was holding.

Her white bra.

The soft cups were crumpled in her hand. For a second she just stared at it, like her brain needed time to catch up with her fingers. Outside, boots hit pavement. A car door shut. Lucas rolled the window down just as the officer reached the BMW.

Rechelle went still with the bra still in her palm.

The officer’s greeting never fully formed. His eyes moved from Lucas to the passenger seat, caught on the white fabric, and stayed there a second too long. The afternoon air came in through the open window, cooler than the heat still trapped in the cabin. Somewhere down the road a truck passed, and the sound of it felt too loud.

Rechelle noticed the stare.

She lowered the bra slowly into her lap, the way a person moves when sudden motion might make things worse. The officer’s gaze followed it down, then rose again and landed on her chest. Her nipples were still hard from the earlier rush, pressing clear through the thin shirt. For a moment the man outside the car said nothing at all. Whatever line he had prepared at the door slipped out of place.

Lucas watched him.

The officer was still looking at Rechelle. Not at the road. At her. The shift in Lucas’s face was small, but the patience under it thinned fast.

"Good day, officer."

His voice came out louder than usual. Clean. Controlled. The kind of tone that pulled attention back where it belonged. The officer blinked hard, as if the words had dragged him out of a private thought he should not have been having.

"Ah... good day."

The start was already weak. He cleared his throat once, then again, and tried to set his shoulders.

"You were driving erratically. We received multiple calls about a vehicle matching this description. Swerving. Delayed reactions at the light."

He tried to hold the authority in his voice, but it had already leaked. His eyes flicked once more toward the passenger seat, then away, too late to pretend the glance had not happened. Lucas saw it. Rechelle saw it. The officer knew they both had.

"You don’t appear intoxicated," he said, faster now, already stepping back from the door.

Lucas did not help him. He kept both hands on the wheel and waited.

The officer cleared his throat, looked anywhere but at the passenger seat, and tapped the window frame once with two fingers.

"Drive carefully."

He did not ask for a license. He did not ask for registration. He turned and walked back to his car with the stiff, hurried walk of a man trying to outrun his own embarrassment. The door shut harder than it needed to. A second later the lights went dark. The patrol car pulled into traffic and disappeared down the road.

Only then did the cabin feel like it belonged to them again.

Lucas looked at Rechelle.

Her cheeks were fully red now. Not the bold color from earlier, when she had been in control of him and the moment. This was different. Quieter. She sat with her eyes lowered, mouth closed, the sharp edge she usually carried nowhere in sight. The bra was still half-hidden under her thigh. One of her hands had curled into the hem of her shirt, holding it down even though nothing was out of place anymore.

For a few seconds neither of them said anything.

Rechelle let out a small breath and glanced toward the empty road behind them, then back at her lap.

"I grabbed the wrong thing," she muttered.

Lucas faced forward, put the car in gear, and pulled off the shoulder. The BMW joined the lane cleanly. Ordinary speed. Ordinary traffic. The earlier chaos sat behind them like something that had almost gone much worse.

Rechelle fixed her shirt again, even though it did not need fixing. The redness in her face had not faded. She looked out the window, then at him, then away again, caught between leftover boldness and the simple fact that an officer of the law had just seen her holding her own bra in her hand with her nipples showing through her shirt.

Lucas kept his eyes on the road, but his mind was already past the stop and past Rechelle, pulled hard toward home where Mia, Daisy, Debbie, and Gracie had been waiting longer than he ever meant to leave them. The police lights were gone, the officer was gone, and still the heavier pressure sat ahead of him, not behind. Showing up with another woman was already enough. Showing up with another woman and empty hands felt worse. He checked the time, then the exits, already scanning for anything still open at this hour, a place with food, something warm, something simple, anything he could carry through the door that said he had not forgotten them.
