Infinite Nightmares
Chapter 160: Attack
Just as the giant hammer was about to smash down on Zhang Wenda, a roar ripped from his throat. With a spray of blood, two of his mangled fingers were severed and fell to the ground.
In that instant, he transformed into a whirlwind of scythes, spiraling rapidly up the Buddha's arm from its wrist. Amid the sound of tearing flesh and blood, Zhang Wenda, now just a blur, burrowed directly into the giant monster's throat.
But even so, it didn't die. With the Buddha's roar, throbbing veins rapidly crawled over its entire body.
The wounds Zhang Wenda inflicted were healing at an astonishing rate. More importantly, its roar shattered the circuit board wall to the left, and two more identical Buddhas appeared before Zhang Wenda.
Drenched in blood, he stared at the new enemies, roared, and charged again without the slightest hesitation.
Every time he felt himself slicing across their skin, a violent thrill shuddered through Zhang Wenda.
With every wound he inflicted, a wave of pleasure washed over him. Driven by this feeling, his attacks grew faster, his movements more brutal.
As these sensations surged, they began to crowd out the reason in Zhang Wenda's mind, luring him to submerge himself completely.
At this moment, the less he thought, the stronger he became. As this transformation occurred, his body grew increasingly ferocious.
These Buddhas, whatever they were, were undeniably powerful, but they were gradually losing ground to the man Zhang Wenda had become.
THUD! The moment the first giant head crashed to the ground before Zhang Wenda, the battle entered its final countdown.
Soon, the second and third followed, until everything gradually fell silent.
Steam rose from Zhang Wenda's body as he panted, exhilarated. But then a sudden wave of delayed fear snapped him back to his senses. He had no time to rest; he immediately began searching for his uncle, heading through the breach in the circuit board wall.
But as he went on, Zhang Wenda realized something was wrong. The environment was completely different from the last time he was here. These paths before him simply hadn't existed then.
Zhang Wenda pressed his scythe to a circuit board, concentrating. He instantly realized that the ceiling, the floor, and even the walls were all slowly shifting. The place had become a giant labyrinth!
"Qianxi... has hidden the Angel Engines..." A weak voice suddenly echoed in Zhang Wenda's mind.
Zhang Wenda wasn't startled. 'There weren't many people with the ability to speak inside another's mind, and he just so happened to know one.' "Maomao?"
"I'm over here. Go thirty paces to your left, then take a right. I'm injured..."
Following Hu Maomao's directions, Zhang Wenda soon found her lying on the ground, barely breathing. She was severely wounded; her left leg and foot were missing.
Zhang Wenda pulled out a lollipop and stuck it in her mouth. "Have you seen my uncle?"
Hu Maomao spat the lollipop out, tilting her head back to say, "Qianxi has used this labyrinth to hide the three Angel Engines. You have to find them. Destroy them."
"I wasn't asking about the Angel Engines! I'm asking you about my uncle!"
Bleeding from a head wound, Hu Maomao looked up at him. "What's more important right now?! Is one life more important than the entire world? Haven't you noticed that the whole world is falling into chaos?"
"My uncle is more important! Where is he!" Zhang Wenda answered without hesitation.
Hu Maomao stared at Zhang Wenda in disbelief, stunned by his answer. "Are you insane? Why would HQ send someone like you? Aren't you from the Third Line? What about your commitment?"
"When I was at my most vulnerable and in the greatest danger, my uncle was the one who took me in! He raised me! Not the world! If there's a priority list, my uncle is always ahead of the world! Only after I've saved him do I even have the right to consider saving the world!"
Zhang Wenda hauled Hu Maomao to her feet, looked her in the eyes, and said, enunciating every word, "Now, answer me! Where is my uncle!"
Just as they were locked in a standoff, a soft chuckle sounded from nearby. Zhang Wenda whipped his head around to see a Crow perched there. It was Tang Xingxiong's Crow.
Upon seeing the Crow, Zhang Wenda's heart sank.
"Heh heh... as I thought. Leaving a little live bait behind really did lure something out. I just didn't expect that something to be you, little nephew."
"I heard everything you just said. So my instincts were right. You're the mole from the Third Line."
With Tang Xingxiong laying her cards on the table, Zhang Wenda didn't bother to deny it. He just asked calmly, "Where's my uncle?"
"Your uncle is dead. Since you miss him so much, I'll send you down to join him!"
After Tang Xingxiong spoke, a dense swarm of crows flew from a distant corner, blotting out the sky as they descended upon him.
Without hesitation, Zhang Wenda took out an enamel mug, drew Hu Maomao inside it, and then turned and ran, showing no intention of engaging Tang Xingxiong.
'He knew she was lying. If his uncle were really dead, she would be either ecstatic or overcome with grief, definitely not wearing this expression.'
Zhang Wenda searched as he ran. He was moving so fast that Tang Xingxiong's crows could barely keep up behind him.
"To the left! That's the way to the Angel Engine! Qianxi has been lured away!" Hu Maomao's voice frequently rang in Zhang Wenda's mind.
"Shut up! You say one more word and I'll throw you out!" But just then, Zhang Wenda screeched to a halt as another large flock of crows appeared in front of him, charging right at him.
"You forced me to do this!" Zhang Wenda's body faded from sight. The two swarms of crows collided, but their target was nowhere to be found.
The next second, crimson wounds began to appear on the crows out of thin air, morphing into gaping, bloody maws that began to shriek mad curses.
The instant the crows felt themselves being attacked, they scattered to reduce their density.
But this only mitigated the damage; it couldn't stop Zhang Wenda's assault, which was coming from outside of Thought Wave 13.
This tactic left Tang Xingxiong at a complete loss. Despite her numerous abilities, she had no way to retaliate against this kind of attack.
Soon enough, however, she found a solution. The crows inside the labyrinth flew swiftly outward.
The crows flew out of the labyrinth and, following the fissures between Thought Waves, began to pour inside them to find which one Zhang Wenda occupied.
Once they confirmed Zhang Wenda was attacking from Thought Wave Two, the crows split into two flocks and assaulted him simultaneously. His dimensional attack was completely nullified.
Seeing the sky full of crows relentlessly attacking him, Zhang Wenda took out a mushroom and, without hesitation, took a bite.
Wai appeared and began frantically attacking the surrounding crows, but they seemed endless, their numbers only increasing.
Shrouded by the crows, the light within both Thought Waves began to dim.
