INFINITE MEMORIES : MY F-RANK SKILL IS ACTUALLY THE STRONGEST
Chapter 96: BEYOND THE HORIZON
<Chapter - 96 Beyond the Horizon of Dead Cycles>
The morning air over the high-altitude plateau of the Central Stronghold was crisp, untouched by the synthetic mana filters or smog exhaust that had choked the lower sectors under corporate rule.
In the stronghold’s vast, stone-hewn courtyard, Jiho Park was already seated on an overturned ironwood crate. His faded, scuffed slide sandals rested against the dewy flagstones, and he held a steaming ceramic bowl filled with leftover spiced beef stew and flatbread.
"Man," Jiho mumbled between massive, unhurried bites. "Master, the mountain air makes breakfast taste thirty percent better. But Master Alistair is in the basement screaming at a copper box again. He’s been at it since sunrise."
"That ’copper box’ is an uncalibrated 14th-Cycle relay transceiver, Jiho!" Alistair Vance’s voice bellowed through the workshop stairwell.
Alistair burst into the sunlight, his tweed waistcoat coated in chalk dust and metal shavings. He carried a heavy iron tray piled high with glowing holographic parchment and a brass thermos filled to the brim with espresso. Dark circles ringed his eyes, but his gaze was electric with frantic, scholarly mania.
"Boss! Boss, you need to look at this triangulation!" Alistair shouted, practically sliding onto the stone patio table beside Noah. "When you achieved 3.00% Gold Archive Synchronization, you didn’t just unseal the municipal energy grid. The four regional archives—Wood in the outer barrens, Bronze beneath the core mines, Silver at the frozen boundary, and Gold in the caldera—formed a closed geometric vector!"
Chloe Harrington strolled out from the veranda, sipping a mug of hot spiced cider. She wore her familiar leather duster over casual clothes, her dead platinum revolvers resting loosely in their holsters. She flipped her silver coin in a lazy, high arc, catching it with a crisp snap.
"A closed vector pointing where, Alistair?" Chloe asked with an amused smirk. "Don’t tell me we have to go rob another corporate gala. Those executives cry too much when their chandeliers break."
"Not a gala, Chloe!" Alistair blurted out, tapping a holographic projection pen against the table.
A three-dimensional golden map flickered to life in the cool morning air. The map rendered the entire known continent—and then extended far past the northern sea into a jagged, unmapped landmass labeled simply as The Edge of Origin.
"The four archives were never meant to be standalone vaults," Alistair explained rapidly, his hands trembling with caffeine and excitement. "They were anchor nodes! Together, they hold the seal over the Primordial Cradle—the physical mainframe where the International System was first coded during the Great Cataclysm!"
Noah Kurtz sat calmly on a wooden bench near the courtyard edge, his dark coat draped loosely over his shoulders. His ash-black hair blew slightly in the mountain breeze, his steel-gray eyes fixed on the distant northern horizon where white mountain peaks met the vast, gray ocean.
Pinned over his left chest lapel—right above his heart—was the simple, dark ironwood leaf brooch. Underneath his sleeves, his black ironwood forearm guards hummed in a quiet, zero-waste loop, circulating his newly unlocked Gold Sovereign Ki.
"The System Origin," Noah spoke softly, his flat, calm voice carrying an ancient, unflinching weight.
"Yes!" Alistair gasped. "The Church doesn’t worship a god, Boss—they worship the automated security daemon of that mainframe! The High Council is moving their remaining forces to the northern void right now to initiate a forced cycle reset before your authority expands further!"
Sitting beside Noah on the wide wooden bench was Rin Asakura.
She wore a soft, navy-trimmed traveling kimono, her simple wooden practice sword laid across her knees. Her black silk blindfold was turned toward the glowing holographic projection on the table.
Through Asura’s Touch, Rin did not see the flickering light. But she felt the subtle, terrifying shifts in the continental atmosphere. A deep, cold kinetic distortion was gathering in the far north—a synthetic hum so rigid and unnatural that it felt like an iron cage trying to drop over the entire sky.
Slowly, Rin reached out, her pale, delicate fingers sliding over Noah’s forearm guard until she felt his bare palm.
She entwined her fingers with his, feeling the steady, unhurried rhythm of his heartbeat.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
The moment their palms connected, Noah’s Silver-Tier Ki loop expanded gently, enveloping Rin in a warm, protective barrier that filtered out the distant, synthetic distortion.
"The wind from the north is sharp, Noah..." Rin whispered softly, her melodic, formal cadence carrying a quiet, breathtaking intimacy. "It carries no life... only cold, calculated law."
Noah turned his head, looking down into her blindfolded face. A rare, gentle warmth touched his steel-gray eyes as he tightened his fingers around hers.
"That’s because the System was never built for life, Rin," Noah said gently. "It was built to manage survivors like livestock. To put numbers over men’s heads and tell them when they were allowed to breathe."
Rin leaned her shoulder softly against his arm, her lips curving into a serene, beautiful smile. "Then we will teach the northern void that life does not answer to numbers."
Chloe leaned against the balcony rail, tossing a dried plum into her mouth while glancing at the map. "Probability lines in the north are completely tangled, Boss. It’s like walking into a storm of dead code. My revolvers won’t have standard luck vectors up there."
"You won’t need luck, Chloe," Noah replied flatly, his slouching posture completely relaxed. "You have Jiho."
Jiho looked up from his third bowl of stew, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand and grinning sleepily. "Yeah, Chloe! If a giant robot or a Church daemon tries to cast a spell, I’ll just throw a rock at it. Or a boulder."
"See? Tactical genius," Chloe laughed, holstering her revolvers. "Alistair, pack your coffee beans. We’re going to the edge of the world."
"I have seventeen pounds of dark roast already sealed in vacuum tubes!" Alistair declared proudly, clutching his brass thermos like a holy relic.
Noah stood up smoothly from the bench.
He reached down with his right hand, gently assisting Rin to her feet. Rin rose with weightless, fluid grace, her left hand remaining securely linked in his palm as she adjusted her wooden practice sword against her hip with her right.
Noah turned his steel-gray eyes toward the northern sky.
For years, since awakening in the lower slums of Sentinel City as an "F-Rank" nobody, he had walked through the mud in silence. He had ignored the mocking laughs of corporate evaluators, the cold dismissal of Evelyn Vance, and the divine edicts of the Archive Church. He had gathered the Wood, Bronze, Silver, and Gold Archives step by step, reclaiming his lost history while keeping his human heart intact.
Now, only one threshold remained.
"Jiho, Chloe, Alistair," Noah commanded softly, his flat, rasping whisper carrying an absolute authority that resonated through the mountain stone. "Prepare the high-altitude skiff. We cross the northern sea today."
"Got it, Master!" Jiho cheered, swinging his massive canvas duffel bag over his broad shoulder.
"Setting the flight vector for the edge of the void, Boss!" Alistair called out, sprinting back down the stairs with armfuls of blueprints.
Rin turned her blindfolded face up toward Noah’s profile, her pale lips parting as she felt the absolute, calm resolve radiating through his hand.
"Are you ready, Noah?" Rin murmured softly, her breath warm against his sleeve.
Noah looked down at her, a subtle, genuine smile touching his lips as he gently squeezed her hand.
"With you beside me, Rin," Noah spoke softly, "I was ready from the start."
Hand in hand, with the morning sun casting their long shadows across the ancient ironwood patio and their loyal squad following close behind, Noah Kurtz and Rin Asakura stepped toward the northern horizon.
The battle for the System Origin had begun, and the world was about to see what happened when an unranked ghost stood before the architect of the universe.
