Chapter 160: The Broken Pontiff’s Throne

The interior of the High Sanctum stretched out beneath a vaulted dome of polished obsidian and gold-leaf mosaics depicting the false ascension of the First Patriarch.

Unlike the austere, consecrated marble of the public cathedral, this private inner chamber was suffocatingly warm, heavy with the sharp, chemical reek of boiling consecrated mercury and overtaxed cooling coils. Around the circumference of the raised dais, sixteen automated containment pylons hissed continuously, venting plumes of crimson steam into the dim, cavernous air. In the center of the dais, suspended within a bubbling vat of pressurized mercury, floated a fractured, crimson-black polyhedron that writhed like a trapped, bleeding heart—Record Fragment #039 (The Corrupted Sovereign Seal).

Kneeling before the mercury vat, his trembling hands gripping a gilded crozier inlaid with dying aether crystals, was High Pontiff Malachi.

His ceremonial vestments of spun gold and white samite were stained at the hem with dark soot and metallic sludge. The towering papal tiara, encrusted with celestial diamonds, had tilted precariously over his furrowed brow, casting haggard, trembling shadows across his gaunt, paper-pale face. His bloodshot eyes bulged with raw terror as the thirty-cubit gates of white star-iron swung fully open, admitting the cold, clean air of the colonnade into his suffocating tomb.

Walking through the open threshold with his habitual, unhurried slouch was Noah Kurtz.

His hands were buried comfortably inside the deep pockets of his dark woolen coat. His worn collar rested easily against his neck, his ash-black hair shifting in the sudden draft. His steel-gray eyes took in the bubbling vat of mercury and the trembling old man with cool, clinical detachment. Pinned to his left chest lapel directly above his heart, the dark ironwood leaf brooch absorbed the harsh, artificial static of the room, converting the toxic crimson heat into a tranquil, golden Ki circulation loop directly into his lower meridians. Beneath his dark sleeves, his black ironwood forearm guards lay quiet, their internal kinetic dampening arrays humming in seamless, zero-waste equilibrium.

Circulate.

Inside Noah’s core, his 7.20% Memory Cabinet Synchronization moved like deep, immovable bedrock. The six gathered sovereign keys—the Wood, the Silver, the Coral, the Pearl, the Meridian Compass, and the Prime Tectonic Key—hummed in unified, harmonic authority. To Noah’s senses, the weeping crimson anchor within the vat was not a volatile weapon; it was an ancient limb that had been bound, poisoned, and twisted by five centuries of parasitic theft.

Walking soundlessly beside him, her slender left hand linked seamlessly within his right palm, was Rin Asakura.

Rin wore her ocean-tailored lavender kimono, the deep indigo ribbons along her sleeves swaying with weightless grace at every step. Her white woolen shawl rested lightly over her shoulders, and her simple wooden practice sword swayed peacefully at her left hip.

Her crystalline violet eyes looked upon the high pontiff, open, unsealed, and brimming with clear, radiant light.

Without a blindfold, and with the full depth of Asura’s Touch interwoven with her unsealed void-sight, Rin perceived the pathetic frailty of the church’s supreme ruler. She didn’t merely see his gold robes; she saw his withered, decaying mana channels, burned out from decades of forcing stolen tectonic energy into his mortal frame. She mapped the frantic, stuttering pulse of the crimson key, and the infinite, immovable sanctuary radiating from Noah’s hand into hers.

Slowly, Rin leaned her shoulder gently against Noah’s arm, her delicate fingers tightening their warm, devoted grip within his palm.

“His crown is made of diamonds, Noah, yet his spirit is shivering in the dark…” Rin whispered softly, her melodic, formal cadence carrying an intimate sweetness that rose cleanly above the hiss of the cooling coils. “He sat upon this golden seat believing he had become an immortal shepherd of the world. Now that the stolen mantle has slipped, he is merely a frightened child who locked himself inside a burning cellar.”

Noah turned his head, his steel-gray gaze softening with genuine, unshakeable tenderness as he looked down into her clear violet eyes. He gently squeezed her fingers, his thumb caressing the soft curve of her knuckles with quiet warmth.

“A shepherd feeds his flock, Rin,” Noah spoke softly, his flat, rasping whisper carrying the calm weight of ancient eons. “Malachi only knew how to shear them. He spent four hundred years poisoning this anchor with mercury because he knew that if the 10th Cycle’s memory ever spoke, every prayer the Church ever sold would be revealed as an invoice for stolen bread. When you build your heaven out of poison, you shouldn’t be surprised when you choke on the vapor.”

Rin stepped closer into his space, resting her cheek gently against the rough wool of his sleeve while holding their linked hands against her heart.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

“And we are here to wash the poison away, Noah,” Rin murmured softly, her breath warm against his coat, her violet eyes glowing with absolute devotion.

Behind them at the threshold, the heavy, rhythmic crunch-slap of rubber soles broke the oppressive quiet of the sanctum.

Jiho Park trudged inside, dragging his faded, scuffed slide sandals lazily across the gilded mosaic floor as he let out a long, jaw-cracking yawn that reverberated through the obsidian dome. The massive S-Rank Juggernaut wore his baggy gray sweatpants and oversized yellow cotton tank top, completely ignoring the blistering heat radiating from the mercury vat. Balanced over his broad right shoulder was his indestructible canvas duffel bag. In his left hand, he held the polished silver bone of the turkey drumstick, using the tip to scratch his messy black hair with a sleepy frown.

“Man,” Jiho mumbled around a heavy sigh, his droopy eyes half-shut as he peered at the boiling red soup on the dais. “Master, it smells like burnt car batteries in here. Look at that shiny old man on his knees. Is that the Pope? He looks like a dried mushroom left out in the sun. Master, if that red rock explodes, does it blow up or does it just splatter hot grease everywhere? I don’t want red stains on my sweatpants.”

“It won’t explode, Jiho,” Noah replied smoothly, a dry, faint smirk touching the corner of his lips. “Sit by the door and keep your sandals clear of the drain.”

“Master, your consideration for my footwear is deeply touching,” Jiho beamed sleepily, immediately dropping his duffel bag against a golden pillar and settling down cross-legged with a heavy thud. “Perimeter secured. Awaiting clean air protocol.”

Strolling lightly along the outer containment circle to Noah’s left, Chloe Harrington caught her silver coin with an effortless, rhythmic snap.

Clink.

She wore her dark leather duster unbuttoned over a light linen shirt, her dead platinum revolvers resting quietly in their holsters. Her sharp amber eyes sparkled with brilliant golden probability lines as she surveyed the sixteen cooling pylons.

“Probability vectors for an emergency detonation: down to zero point zero percent, Boss,” Chloe reported with a sharp, rebellious smirk. “The high pontiff tried to initiate a terminal containment purge thirty seconds ago, but the mercury heating loops just shorted out. The church’s main battery grid died when you cut the crypt siphon downstairs. He’s sitting on a pile of cold scrap.”

“And the broadcast is reaching maximum planetary saturation, Boss!” Alistair Vance blurted out, breathlessly jogging into the sanctum while clutching his brass-rimmed walking spectacles.

Alistair carried his portable espresso rig strapped securely to his chest, clutching a steaming ceramic mug of dark roast in one hand and his glowing holographic datapad in the other. He pointed his tablet directly at the kneeling pontiff.

“Every municipal screen across all twelve sectors is streaming this exact chamber!” Alistair laughed loudly, taking a scalding sip of coffee. “The entire Hunter Association Board of Directors, the regional guild masters, and millions of ordinary citizens are watching the Holy Father grovel before an unregistered F-Rank porter! His Holiness’s approval rating has officially dropped below zero!”

“Heretic…” Malachi gasped, his voice a hoarse, ragged rattle as he looked up, his crozier clattering onto the obsidian tiles. “You… you have no authority… the System appointed our order to maintain the holy seal! Without the Church’s siphon, the tectonic rifts will tear the continent apart… the Cataclysm will return—!”

“The Cataclysm didn’t tear the world apart, Malachi,” Noah spoke flatly, taking a slow, unhurried step onto the raised dais. “The resets did. And your order was never appointed by heaven. You were just the watchdogs the System left behind to keep the herd from remembering the gate.”

Noah stopped before the boiling mercury basin, pulling his left hand from his coat pocket.

Beside him, Rin Asakura stepped close into his side, her pale hand holding his with eternal, unbreakable strength. Her crystalline violet eyes shone with absolute, serene devotion as their Ki currents harmonized into a warm, blinding aura of pure silver and starlight-gold.

Noah thrust his bare palm into the boiling mercury vat.

Circulate.

The toxic red mercury did not burn his skin; the moment his flesh made contact, his black ironwood forearm guard flared with brilliant sovereign Ki. The mercury froze into brittle, harmless crystal, shattering outward in a shower of translucent diamond dust.

Noah’s fingers closed firmly around the jagged surface of Record Fragment #039.

DING.

SHING—!

The weeping crimson light vanished, replaced by an incandescent, brilliant flare of pure celestial azure.

Within Noah’s deep consciousness, the obsidian shelves of the Memory Cabinet shuddered and expanded, unlocking the deep administrative codes of the 10th Cycle. Across the entire continent, the artificial mana rifts that had plagued the twelve sectors for five hundred years fell silent, stabilizing into harmless, natural currents of clean earth-mana.

High Pontiff Malachi slumped backward against the dais, his gilded tiara rolling across the tiles as he stared at Noah in stunned, hollow defeat.

Noah drew his hand back, resting the purified crystal within his coat pocket as his fingers found Rin’s awaiting palm once more.

Rin looked up into his face, wrapping both hands gently around his arm, her cheek resting against his rough woolen sleeve. Her violet eyes shone with breathless wonder, radiant pride, and boundless love.

“The poison is gone, Noah…” Rin whispered softly, her breath warm against his coat. “The sky has finally been cleared.”

Noah looked down at her beautiful face, wrapping his arm securely around her waist with quiet, immovable warmth.

“The capital is finished, Rin,” Noah Kurtz said softly, his steel-gray eyes looking out past the shattered doors toward the open horizon. “Now let’s go pack the ship. The final anchors are waiting.”
