INFINITE MEMORIES : MY F-RANK SKILL IS ACTUALLY THE STRONGEST
Chapter 157: SHATTERED ALTAR
Chapter 157: The Shattered Altar Above
The deafening wail of Sector 0’s emergency sirens reverberated through the soaring marble vaults of the Grand Central Basilica.
High above the sanctuary floor, the thousand-faceted crystal chandeliers flickered and died, their consecrated mana supply choked off at the subterranean root. Emergency amber lighting hummed to life along the polished aisles, casting long, frantic shadows across hundreds of silver-armored paladins, corporate oligarchs, and high-ranking guild masters who scrambled in utter disarray. The majestic barrier of pure white light that had shielded the Church’s sovereign district for five centuries was gone, dissipating into the gray morning drizzle outside like vaporized frost.
On the elevated marble dais at the center of the nave, Evelyn Vance stood rigid, her immaculate white-and-silver rapier trembling faintly within its sheath.
Her pale, aristocratic face was drained of all color, her sharp ice-blue eyes fixed in disbelief on the telemetry console embedded in her podium. The grand plenary session had dissolved into chaos before her speech could finish. Every reading across the capital’s central grid was plummeting toward absolute zero.
“Silence! Maintain ranks!” Evelyn’s voice rang out, sharp and imperious, though a thin fracture of panic betrayed her composure. “The Association’s secondary capacitors will engage momentarily! Deploy the vanguard to seal the gates—”
CREAK.
A deep, grinding shudder resonated through the floorboards directly beneath the high altar.
At the center of the consecrated platform, the massive circular flagstone bearing the gilded seal of the First Patriarch shifted. It did not explode under a burst of kinetic violence; it slid smoothly backward with a measured, hydraulic sigh, revealing the dark opening of the subterranean staircase.
From the shadows of the ancient crypt stepped Noah Kurtz.
He walked with his familiar, unhurried slouch, his hands buried deep inside the pockets of his dark woolen coat. His worn collar was turned up against the draft, his ash-black hair shifting lazily as he surveyed the grand cathedral with cool, clinical detachment. Pinned to his left chest lapel directly above his heart, the dark ironwood leaf brooch absorbed the ambient panic of the hall, radiating a tranquil, steady golden pulse into his chest. Beneath his dark sleeves, his black ironwood forearm guards lay dormant, their internal kinetic circuits humming in frictionless, zero-waste equilibrium.
Circulate.
Inside Noah’s core, his 7.20% Memory Cabinet Synchronization sat like immovable bedrock. The newly assimilated Record Fragment #038 (The Prime Tectonic Key) hummed in quiet, absolute harmony with the other five sovereign anchors, extending his sovereign domain across every stone of the cathedral’s foundation. To the high-tier magical scanners frantically sweeping the hall, his presence registered not as an invading army, but as an ancient, unyielding mountain that had simply chosen to stand in their sanctuary.
Walking soundlessly beside him, her slender left hand linked naturally within his right palm, was Rin Asakura.
Rin had pushed back the hood of her dark travel cloak, allowing the white woolen shawl to rest over her shoulders. She wore her ocean-tailored lavender kimono, the deep indigo ribbons fluttering softly with her weightless, soundless steps. Her simple wooden practice sword was secured peacefully at her left hip.
Her crystalline violet eyes looked across the crowded nave, open, unsealed, and brimming with serene light.
Without a silk blindfold, and with the full depth of Asura’s Touch interwoven with her void-sight, Rin mapped every trembling heart in the grand basilica. She saw the fragile, brittle nature of their awakened ranks, the terror churning beneath the corporate executives’ tailored suits, and the unshakeable, infinite warmth radiating from Noah’s hand into hers.
Slowly, Rin leaned her shoulder gently against Noah’s arm, her delicate fingers tightening their warm, devoted grip within his palm.
“The lords have found their voices caught in their throats, Noah…” Rin whispered softly, her melodic, formal cadence carrying an intimate sweetness that cut cleanly through the blaring alarms. “They spent centuries telling the world that their altar was touched by heaven, yet the moment you step upon their stone, they look upon you as if judgment itself has entered the room.”
Noah turned his head, his steel-gray gaze softening with genuine, unshakeable tenderness as he looked down into her clear violet eyes. He gently squeezed her fingers, his thumb caressing the soft curve of her knuckles with quiet warmth.
“They’re terrified because they know who built the floor, Rin,” Noah spoke softly, his flat, rasping whisper carrying the weight of ancient eons. “When you spend five hundred years living in a house you didn’t build, you always dread the day the true owner walks up the steps.”
Rin stepped closer into his space, resting her cheek gently against the rough wool of his sleeve while holding their linked hands against her heart.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
“And the owner has returned, Noah,” Rin murmured softly, her breath warm against his coat, her eyes glowing with absolute, radiant devotion.
Behind them at the top of the stairs, the heavy, rhythmic crunch-slap of rubber soles broke through the shocked silence of the hall.
Jiho Park trudged out of the crypt, dragging his faded, scuffed slide sandals lazily across the consecrated marble as he let out a long, jaw-cracking yawn that echoed like a low clap of thunder. The massive S-Rank Juggernaut had unzipped his yellow rain poncho, revealing his baggy gray sweatpants and his oversized yellow cotton tank top. Balanced over his broad right shoulder was his indestructible canvas duffel bag, packed tight with supplies and heavy refined ore. In his left hand, he held a massive roasted sausage on a wooden skewer, chewing with slow, blissful satisfaction.
“Man,” Jiho mumbled around a mouthful of cured meat, his droopy eyes half-shut as he peered at the rows of terrified paladins with their halberds raised. “Master, this church is huge. Look at all those shiny silver statues. Hey, Alistair, is that your cousin on the stage? She looks like she just bit into a lemon. Master, are these shiny guys going to poke at my duffel bag? I still have two meat buns in here and I’m not sharing.”
“Stand by the pillar, Jiho,” Noah replied smoothly, a dry, subtle smirk touching the corner of his lips. “Nobody is touching your buns.”
“Understood, Master,” Jiho beamed sleepily, lumbering over to lean his massive bulk against a carved marble column. “Perimeter security on lock. Buns protected.”
Strolling lightly out of the stairwell to Noah’s left, Chloe Harrington caught her silver coin with an effortless, rhythmic snap.
Clink.
She wore her dark leather duster unbuttoned over a light linen shirt, her dead platinum revolvers resting quietly in their holsters. Her sharp amber eyes sparkled with brilliant golden probability lines as she surveyed the elevated dais.
“Probability vectors for an armed response: plummeting to nine point two percent, Boss,” Chloe reported with a sharp, rebellious smirk. “Their kinetic halberds drew seventy percent of their charge from the central crypt. Right now, those fancy polearms are basically glorified curtain rods.”
“And look at the worldwide broadcast relays, Boss!” Alistair Vance blurted out, breathlessly jogging out of the staircase while adjusting his brass-rimmed walking spectacles.
Alistair carried his portable espresso rig strapped securely to his chest, clutching a steaming ceramic mug of dark roast in one hand and his glowing holographic datapad in the other. He tapped the screen with frantic academic ecstasy.
“Every emergency monitor in the capital is patched into my feed!” Alistair laughed loudly, taking a scalding sip of coffee. “The entire world is watching the High Sanctum’s altar right now! They were promised an address on how the Church would save the continent, and instead they get to see who actually holds the keys!”
Across the dais, Evelyn Vance took a trembling step backward, her hand gripping the hilt of her rapier so hard her knuckles turned bone-white. Her aristocratic composure completely shattered as her eyes locked onto Noah Kurtz.
“You…” Evelyn choked out, her voice barely a whisper that struggled against the hum of the emergency lights. “Noah Kurtz? The unregistered F-Rank porter from the logistics terminal…? How are you… what have you done to the basilica’s core?!”
Noah didn’t rush to answer. He stood at the center of the altar, his slouching posture relaxed as his hands remained buried inside his dark woolen coat.
His steel-gray eyes met hers, empty of malice, pride, or anger—only the terrifying, infinite calm of the Ashen Sovereign looking upon an ephemeral speck of dust.
“The core was never yours, Evelyn,” Noah spoke flatly, his rasping whisper carrying effortlessly across the vast expanse of the basilica. “You and your family played at being gods on a foundation you didn’t understand. Now the rent is due, and the doors are officially closed.”
Beside him, Rin Asakura stepped close into his side, her pale hand holding his with eternal, unbreakable strength as her crystalline violet eyes shone with quiet pride and radiant devotion.
The silence that followed was absolute—the silence of an entire empire realizing its reign was over.
