<Chapter - 131 Heretic Inquest>

The sub-zero wind howling down from the Great Northern Ridge carried a cutting, crystalline bite that froze moisture in the air before it could touch the earth.

Beyond the ruined perimeter boundaries where the high-sector corporate grid ended, the landscape dissolved into the unforgiving vastness of the Northern Dead Zones. Jagged crags of black iron bedrock and monolithic sheets of prehistoric permafrost stretched toward the horizon under a pale, leaden sky. Towering pine forests, petrified by centuries of localized mana freeze, stood like silent rows of frozen spears along the mountain trails.

Cutting through the deep snowbanks along the ancient ridge path walked Noah Kurtz.

His slouching posture remained entirely unbothered by the biting alpine gale. He wore his worn, dark woolen coat pulled close over his shoulders, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. Ash-black hair shifted lazily across his brow, his steel-gray eyes scanning the white expanses with calm, clinical detachment. Pinned over his left chest lapel, the ironwood leaf brooch absorbed the harsh thermal drag, circulating a faint, steady golden pulse straight into his meridians. Underneath his coat sleeves, his black ironwood forearm guards lay quiet, their internal Ki moving in a seamless, zero-waste loop that masked his kinetic footprint entirely from the open wilderness.

Walking directly beside him, her slender frame leaning comfortably against his arm, was Rin Asakura.

Rin wore a winter-tailored lavender kimono beneath a thick, dark navy travel cloak, a pure white fur collar tucked softly around her slender neck. Her simple wooden practice sword was secured at her left hip, swaying in rhythm with her soundless, weightless steps.

Her crystalline violet eyes looked out across the frozen wastes, clear and unburdened.

Without a silk blindfold, and with the full depth of Asura’s Touch intertwined with her unsealed void-sight, Rin perceived the subtle, terrifying shifts occurring in the northern atmosphere. She didn’t merely see the snow; she felt the invisible, suffocating geometric lines of divine surveillance arrays blanketing the upper clouds.

Slowly, Rin’s pale, delicate fingers slid naturally into Noah’s right palm, interlocking their hands in a quiet, warm grip.

A subtle thread of warm Ki flowed smoothly from Noah’s palm into her meridians, melting the bitter chill before it could numb her skin.

"The sky in the north is heavy with incense and cold iron, Noah..." Rin whispered softly, her melodic, formal cadence carrying an intimate sweetness that touched his ear. "The 4th Sanctum of the Archive Church has cast their judgment across the ridge. They have unrolled their scrolls of heresy, and their diviners are searching the snow for anyone who breathes without their permission."

Noah looked down into her clear violet eyes, his steel-gray gaze softening with quiet, genuine tenderness. He gently squeezed her fingers, his thumb caressing the soft curve of her knuckles.

"The Church only searches when they realize their cage has a loose bar, Rin," Noah spoke softly, his flat, rasping whisper carrying the quiet calm of ancient eons. "They built their cathedrals over the ancient anchors, calling the past holy so they could hoard the keys. When the Gold Key awakened in the south, their high priests felt the foundation shake."

Rin stepped slightly closer into his space, resting her cheek gently against his shoulder while holding his entwined hand against her heart.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

"And now they march south to lock the door," Rin murmured, her breath warm against his coat. "They do not know the key is already walking toward them."

Behind them on the snowy trail, the heavy, rhythmic crunch-slap of rubber soles hitting the frozen crust broke the quiet mountain air.

Jiho Park trudged forward, his faded, scuffed slide sandals cutting through the snowdrifts like an iron plow. The massive S-Rank Juggernaut wore an oversized dark thermal sweater over his baggy gray sweatpants, carrying his colossal canvas duffel bag over his broad right shoulder. He let out a long, jaw-cracking yawn that erupted into a thick plume of white steam, scratching his messy black hair with a thick finger.

"Man," Jiho mumbled around a mouthful of dried spiced beef, blinking lazily at the snow. "Master, this northern breeze is like walking inside an industrial meat locker. It’s making my toes numb. But this dried beef from District 9 is pretty solid. If these church guys try to take my bag, can I throw a boulder at them?"

"Only if they block the road, Jiho," Noah replied smoothly, a dry, subtle smirk touching his lips.

"Understood, Master!" Jiho grinned sleepily, chewing with slow, rhythmic satisfaction. "Perimeter defense only."

"The probability of an encounter within the next twenty minutes is sitting at ninety-eight point four percent, Boss," Chloe Harrington called out, stepping lightly across a frozen granite shelf.

Chloe wore her heavy dark leather duster buttoned against the sub-zero gale, her dead platinum revolvers resting quietly in their holsters. She flipped her silver coin in a glittering, high arc through the falling snowflakes, catching it with an effortless, rhythmic snap. Her amber eyes glowed with sharp, golden mathematical lines as she scanned the white pine canopy ahead.

"A high-tier Inquest vanguard is deploying along the gorge," Chloe reported, a rebellious smirk dancing across her lips. "Six executioners clad in consecrated silver-alloy plate, carrying high-frequency sound-dampening barrier rods. They’re trying to set up an acoustic suppression trap."

"Acoustic suppression?" Alistair Vance blurted out, frantically jogging up the rear while adjusting his brass-rimmed walking spectacles.

Alistair had his portable espresso rig insulated with thermal wool, a steaming ceramic mug clenched tightly in his hand. He held a glowing holographic scanner, furiously analyzing the regional atmospheric waves.

"Boss! It’s the 4th Sanctum Inquest Vanguard!" Alistair warned in a frantic whisper. "They’ve officially issued a continental Level-1 Null-Point Heretic Warrant for the entity who unsealed the Gold Anchor Node! Their barrier rods emit a high-frequency acoustic wave designed to disrupt sensory-type awakeners like Rin’s Asura’s Touch! It overloads the neural pathways with artificial holy static!"

Rin’s brow furrowed slightly as a high-pitched, imperceptible whine began vibrating through the snowy trees ahead. The subtle, piercing frequency struck at the edges of her heightened sensory grid, threatening to cloud her clear perception of the terrain.

Before the acoustic wave could touch her mind, Noah Kurtz’s hand turned.

Circulate.

Underneath his dark sleeve, Noah’s black ironwood forearm guard hummed with an absolute, pure current of Gold Sovereign Ki. He channeled a smooth, zero-friction barrier of refined energy straight through their entwined hands, enveloping Rin’s meridians in a silent, impenetrable sanctuary that completely erased the church’s artificial static.

Rin looked at Noah, the tension melting from her face as her crystalline violet eyes shone with radiant, breathless gratitude. She squeezed his hand tightly, feeling the unyielding, immovable foundation of his presence.

"I hear only your pulse, Noah..." Rin whispered softly, her melodic voice returning to serene, lethal clarity.

"That’s all you need to hear, Rin," Noah spoke calmly, his steel-gray eyes locking onto the snowy clearing fifty paces ahead.

SHING—!

Six figures clad in gleaming silver plate armor and white silk tabards dropped from the pine boughs, landing in a perfect hexagonal formation across the road.

In their hands, they held seven-foot silver-iron lances engraved with shifting divine runes, their visors glowing with pale, fanatical white light.

"Halt, drifters of the lower rim!" the lead Inquisitor commanded, his voice amplified by a resonance seal.

The Inquisitor slammed the butt of his silver lance into the permafrost, unleashing a localized shockwave of white divine mana. He pointed a gauntleted finger directly at Noah’s dark coat.

"By decree of Cardinal Malachi and the High Sanctum, the northern pass is under sacred quarantine! All travelers must submit their souls to the Inquest Sealing Grid! Unregistered F-rank vermin who walk the path of heretics will be cleansed into ash!"

Noah Kurtz didn’t break his unhurried slouch. He didn’t draw a dagger, nor did his expression shift by a fraction of a millimeter.

"Jiho," Noah spoke flatly, stepping calmly toward the silver lances.

"On it, Master!" Jiho Park grinned sleepily, taking one last bite of dried beef before casually stepping forward in his scuffed slide sandals.

[Absolute Inertia: Mountain Stance]

The lead Inquisitor thrust his high-frequency divine lance straight toward Jiho’s chest with blinding speed.

CLANG—!

The consecrated silver lance struck Jiho square in the center of his chest. The divine mana flared violently, sparking against his skin—and then shattered into jagged silver shards. The kinetic whiplash surged straight up the Inquisitor’s arm, dislocating his shoulder with a sickening CRACK as the armored warrior was thrown twenty feet into the snow.

"What in the divine heavens—?!" the remaining five Inquisitors shrieked in sheer, existential terror.

Noah Kurtz glided smoothly past the shattered lance with Ashen Step, his boots leaving zero marks upon the virgin snow.

Holding Rin’s hand securely in his grip, Noah looked toward the towering, snow-covered cathedrals of the 4th Sanctum rising along the distant northern horizon.

"Let’s go, Rin," Noah Kurtz said quietly, his steel-gray eyes cold and immovable. "The Silver Vault is waiting."
