Chapter 441: 441 | The Star Power Synergy

Kumiko’s scream punched through eight acoustic panels and made it into the hallway anyway.

Somewhere past 406, a door opened, held for three seconds, and closed. Miss Valentine had completed her audit and returned to whatever she baked on Wednesdays.

"She thinks someone’s dying in here," Chloe said.

"She thought that in January. Then she brought snickerdoodles."

Kumiko had both hands clamped over her own mouth, which did nothing, because the sound was coming out through her fingers in a continuous thin whistle. Her chair had rotated ninety degrees without her noticing. One cat ear on the headphones sat crooked from where she’d shoved them off her head.

"Sorry," she managed. "Sorry. I’m containing it. I’m a professional. Watch me be a professional."

She lasted four seconds before she started typing at a speed that made the desk shake.

"Okay, so, Friday. Friday means I need the overlay commissioned tonight, because Yuna-san needs seventy-two hours minimum and she gets passive-aggressive if you rush her, and I would rather die than receive passive-aggressive art. I’m emailing her now. I’m attaching the frame. Chloe-chan, is it okay if I attach the frame where your eyes are closed, because that’s the one, that’s the whole thumbnail, I don’t want to argue about it."

"Attach it."

"I’m also doing a countdown post Thursday morning at nine-fifteen, which is when my engagement peaks, and Lila’s going to raid us at the top of the hour because I already asked her and she said, quote, fine, obviously." Kumiko didn’t look up. "She also said something about your voice that I’m not repeating because you’ll get weird about it."

Chloe lowered herself back onto the stool. She hooked her heels around the bottom rung and pulled her sleeves down over her hands, which was the closest thing she had to a tell that wasn’t her jaw.

"My channel has twelve followers, Kumiko."

"Thirteen. Ava followed us on Monday and then apologized in four paragraphs."

Jordan let the door frame take his weight again and watched Chloe do arithmetic. He could see it happening behind her face, the numbers dropping into columns, the runway shortening, the thing she wanted sitting on top of a spreadsheet that did not have room for it.

His phone buzzed twice against his hip.

"I’m going to grab water," he said.

Neither of them answered. Kumiko was reading her email draft aloud to herself, and Chloe was already asking her about audio bitrate under raid conditions.

The hallway was empty and smelled like lemon cleaner. Jordan pulled the door most of the way shut behind him, leaned on the brick between 403 and 404, and looked at his screen.

The gold came up brighter than he expected.

✨ PERFORMANCE SYNERGY DETECTED ✨

Trait Interaction Logged: Couple’s Resonance + Registered Partner

Effect Classification: Amplified

Host proximity to a registered partner engaged in authentic emotional expression increases perceived sincerity, tonal warmth, and audience retention metrics substantially. Effect scales directly with chemistry percentage.

Current Multiplier:

Chloe Kim — 100% Chemistry → Maximum Amplification

(System Note: You did not give her the voice. You are a room she can be honest in. Please do not become insufferable about this. You are already trending in that direction.)

⚠️ WARNING: Public deployment will generate significant attention. Prepare accordingly.

Jordan read it three times, and each pass took something out of his chest and put something worse back in.

He had been in the room. That was all he’d done. He’d crouched in front of her and dropped his voice into that register and told her the camera didn’t exist, and then she’d opened her mouth and the pressure in the studio had changed, and he had felt it in his ears like descending in a plane.

He had assumed that was her.

Maybe it had been her. Maybe he was a pane of glass she’d finally been able to sing through.

The screen scrolled on its own.

🎯 NEW QUEST: STAR POWER

Objective: StellarNote reaches 1,000 Twitch followers during first public broadcast.

Time Limit: One stream.

Rewards: 25 Quest Tickets 🎫, Music Production Suite (Legendary Item)

Failure Penalty: None. (The disappointment will be sufficient.)

Thirteen followers. One thousand by Friday night.

Jordan put his head back against the brick and did the thing Chloe would do, which was refuse to feel anything about a number until he had checked the number. Kumiko’s ten thousand. Lila’s seventeen-two. A raid at the top of the hour into a channel with a Valentine’s Day debut and a girl whose voice made a Fine Arts major cry in a hallway.

It was possible. It required almost everything to land correctly, and it was possible.

He closed the notification and stood in the hallway with his thumb over the dark screen, and understood that he now knew one thing Chloe did not know about her own voice.

Rule five was written in a document on her laptop. She had typed it herself, on her couch, with a pen tucked behind her ear and Kumiko’s knee against her thigh.

Nobody lies to each other.

He went back inside.

Kumiko had progressed to a second monitor and was color-picking the blue in Chloe’s hair streak to match the overlay accent. Chloe had turned the stool to face the door before he’d finished opening it.

"You checked your phone."

"I checked my phone."

"You were gone a hundred and forty seconds and you didn’t come back with water." She sat very still. "What did it say."

Kumiko’s typing stopped.

Jordan pulled the second stool out from under the desk, sat, and put his elbows on his knees so their eyes were level. Then he told her.

He told her about Couple’s Resonance, which he’d pulled from a bronze box weeks ago and filed under mildly useful because it had sounded like relationship counseling. He told her the app had flagged the interaction tonight, that his presence in a room where she was being honest made the honesty land harder on anyone listening, and that the multiplier ran off her chemistry number, which had been sitting at one hundred percent since she’d looked at him in this building and said something he still thought about at two in the morning.

He told her about the quest. The thousand followers. The legendary item at the end of it.

Chloe didn’t move for a while. Kumiko had both hands in her lap and was watching her like a woman waiting for a verdict on a house she’d already moved into.

"So it wasn’t me," Chloe said.
