Chapter 410: 410 | Previous Baseline Measurements

"You’re managing my family."

"Someone has to manage them. You’ve been dodging phone calls for three weeks because an app on your phone said something about family buffs." She returned her attention to the screen, fingers resuming their rhythm across the keyboard.

"Your mother is going to cry the second she sees you. Your father is going to stay quiet through most of dinner and then corner you near the end to ask about your finances. Cassie is going to pepper you with seventeen different questions in the first four minutes and at least fourteen of them are going to circle back to money somehow. You need actual answers ready for the financial interrogation and you need to deflect the emotional mining expedition to me because I’m significantly better at performing feelings for a live studio audience."

Jordan moved to perch on the arm of the couch, watching her work. The blue streak woven through her hair picked up the laptop’s glow and transformed it into something electric and alive.

Her glasses had slipped down to rest on the bridge of her nose at that specific angle that meant she’d been wearing them since he left for the gym and completely forgot to take them off when she heard the door open.

One leg was tucked beneath her in a fold while the other stretched across the cushion, his borrowed shirt riding up just enough to expose the curve of skin above her hip where the harbor light painted it silver.

This woman was going to be the mother of his child. This person who turned bathtubs into revenue streams and managed his family’s emotional landscape through carefully crafted text messages. Who colonized every bed she slept in by spreading diagonally across its entire surface. Who had constructed a spreadsheet tab labeled NOVEMBER and pressed her lips to his palm in a bathroom at one in the morning and explained to him that the universe operated according to supply and demand principles.

"Chloe."

"What."

"There’s something I haven’t told you and I need to say it now before we drive to my parents’ house on Saturday."

The typing ceased. The apartment went silent enough that he could hear Kumiko’s music bleeding through the shared wall, something gentle and Japanese that she played when she was deep into a sewing project. Which meant Kumiko was already hunched over her cosplay station at eleven in the morning on a Monday because Kumiko existed outside the normal rules governing human perception of time.

"The family attraction thing," Jordan said. "I’ve been processing it incorrectly."

Chloe closed the laptop about halfway, which translated to approximately sixty percent of her focus being redirected his direction with the remaining forty held in tactical reserve in case his mother’s response required immediate crisis management. "I’m listening."

"The trait amplifies passive attraction with registered family members. Passive. That specific word appears in the trait description." He spoke slowly because he’d been rotating this sentence through his mind for three solid weeks and it had only crystallized into clarity this morning when Maya’s hand closed around his throat in the ring and he’d read her incoming feint without hesitation.

"The System doesn’t manufacture attraction from vacuum. It doesn’t create something that isn’t already present in some form. Tune Up didn’t transform me into someone hot, it revealed what my body’s actual baseline was supposed to be if I hadn’t spent four months systematically poisoning it with Red Bull and Uber Eats. Alluring Whisper didn’t install a completely new voice in my throat, it took the one I already had and optimized its frequency range. Every single trait in the System operates on the same fundamental principle. Enhancement of existing material, not spontaneous generation from absolute zero."

Chloe’s face moved through something that might’ve been an expression change if you were tracking with calipers. "Keep going."

"I don’t have romantic feelings for my sister. I don’t have romantic feelings for my mother. The trait amplifies existing structures, and what exists between us is familial affection and periodic annoyance and the particular brand of shame that accompanies three weeks of ignored FaceTime notifications from your mom." Jordan’s hands met in his lap and he compressed them together until the circulation situation became concerning.

"The buff examines whatever foundation is already present and increases its amplitude. When the foundation is sibling dynamics, the amplification affects sibling dynamics. If the foundation contained something else entirely, the trait would enhance that alternate configuration instead, but the foundation doesn’t contain alternate configurations because my neural pathways aren’t constructed that direction and the trait operates through enhancement protocols rather than reconstruction protocols."

"You arrived at this conclusion today."

"Maya compressed my trachea at six-thirty this morning and I identified a feint pattern before my conscious processing caught up. Three weeks of ring work and I’m anticipating sequences that require months of standard development time for most fighters. The trait enhances pre-existing capacity. My reflexes were buried beneath four months of voluntary atrophy and the Tune Up excavated them back to functional baseline. Identical operational logic. Identical underlying mechanism."

He separated his hands and examined them, the knuckles still displaying reduced color from sustained pressure. "The Oedipus trait is going to intensify my mother’s physical affection when it occurs. It’s going to increase the psychological impact of Cassandra’s approval or disapproval. It might transform family dinners into events that feel electrically charged in ways they historically haven’t, where standard conversational exchanges suddenly carry disproportionate emotional mass, and I might exit Saturday’s gathering feeling like I sustained blunt force trauma because my family’s emotional transmissions are going to penetrate deeper than previous baseline measurements. But it’s not going to alter the fundamental categorical structure of how I relate to my sister."

Chloe opened the laptop fully and typed one sentence. Then she closed it again and set it on the cushion beside her hip, removing her glasses and folding them with the precise care she applied to lease documents and operating agreements.

"Jordan."

"What."

"That’s the smartest thing you’ve said since I met you, and I’m including the debate."
