Chapter 340: 340 | He Comes Home To Both of Us [CASTLE BONUS]
Kumiko’s entire body went rigid. The towel shifted on her chest and she grabbed it with one hand, her knuckles white against the terrycloth. Water dripped from her hair onto the concrete in a slow, irregular beat.
Chloe held out her hand.
The bathroom was four steps from the kitchen island. Kumiko covered the distance in a shuffle that suggested her legs had received contradictory instructions from a brain running on pure adrenaline and the residual fumes of a Headpat delivered ninety minutes ago. She stopped within arm’s reach, and Chloe’s hand found the wet hair at the side of her face and tucked it behind Kumiko’s ear with a tenderness that had no business existing in the same person who’d just quoted a customer acquisition funnel using her boyfriend’s romantic relationships.
"You heard the plan," Chloe said.
Kumiko’s throat moved. "Disneyland."
"Not that plan."
"The... the other plan." Her eyes slid to Jordan, then away, then back, three separate decisions happening across her face in rapid succession. "The Eliza plan."
"Yes."
"Chloe-chan, I don’t—" Her voice cracked on the honorific. "I don’t want to lose him."
"You won’t."
"You don’t know that."
"I do know that." Chloe’s hand moved from Kumiko’s hair to her chin, tilting her face up so their eyes met. "Because I’m the one who gets to decide, and I already decided, and the decision is that he comes home to both of us. Every single time. No exceptions."
Kumiko’s lower lip trembled, and the motion carried enough potential emotional shrapnel to dismantle a man whose current structural integrity hadn’t already been severely compromised by the residual taste of Chloe’s tongue on his and the visual input of Kumiko standing three feet away wearing nothing but an oversized white bath towel that did not fully conceal the upper curve of her breasts or the water still running in visible streams from the hollow of her throat down toward the terrycloth edge tucked between her collarbones.
Jordan’s brain attempted to process this information. His brain failed. The [Headpat] trait had done its work and now the fallout was his problem to navigate.
"Promise me," Kumiko said, and the words came out so small they barely qualified as audible. "Please."
Chloe’s grip on Jordan’s wrist had not loosened at all during the last forty-five seconds. She was anchoring him in place. Making sure he understood the stakes.
"Kumi-chan," Chloe said, and her voice had returned to the same gentle firmness she’d used earlier when she was explaining why the customer retention metrics on Eliza’s emotional infrastructure made her an ideal second slot candidate. "Go get dressed before you drip water all over my lease paperwork."
Kumiko stood there for one more second, two, three, long enough for Jordan to see her expression cycle through something that looked like fear and hope and uncertainty all compressed into a single facial configuration, and then she nodded and turned and retreated toward the bathroom.
The door clicked shut behind her.
The lock engaged with a soft mechanical snap.
Jordan could hear her breathing on the other side of the barrier, fast and shallow and uneven, the distinctive acoustic signature of someone attempting to process an emotion their therapist probably had a clinical term for but which Kumiko’s brain had filed under "too much, too fast, too real, help."
Chloe turned back to face him.
Her expression had shifted into something he couldn’t immediately catalog.
"Nine-oh-four," she said.
"Nine-oh-four."
"White t-shirt. Thursday."
"White t-shirt. Thursday."
"Come to bed when she’s done hyperventilating." Chloe picked up her laptop from the box by the door and walked toward the stairs, and the factory windows behind her framed her silhouette in harbor light, and the henley rode up the back of her thighs with every step, and Jordan watched her climb to the loft and disappear above the railing without looking back.
At nine-oh-four PM exactly, Jordan unzipped his gym bag, pulled out his phone, and opened Eliza’s messages.
5:04 PM — Thanks for today. I know I don’t deserve your time but I’m grateful for it.
5:06 PM — No pressure to respond. I just wanted you to know.
He typed one sentence. Read it twice. Sent it.
Thursday 2pm, same room. Bring the updated bibliography.
He locked the phone and set it on the nightstand facedown.
From the loft, he could hear Chloe breathing, already asleep or pretending to be. From the bathroom, nothing. Kumiko had gone silent twelve minutes ago, which meant she was either writing in her notebook or standing in front of the mirror counting the marks on her own collarbone and adding them to her documentation.
Jordan climbed the stairs in the dark. The mattress was bare because the fitted sheet was in the dryer and nobody had remembered to pull it out, so he lay down on the raw quilted surface and stared at the ceiling where the amber harbor light drew long parallelograms across the exposed beams. Chloe’s hand found his forearm and stayed there, her fingers curling around the muscle without gripping, just holding, the way you’d hold a rope when you weren’t afraid of falling but wanted to feel it in your palm anyway.
Twenty minutes later the bathroom lock clicked. Soft footsteps on concrete. The creak of the stairs.
Kumiko appeared at the top of the loft in Jordan’s gray henley and pink sleep shorts, her hair still damp, her face scrubbed raw and bare. She stood at the foot of the mattress and didn’t speak.
Chloe shifted. Made room. Patted the space between herself and Jordan once, flat-palmed, the way you’d pat a seat on a bus.
Kumiko climbed onto the bare mattress and fit herself into the gap, pulling her knees up and pressing her back against Jordan’s side and her forehead against Chloe’s shoulder. She smelled like his shampoo and her strawberry conditioner and something underneath both of those that was just Kumiko, warm and small and so present it almost hurt.
Jordan put his arm over both of them.
Chloe’s hand found Kumiko’s hand found Jordan’s shirt found the space where all three of them existed on a mattress with no sheets in an apartment that was technically his but functionally theirs, surrounded by boxes that contained an entire life being rebuilt from components, and outside the factory windows the Pacific Ocean did whatever the Pacific Ocean did at ten o’clock on a Sunday night in February, which was be very large and very dark and completely unconcerned with the people sleeping beside it.
His phone glowed once, on the nightstand, gold, and went dark.
