Jason zoomed in on the photograph again.

The image was grainy.

The café window reflected the afternoon light badly.

But the person across the street was unmistakable.

Someone had been holding a phone.

Pointing it directly at him.

And Sarah.

Jason stared at it until his eyes began to hurt.

Then he opened his chat with Kyle.

Jason: Where did you get this?

The reply came almost immediately.

Kyle: What?

Jason sent the photograph.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Kyle: You still have that?

Jason: Answer the question.

A longer pause.

Kyle: Someone sent it to me.

Jason sat up.

Jason: Who?

Kyle: I don't know.

Jason: Kyle.

Kyle: I'm serious.

Jason stared at the screen.

His fingers moved quickly.

Jason: When did you get it?

Kyle: I think the day after.

Jason's expression changed.

The day after their first date.

Not months later.

Not recently.

The next day.

Jason: And you never thought that was weird?

Kyle: I thought someone was messing around.

Jason: Why would someone send you a picture of me?

Kyle: Because you're you?

Jason: That's not an answer.

Kyle: I don't know, man.

Jason put the phone down.

His thoughts were running in circles.

Someone had photographed him and Sarah.

Then sent the photograph to Kyle.

Kyle had kept it.

Months later, rumors began circulating.

Then Vivian started receiving anonymous messages.

Then Marcus became involved.

And somewhere in the middle of all of it, the café employee appeared.

Jason picked up the phone again.

Jason: Did the person who sent it say anything?

Kyle: Yeah.

Jason froze.

Jason: What?

Kyle: Just one thing.

Jason waited.

Kyle: "Keep an eye on him."

Jason stared at the screen.

His stomach tightened.

He called Kyle.

The phone rang twice.

Kyle answered.

"What's wrong?"

Jason didn't waste time.

"You told me someone sent you that picture."

"Yeah."

"And they told you to keep an eye on me?"

"Yeah."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Silence.

Then Kyle sighed.

"Because I thought it was stupid."

Jason stood from his bed.

"You thought someone secretly photographing me and sending it to you was stupid?"

"I didn't know they were secretly photographing you!"

"You literally just said the picture came from someone."

"I thought it was some random person!"

Jason rubbed his forehead.

"Do you still have the original message?"

"No."

Jason stopped.

"What?"

"I changed phones."

"When?"

"Months ago."

Jason closed his eyes.

Of course.

Of course the one thing that could have helped had disappeared.

Then Kyle spoke again.

"But I remember the account."

Jason opened his eyes.

"What account?"

"The person who sent it."

"What was the name?"

"I don't remember exactly."

"Try."

Kyle went quiet.

"Something like... North."

Jason frowned.

"North?"

"Yeah."

"That's it?"

"I think so."

Jason looked toward his window.

"Was it a normal account?"

"I don't know."

"Profile picture?"

"No."

"Followers?"

"I never checked."

Jason sighed.

"Anything else?"

Kyle hesitated.

Then said:

"They knew your name."

Jason's expression hardened.

"They knew my name?"

"Yeah."

"Not your username?"

"No."

"My actual name?"

"Yes."

Jason said nothing.

Kyle continued.

"They wrote your full name."

Jason's grip tightened around the phone.

Someone had known his name.

Someone had photographed him.

Someone had known Sarah.

And this had happened before the first anonymous message.

Before Vivian.

Before Daniel.

Before Marcus.

This wasn't an escalation.

It was a continuation.

---

Jason met Sarah that evening.

She noticed his expression the moment she opened the door.

"That bad?"

Jason stepped inside.

"I found something."

Sarah closed the door.

"What?"

Jason showed her the photograph.

She stared.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then:

"That was taken from across the street."

Jason nodded.

"You remember this?"

"Our first date."

"Yeah."

Sarah looked at the person in the reflection.

"Who is that?"

"I don't know."

He told her about Kyle.

About the message.

About the words.

Sarah's expression slowly changed.

"Keep an eye on him?"

Jason nodded.

She looked at him.

"Why would someone tell Kyle to watch you?"

"I don't know."

Sarah walked toward the couch.

Then stopped.

"Wait."

Jason looked at her.

"What?"

She frowned.

"There was something else that day."

Jason's mind immediately focused.

"What?"

Sarah sat down.

"After we left the café."

Jason waited.

"You remember that little bookstore?"

"Yeah."

"We walked past it."

"Yeah."

"There was a guy standing outside."

Jason frowned.

"I don't remember."

"I didn't either until now."

Sarah rubbed her forehead.

"He was smoking."

Jason stared at her.

"And?"

"He looked at us."

"That happens."

"I know."

She shook her head.

"But when we passed him, he said something."

Jason's expression sharpened.

"What?"

Sarah looked at him.

"He said my name."

Silence.

Jason's heart sank.

"What exactly?"

"I don't remember."

"Try."

Sarah closed her eyes.

Then slowly opened them.

"It was something like..."

She paused.

"'Sarah?'"

Jason stared at her.

"You're sure?"

"No."

Sarah shook her head.

"I'm not completely sure."

Jason sat beside her.

"But you remember someone saying your name."

"Yes."

"On our first date."

"Yes."

Neither spoke.

The photograph suddenly felt heavier.

Jason looked down at it.

There had been someone across the street.

Someone inside the café.

And possibly someone else outside the bookstore.

Three separate points.

One afternoon.

Maybe coincidence.

Maybe not.

His phone vibrated.

Jason checked it.

[Phase Four Progress: 31%.]

He frowned.

Sarah noticed.

"It went up again?"

"Yeah."

"How much?"

"Four percent."

Sarah looked at the photograph.

"Because we remembered something?"

Jason nodded.

Another notification appeared.

[Historical Observation Chain expanded.]

Jason's eyes narrowed.

Then:

[The Host was not the original subject of observation.]

Jason stopped breathing.

"What?"

Sarah looked at him.

"What happened?"

Jason read it again.

[The Host was not the original subject of observation.]

He looked at Sarah.

Then back at the screen.

If he wasn't the original subject...

Who was?

Jason slowly lowered the phone.

"Sarah."

"What?"

"I think this started before me."

She stared at him.

"What do you mean?"

"The person watching us may not have originally been watching me."

Sarah's face became serious.

"Then who?"

Jason looked at her.

"I think they were watching you."

Sarah went completely still.

---

The next morning, Jason didn't go to the café.

He went somewhere else.

The bookstore.

He stood across the street, staring at the entrance.

Nothing.

No suspicious cars.

No familiar faces.

No mysterious men smoking.

Just people walking in and out.

Jason felt ridiculous.

He almost left.

Then someone stepped outside.

A woman.

She looked around.

Then locked the door.

Jason frowned.

Something about her felt familiar.

Not her face.

The way she moved.

He had seen her before.

Jason searched his memory.

Then it clicked.

She had been at the café.

On his first date.

She had been sitting near the window.

Jason remembered because she had looked at Sarah several times.

His heart started beating faster.

He immediately took out his phone.

He took a picture.

The woman suddenly looked toward him.

Jason froze.

Their eyes met.

For one second, neither moved.

Then she walked away.

Jason followed.

Not closely.

Just enough to keep her in sight.

She turned down a side street.

Jason followed.

She stopped beside a parked car.

Someone was sitting inside.

The passenger door opened.

The woman got in.

The car drove away.

Jason stood there.

He hadn't learned who she was.

But he had learned something else.

The car was black.

Not the same sedan from the café.

A different one.

Jason looked at his phone.

The system notification appeared.

[Observation Chain confirmed.]

[Phase Four Progress: 35%.]

Then another line appeared.

[Warning.]

[The Host is investigating the correct direction.]

Jason's eyes narrowed.

"That sounds like a compliment."

The system gave him no response.

He stared at the road where the car had disappeared.

Then his phone vibrated again.

This time, it wasn't the system.

It was Vivian.

Vivian: Jason, I found something about Marcus.

Jason immediately called her.

She answered.

"Hello?"

"What happened?"

"I didn't want to text this."

"Tell me."

Vivian lowered her voice.

"I talked to Marcus."

"And?"

"He admitted he has been giving someone information."

Jason's expression hardened.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Vivian."

"He doesn't know their name."

Jason's eyes narrowed.

"Then what does he know?"

A pause.

"He said the person never contacted him directly."

Jason frowned.

"What?"

"They used someone else."

"Who?"

Vivian hesitated.

Then said:

"The café employee."

Jason went silent.

Vivian continued.

"Marcus said the café guy would casually ask questions."

"About me?"

"About all of us."

Jason looked toward the road.

"What kind of questions?"

"Whether you were still with Sarah."

Jason's jaw tightened.

"Anything else?"

"Yes."

"What?"

Vivian's voice became quieter.

"He asked Marcus whether Sarah had ever told us about someone named Daniel."

Jason froze.

Daniel.

The same Daniel who had reacted badly to Vivian's rejection.

The same Daniel who had later apologized.

The same Daniel who had apparently been talking about Jason.

Jason's mind connected the pieces.

Maybe Daniel wasn't the person behind this.

Maybe he had simply been another person receiving information.

Another piece on the board.

Another door.

Jason looked at the empty road.

"Vivian."

"Yeah?"

"Don't confront Marcus again."

"Why?"

"Because I think we're looking at this wrong."

"How?"

Jason stared at the photograph still open on his phone.

"We've been looking for the person sending the messages."

He paused.

"I think we should be looking for the person collecting the information."

Silence.

Then Vivian said quietly:

"That makes sense."

Jason looked at the photograph.

The unknown person across the street.

The café employee.

Marcus.

Daniel.

Kyle.

The woman from the bookstore.

Too many people.

Too many connections.

And somewhere in the middle of them was someone who had been watching long before Jason ever realized he was being watched.

His phone vibrated.

[Phase Four Progress: 37%.]

[New Objective.]

[Determine what the Observer wants.]

Jason stared at the final line.

For the first time since the mystery began, he realized something terrifying.

Finding the Observer might not be the hardest part.

Figuring out why they had been watching them could be much worse.
