Chapter 96: The Central Focus, Three Talents United

  • Next Chapter

Tobias stood guard at the chamber entrance while Serah began her analysis of the crystal’s molecular structure. Alvian sat beside the slab, letting his Clearwater resonance synchronize with its dimensional frequency.

The pylon chord hummed around them. Eight notes of a twelve-note chord. The heart waited to be forged. Four pylons remained. And the most complex creation Alvian had ever attempted was about to begin.

’Foundation stones. That’s what these pre-Cataclysm builders called them. Anchor stones for dimensional energy. The buildings were rooted in them. The buildings lived through them.’

’When the Cataclysm severed that connection, the buildings died. But the stones kept waiting. Three hundred years of patience. Three hundred years of memory.’

’And now they’re going to heal people.’

---

The crystal slab waited.

Alvian knelt before it in the predawn darkness. The eight completed pylons hummed their incomplete chord around him. Through the holes in the ceiling, stars were fading into grey. Dawn was coming. They had maybe four hours before the Academy’s morning patrols would notice activity in the medical wing ruins.

Four hours. Enough. Maybe.

Serah knelt across from him, her pad displaying the molecular specifications for the central focus. "The focus needs to do three things simultaneously. First, dissolve damaged tissue within its field. That’s your Clearwater resonance. Second, read the body’s original molecular template from dimensional memory stored in the patient’s DNA and cellular structure. Third, guide reformation toward wholeness. That’s your Reformation aspect."

She zoomed in on the specifications. "The crystal’s existing Essence saturation helps with the second function. It’s been absorbing dimensional memory for three centuries. It can read templates because that’s what dimensional crystal does. Your Clearwater resonance handles the dissolution. Your Reformation capability handles the rebuilding."

She looked up. "But the integration requires something you haven’t attempted. Combining all three aspects of your Talent. Clearwater. Dissolution. Reformation. Into a single forged object."

"Previous creations used one or two aspects."

"This one needs all three."

Three Talent aspects, each with its own frequency, its own resonance pattern, its own molecular signature. He had used them in sequence during Tobias’s arm. Dissolve, then rebuild. Two separate operations.

This was different. This was dissolve, read, and rebuild simultaneously. Three operations compressed into one. Three frequencies harmonized into a single chord.

’I don’t know if I can do this.’

He placed both palms on the crystal slab.

The Molecular Forge activated at full intensity.

His awareness plunged into the crystal’s structure. Not surface-level. Deep. Every molecule. Every bond. Every stored Essence pattern accumulated over three hundred years of dimensional absorption. The crystal’s memory unfolded around him like a book opening, page after page of pre-Cataclysm data he couldn’t read but could feel.

He didn’t just reshape the crystal. He imprinted it. His Clearwater resonance seeped into the molecular lattice, staining it with dissolution capability. His Dissolution aspect followed, deeper, touching the dimensional layers beneath physical matter. And then, finally, the Reformation aspect. The newest part of his Talent. The one that had evolved when the System had recognized that dissolution without creation was just destruction.

Three frequencies. Three resonances. Three aspects of a single Talent trying to harmonize.

They fought each other.

The Clearwater resonance wanted to dissolve. The Dissolution aspect wanted to dissolve harder. The Reformation aspect wanted to rebuild. The conflict created molecular chaos. The crystal’s structure began to vibrate dangerously, cracks threatening to form.

The frequencies weren’t conflicting. They were competing. Each aspect was trying to dominate instead of harmonize. He needed to find the balance point. The frequency where all three aspects reinforced instead of canceled.

Serah’s voice came from very far away. "Your Essence is dropping. Seventy percent. Sixty-five."

He ignored her. The balance point was there. Somewhere in the interference patterns, somewhere in the harmonic convergence of three competing frequencies. His mind raced through calculations. Clearwater at frequency X. Dissolution at frequency Y. Reformation at frequency Z. The harmony point was where X, Y, and Z created constructive interference.

There.

He adjusted the resonance. Not forcing the aspects to align. Letting them find their natural harmony. The Clearwater resonance softened. The Dissolution aspect deepened. The Reformation aspect spread. And where they met, the crystal’s molecular structure began to transform.

The slab was becoming something new.

Not just crystal. Not just a focus. A living lattice, interwoven with three aspects of dissolution and creation. The crystal’s stored dimensional memory provided the template-reading capability. The Clearwater resonance provided the dissolution capability. The Reformation aspect provided the rebuilding capability. All three, unified in a single forged object.

"Your Essence is at forty percent," Serah said. She was worried. He could hear it in her voice like he could hear the pylon chord around him. "Alvian, you’ve been at this for two hours. You need to rest."

He didn’t respond. The forging trance had taken him somewhere else. Somewhere deep inside the crystal’s structure, where molecular bonds and dimensional memory and Talent resonance all merged into a single reality.

The hours passed. Serah monitored his Essence levels, forcing Wendell Pike’s restoration potions into his mouth at intervals. Tobias paced the chamber entrance, his new arm flexing with nervous energy. The pylons hummed their incomplete chord. And Alvian forged.

Four hours.

When he emerged from the trance, the first thing he saw was dawn light streaming through the holes in the ceiling. The second thing he saw was the central focus.

It was beautiful.

A meter-wide sphere of crystal, perfectly clear, with veins of faint blue energy tracing its interior like circuitry. The blue veins pulsed with a rhythm he recognized immediately.

His heartbeat.

The focus was synchronized to his Talent. Not just aligned. Not just compatible. Synchronized. The focus would beat when his heart beat. It would dissolve when he dissolved. It would reform when he reformed. It was, in every way that mattered, an extension of himself.

The reels blurred. The cosmic wheel’s symbols streaked past in the dim dawn light. Bronze. Silver. Gold. Each symbol carrying the weight of probability and the promise of creation.

The reels slowed.

[Quality assessment: EXCEPTIONAL]

[The central focus is complete.]

[The System notes that this is the first creation integrating all three Talent aspects.]

[The System also notes that the Host has now experienced his Talent as unified rather than fragmented.]

[This is significant.]

[The Clearwater/Dissolution/Reformation trinity works as one.]

[The System is experiencing something it believes might be called "pride."]

[The System is choosing to embrace this emotion.]

[The System is also noting that the Host’s Essence is critically low.]

[Essence: 23/287]

[The System suggests the Host drink the potion Serah is currently holding in front of his face.]

Alvian blinked. Serah was indeed holding a potion vial in front of his face. Her expression was somewhere between scientific wonder and profound concern.

"You synchronized it to your heartbeat," she said. "The focus is pulsing with your cardiac rhythm. When you placed your hands on it, the molecular structure reorganized to match your Talent’s frequency signature. It’s not just a focus. It’s an extension of your nervous system."

"Is that bad?"

"It’s unprecedented. Nothing in the pre-Cataclysm records describes Talent-crystal synchronization at this level." She paused. "It means the focus will work with you specifically. No one else can use it. No one else can even activate it. It’s bonded to you."

’Then I better stay alive to run it.’

Tobias approached, his new arm reaching out to touch the sphere. The crawler crystal joints in his prosthetic hummed in response. "This thing feels alive. Not mechanical. Not constructed. Like it grew."

"It kind of did." Alvian stood on legs that trembled from four hours of sustained forging. "I didn’t build it. I grew it. The crystal had three centuries of stored dimensional memory. I just gave it a shape to grow into."

The sphere pulsed. Blue veins brightened for a moment. The twelve pylon sites on the floor seemed to respond, the chalk marks glowing faintly with sympathetic resonance.

"We have the heart," Alvian said. "Now we need to finish the body. Four more pylons. Then the circuit integration."

Serah checked her pad. "Your Essence is at twenty-three. You need at least two hundred to complete the remaining pylons."

"How long?"

"At your regeneration rate of two point five per minute? About seventy minutes."

Tobias looked at the light streaming through the ceiling. "Dawn patrol is in forty minutes. We need to move."

"Then we come back tonight," Alvian said. "The focus is secured. The pylons are stable. Nothing here is going anywhere."

He touched the sphere one more time. The crystal pulsed against his palm, warm and alive. Three hundred years of patience, given form and purpose in four hours of creation.

’Eight pylons. One heart. Four notes missing from the chord. Tonight, we finish it.’
