Chapter 61: The Epic Roll, Level Fifty to Sixty-Eight

His Essence was getting low. He switched from Severing Sword Aura to Clearwater Palm for most kills, saving the expensive air blades for groups. Clearwater Palm cost almost nothing. It ran on Talent resonance, not Essence reserves.

[Kill count: 1,000. Pool: 30,000 base EXP.]

[Essence: 18 → 15.]

One thousand kills. The courtyard was nearly clear. The Rift was still open, but the flow of beasts had reduced to a trickle. The Colossus stood motionless behind the remaining horde, its six eyes fixed on Alvian with an intelligence that shouldn’t exist in a dimensional beast.

[Kill count: 2,000. Pool: 60,000 base EXP.]

Two thousand. The slurry on the courtyard floor was ankle deep in places. Students who had been watching from cover were either vomiting, crying, or staring in numb silence. The smell was chemical and clean, like a laboratory after an experiment gone wrong.

[Kill count: 3,000. Pool: 90,000 base EXP.]

Three thousand. The beasts had stopped coming through the Rift in waves. They trickled through in ones and twos now, as if whatever was directing them had realized the horde tactic wasn’t working and was recalculating.

Alvian killed the last batch. Twelve Voidcrawlers that stumbled through the Rift together, confused and disoriented. He walked through them like a man walking through tall grass. Swing. Swing. Swing. Twelve kills. Thirty-six pieces. Grey slurry.

[Kill count: 4,000. Pool: 120,000 base EXP.]

[Essence: 15 (dangerously low).]

[Note: The Host has killed more dimensional beasts in one hour than most Guild strike teams kill in a year.]

[The System is impressed. The System is also slightly terrified.]

[The System would like to remind the Host that a Rank 5 Calamity Boss is standing fifteen meters behind him.]

Alvian stopped. The courtyard was silent. The Rift was quiet. The only sound was the low hum of the Colossus’s dimensional aura and the drip of grey slurry running off the broken stone.

He turned around.

The Obsidian Colossus was looking at him. Six prismatic eyes, each the size of a car, focused with cold intelligence. The creature had watched him kill four thousand of its minions without moving. It had been waiting. Calculating.

Now it was ready.

The Colossus raised one massive fist. Compressed dimensional crystal the size of a cargo truck. The air around it distorted as dimensional energy bled from the creature’s body.

The ground shook.

BOOM.

The first step. The Colossus moved toward Alvian with the slow inevitability of a glacier.

[Gambler’s Delay pool: 120,000 base EXP.]

[Ready for release. Command: "Spin."]

Alvian looked at the pool. Then at the Colossus. Then at the pool again.

’One hundred twenty thousand base EXP. If I spin now and get a decent multiplier, I level up mid-fight. If I spin now and get garbage, I wasted four thousand kills.’

The Colossus took another step. BOOM. The courtyard cracked.

’But if I wait and the boss kills me, the pool dies with me.’

The Colossus raised its fist.

Alvian made his decision.

"Spin."

The cosmic roulette wheel ignited.

Three reels of nebulae and starlight spun into existence, hovering in the air above the courtyard. The sight was familiar to Alvian but new to everyone else watching. Helen Croft stared at it from behind her pillar. Darius Magnus gaped from the doorway. The surviving students who had crawled to windows and doorways to watch the battle saw a slot machine made of actual stars floating above their school.

The Fate’s Loaded Dice was already consumed. No probability modifiers. No safety nets. This was pure chance, unmodified and unfiltered.

Standard odds. Forty-five percent Common. Thirty-five percent Uncommon. Fifteen percent Rare. Four percent Epic. One percent God Roll.

The reels blurred. Bronze, Silver, Gold symbols streaking past in a smear of cosmic light.

The Colossus paused. Its six eyes tracked the wheel with the same cold intelligence it had shown while watching Alvian kill its horde. It could see the wheel. Or sense it. Or both.

First reel slowed. Gold.

The air pressure in the courtyard dropped. Dimensional energy from the Rift resonated with the wheel’s cosmic frequency. The slurry on the ground rippled.

Second reel slowed. Gold.

Alvian’s heart rate spiked. He calculated the probability in real time. Two Gold reels meant the result was locked to Epic tier or above. The chance of Epic was 4%. The chance of God Roll was 1%. Combined, that was 5% for either.

Five percent odds on 120,000 base EXP.

Third reel slowed.

Gold.

[DING!]

[EPIC ROLL! 2,500X MULTIPLIER!]

[Gambler’s Delay Pool: 120,000 base EXP × 2,500 = 300,000,000 EXP!]

The EXP hit Alvian like a freight train made of pure power.

His body locked up. Every cell in his Level 50 frame was flooded with dimensional energy simultaneously. Three hundred million EXP. His Flesh Limit at VIT 280 could safely absorb approximately 20,000 EXP. The incoming surge was 15,000 times that amount.

The Emergency Protocol activated instantly.

[Emergency Protocol engaged.]

[Absorbing excess EXP to Bank.]

[Intake rate: 2,000,000 EXP per second.]

[Estimated absorption time: 150 seconds.]

[Host body experiencing significant stress.]

His capillaries burst. Blood wept from his pores in thin red lines. His skin cracked like dry clay. His bones vibrated at frequencies that caused micro-fractures. Muscles tore and reknit in real time as the EXP forced cellular destruction and regeneration simultaneously.

He didn’t scream this time. He had been through the God Roll. He knew what to expect. He locked his jaw and took it.

The feedback loop kicked in. VIT increases expanded the Flesh Limit threshold, allowing more EXP to be safely absorbed, triggering more level-ups, providing more stat points for VIT allocation. The cascade was familiar now. Painful but manageable.

[Level up! Level 50 → 51. VIT +15. Threshold expanded.]

[Level up! Level 51 → 52.]

[Level up! Level 52 → 53.]

The alerts blurred together. His body was changing in real time. Muscles densified beyond what any training could produce. Bones hardened to the point where they rang like metal when struck. His skin developed a faint, iridescent sheen as the Clearwater resonance seeped into his cellular structure.

Something new happened.

His bones began producing trace amounts of hydroxyl radicals passively. The Clearwater resonance, pushed to its absolute limit by the massive Essence surge, had fundamentally altered his skeletal structure. His bones were now dissolution weapons by themselves. Every unarmed strike would carry corrosive damage without any active Skill use.

[New Passive Ability detected: BONE CORROSION.]

[Effect: Unarmed strikes deal additional dissolution damage equal to 5% of STR as hydroxyl radical damage.]

[The Host’s skeleton is now a weapon. The System finds this deeply concerning but undeniably cool.]

[Level up! Level 65 → 66.]

[Level up! Level 66 → 67.]

[Level up! Level 67 → 68.]

At exactly 150 seconds, it stopped.

[DING!]

[Epic Roll processing complete.]

[CRITICAL WARNING: World Will monitoring has escalated to CRITICAL.]

[One more Epic-or-above event will trigger Fate Enforcer deployment.]

[The System strongly recommends the Host avoid rolling anything above Rare for the foreseeable future.]

[The System also acknowledges this advice will almost certainly be ignored.]

Alvian opened his eyes.

The world looked different at Level 68. His INT 140 processed everything faster. He could see individual dust particles floating in the air. He could feel the dimensional energy leaking from the Rift as a physical sensation against his skin. His spatial awareness had expanded to cover the entire courtyard and half the Academy grounds.

His body felt like a fortress. VIT 650 gave him an HP pool of 1,300. His skin was tougher than most C-Rank armor. His bones were laced with dissolution energy. His STR 320 meant he could punch through stone walls without trying. His AGI 285 made him faster than anything his size had any right to be.

His Essence had regenerated to 280. The Abyssal Dissolution Domain could now be sustained at full radius for over forty seconds. At minimum radius, through contact, he could hold it for minutes.

He was Level 68 with the stats of a Level 80 combatant. And he was standing fifteen meters from a Rank 5 Calamity Boss.

The Colossus had been watching. Its six eyes had tracked the entire transformation with cold, crystalline intelligence. It had seen the star-wheel appear. It had seen the golden light. It had watched the boy who killed four thousand of its minions transform into something different right in front of it.

It didn’t care. It was a Rank 5 dimensional entity. It had one purpose.

The Colossus raised both fists above its head. The compressed dimensional crystal of its body crackled with enough energy to level a city block. The air around it distorted. The ground beneath it cracked.

BOOM.

The first step. Then the second. The Colossus charged with a speed that shouldn’t have been possible for something thirty meters tall.

Helen Croft screamed from behind her pillar. "RUN! YOU CAN’T FIGHT THAT THING!"

Alvian didn’t run.

He looked at the Colossus. He looked at his cracked sword. He looked at his hands, where the Bone Corrosion passive made his fingers leave faint acid traces in the air.

He dumped 50,000,000 EXP from his Bank into VIT and STR!

[EXP Allocation: 50,000,000 EXP.]

[VIT: 650 → 850 (+200 points). Cost: 20,000,000 EXP.]

[STR: 320 → 520 (+200 points). Cost: 30,000,000 EXP.]

[EXP Bank: 155,000,000 → 105,000,000.]

[HP: 1,300 → 1,700.]

The stat increase hit him like a second wind. His muscles bulged. His grip tightened until the cracked sword’s hilt groaned under the pressure. His skin toughened further. His bones became denser than any metal.

The Colossus’s fist came down.

A blow that could flatten a city block descended toward Alvian’s head. The wind pressure alone cracked the courtyard stones. The dimensional energy radiating from the fist disrupted the air molecules around it, creating a vacuum effect.

Alvian raised his hand.

He caught the fist.
