Chapter 57: The Courtyard Burns, Serah’s Last Stand

  • Next Chapter

He slammed his hands together. Magma poured from his palms, forming a rock wall across the corridor.

The Voidcrawlers hit the wall. Their phased mandibles passed through solid rock, but the heat disrupted their phasing. Three died on the wall, their shells cracking from the heat.

Students ran past Darius, crying with relief.

Darius did not feel like a hero. He felt like a terrified seventeen-year-old throwing everything at a endless enemy.

"This is real combat," he thought. "Not a tournament ring with rules."

He made another magma barrier as more Voidcrawlers attacked and more students fled.

His arrogance and noble pride were gone. Only survival remained.

Then the Rift pulsed.

The sound changed to a deep, heavy thudding, like massive footsteps. Something bigger was coming.

Thirty Rank 4 Void-Stalkers poured through the Rift together.

They were three meters tall, covered in phased armor, with eight bladed legs and spatial mandibles. They spread across the courtyard, surrounding the remaining instructors.

The instructor line collapsed.

Two instructors died in ten seconds. A phased mandible stabbed one through his armor. Another was torn apart by three Void-Stalkers before he could scream.

A Void-Stalker cut Helen Croft across the ribs. Blood soaked her uniform, but she kept fighting.

The Academy’s automatic defense system sent a city-wide distress signal.

[EMERGENCY BROADCAST: Ironclad Academy under Calamity-class attack.]

[Requesting immediate Guild and Royal Guard reinforcement.]

[Estimated time to defensive collapse: 45 minutes.]

The message repeated on every channel. Every Awakened in the capital with a student badge, a Guild comm, or a Royal Guard radio heard it.

In the Undercity, thirteen kilometers away, Alvian heard it.

He was already moving.

His high intelligence processed the broadcast instantly. He had watched the dimensional instability worsen for hours. He knew the Rift would open, and he knew what would come through. He hoped the Academy defenses would hold.

They did not.

His legs carried him through the maintenance tunnels on the thirteenth level faster than ever. His high agility turned the maze of broken walkways into a quick, straight path. He moved faster than the surface vehicles above.

Four minutes later, he popped out of a hatch near the Academy perimeter wall.

The wall was damaged and cracked. The magitech sensors were dead, destroyed by dimensional pressure. Guard posts were empty because guards had run or died.

He climbed the wall and looked down.

The courtyard was a disaster.

Hundreds of beasts filled the area. The remaining instructors were split into isolated groups, fighting alone. Helen Croft stood in the center, bleeding from her ribs, swinging her hammer furiously. The training dome had partly collapsed, and the main building was on fire.

His high intelligence calculated the battlefield in three seconds.

[DING!]

[Battlefield Assessment: Ironclad Academy Courtyard.]

[Enemy force: approximately 300 Rank 3 beasts, 50 Rank 4 beasts, 30 Rank 4 Void-Stalkers (new wave).]

[Defender force: 8 instructors active, 4 down, unknown number of students in tunnels.]

[Estimated time to total defensive collapse: 30 minutes.]

[The distress signal estimate was optimistic. Someone should fire whoever wrote that broadcast.]

Thirty minutes. Not forty-five.

He saw Helen take another hit. He saw her stagger, plant her hammer, keep swinging. He saw an instructor fall three meters from her, torn apart by two Void-Stalkers at once. He saw the Rift pulsing again, preparing to release another wave.

His hand tightened on his sword.

He had 95,000,000 EXP in the Bank. He had an S-Rank Domain that could dissolve everything in a fifty-meter radius. He had the knowledge that using it would escalate the World Will’s monitoring.

[World Will Status: ACTIVE MONITORING.]

[Warning: S-Rank Skill usage will escalate attention to CRITICAL.]

[Recommendation: Avoid S-Rank Skills unless absolutely necessary.]

[The System suggests the Host consider the consequences before acting.]

[The System also suggests the Host stop standing on walls and go help the bleeding woman with the hammer.]

He looked at Helen. She was bleeding out. She had minutes left.

He looked at the students fleeing through the tunnels. Some wouldn’t make it.

He looked at the Rift. It was still open. Still pouring beasts into the world.

Alvian stepped off the wall and dropped into the courtyard.

Deep in the evacuation tunnels beneath Ironclad Academy, Serah Garrick was running out of time.

The secondary Rift fracture had appeared forty minutes ago. A two-meter crack in the tunnel wall, leaking dimensional energy and Rank 2 creatures. She had sealed it with her SunFire Talent, condensing golden fire into a barrier that cauterized the crack’s edges and held the smaller beasts at bay.

The barrier was still holding.

Her Essence was not.

Serah could feel it draining. Holding the SunFire wall took almost all her energy. The golden light that had burned so bright when she first pressed her palms against the crack was dimmer now, flickering like a candle in the wind.

She couldn’t fight. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t do anything except stand here with her hands pressed against the golden wall and pour everything she had into keeping it alive.

If she dropped the barrier, the fracture would widen. Rank 2 creatures would flood the tunnel behind her. And behind her, hundreds of students were still evacuating through the main corridor. First-years. Twelve and thirteen-year-old kids who had Awakened months ago. Kids who couldn’t fight a Rank 2 Sludge Beetle, let alone a swarm pouring through an unsealed dimensional crack.

So Serah held the barrier.

Her arms shook. The golden light flickered. Sweat dripped from her chin onto the tunnel floor, hissing where it landed near the barrier’s edge.

"Come on," she whispered to herself. "Come on, come on, come on."

The barrier pulsed. Steadied. Held.

Behind her, footsteps echoed as the last group of students fled past. A girl, maybe twelve, stopped and looked back at Serah with wide, terrified eyes.

"Go," Serah said through gritted teeth. "Don’t stop. Don’t look back."

The girl ran.

Serah was alone.

The two A-Rank students assigned to guard this section of the tunnel stood at the corridor entrance, fifteen meters behind her. They were older students, Level 30 and 32, with combat Talents. They were there to protect her while she maintained the barrier.

They couldn’t protect her from what came next.

—

The sound came first.

A displacement of air. A vacuum hum that made the tunnel walls vibrate. Then a crack in the ceiling above and behind her! Reality split open, and something dropped through.

The Rank 5 Void-Stalker was three meters of nightmare.

Its carapace was crystallized dark energy, eight legs that blurred with spatial distortion. Its jaws could pass straight through solid objects. Because it lived between two dimensions at once, regular attacks could barely touch it.

Serah calmly analyzed the creature and knew the tunnel defenders stood no chance against it.

The two A-Rank students moved.

The first one, a Level 30 Lance Talent user, charged the Void-Stalker with his energy spear extended. He was brave. He was fast. He was dead in under a second.

The Void-Stalker’s mandible phased through his guard, through his armor, through his chest. It opened his abdomen from the inside. His insides became outsides. He hit the tunnel floor without a sound, eyes still open, seeing nothing.

The second student, a Level 32 Barrier Talent user, threw a containment field around the creature. The golden dome locked into place around the Void-Stalker.

The Void-Stalker walked through it.

The barrier didn’t break. The creature simply existed in a different dimensional space, and the barrier couldn’t touch what wasn’t fully here. One bladed leg caught the student across the neck.

Her head hit the tunnel floor three seconds before her body did.

Serah heard the screams. She heard the wet sounds of bodies hitting stone. She heard the vacuum hum growing closer, the clicking of eight legs carrying three meters of phased death toward her.

She didn’t turn around.

She couldn’t.

If she dropped the barrier, the fracture would open. The Rank 2 creatures would pour through. The students still evacuating in the main corridor would die.

Hundreds of them.

She had spent her whole life studying Essence circuitry. She had modified Alvian’s Talent pathways. She had analyzed Clearwater’s true nature. She planned to revolutionize the field of Talent research forever and prove she was valuable without her family’s SunFire legacy.

None of that mattered now.

What mattered was the barrier.

What mattered was the kids behind her who didn’t know her name and never would.

’So this is it,’ she thought. ’This is the choice.’

She could drop the barrier and fight. Her SunFire Talent was B-Rank. At full Essence, she might have lasted thirty seconds against the Void-Stalker. Maybe. Probably not. Phased creatures were nearly immune to energy attacks.

But she wasn’t at full Essence. She was at fifteen percent and dropping. She would last maybe three seconds in combat.

Three seconds of fighting. Then death. Then the barrier drops. Then the fracture opens. Then the kids die.

Or she could hold the barrier.

Hold the barrier and die.

But the kids live.

Serah Garrick turned her back to the Void-Stalker.

She planted her feet firmly on the tunnel floor. She pressed her palms harder against the golden wall. She poured everything she had left into the SunFire barrier.

The wall blazed brighter. The flickering stopped. The golden light went from weak orange to blazing gold, burning so hot that the stone around the barrier’s edges began to glow red.

’At least this way I go out doing something useful,’ she thought. ’Not research. Not politics. Not family legacy. Just... keeping people alive.’

The Void-Stalker’s shadow fell across her back.

She could feel it. The spatial distortion made the air pressure drop behind her. The vacuum hum was right there, close enough that she could hear the creature breathing, if it breathed at all. She could hear its legs clicking on the tunnel floor, eight pointed legs carrying three meters of phased death.

She could smell it. Ozone and something older, something from a dimension that didn’t have a name.

The mandible rose.

She felt it in the air. A shift in pressure. A pulling sensation against her spine, like the space behind her was bending around something that shouldn’t exist in any world.

Her hands trembled against the barrier. The golden light wavered but held. She pushed harder, burning Essence she didn’t have, pulling from reserves she had already drained twice over.

’Alvian,’ she thought. ’Wherever you are. I hope you’re doing something stupid and brilliant.’

The barrier held.

The mandible descended toward her spine.
